Maybe he could be an assistant coach?

HOLY SHIT.

PLEASE NO KIRK, YOU'RE IN CAREER-BEST ****ING FORM, DON'T DO ITTTT!

I was only today seriously thinking he could be playing when he was 40.

He isn't in career best form... He isn't playing as good as last year or the year before... But he is still playing very well...

I really really really don't want Kirk to retire.

Neither

I do want him to become a assistant coach with us when he retires but i don;t want him to retire for several years.

Odds are Longmire will coach North Melbourne next year so i would love to see Kirk become one of our assistant coaches and when Paul Roos eventially calls it quits Kirk could replace him as head coach.

Kirk would make a great head coach as i think he has a very good understanding of the game and as you all know he is a amazing leader.

Yes... I sincerely hope he decides to stay on for this reason and the leadership he provides, though if he does call it quits, there won't be a dry eye in the house in Round 22!

NO..

I'm seriously about to cry...

No......... Oh dear god no! No please no I'll cry....!
No. No no no no.. No.. Nooo.. No
Oh god I'm goin to cry..

No please god no.. NO NO no... NOOO NO.. his my HERO....

What will I do with my 31 guernsey... no kirk... NO MORE RETIREMENTS ... no please god

Read the full articule, he will play next year !

Yep - once you get past the first line, it reads as if he'll probably play on, though they do say that it's his call, which suggests he's still thinking about it.

Someone posted his stats a while back, his top three disposals games came this year, top tackles game came this year, etc. This IS his best year. Unless you can think of another year he got 41 disposals in a game?

i read some where that our sponsor Ford is looking into making Kirk a special wheel cheer/walking frame so he can play till hes 97

I honestly reckon he could play for another 5 years or so and get dangerously close to playing into his 40s. I think that'd only not happen if he was too selfless and wanted to step aside, not because of form.

Since when have stats been THE determining factor?

What is fact, is that we are averaging more possessions as a team than in recent years. We have passed 400 on a couple of occations... something we had never done before.

It is therefore obvious that players would get more possessions.

He is a stat machine.

Yep, especially with the new handballing game strategy that is sweeping the league that was started by Geelong. I hate seeing teams handball more than kick. Saturday's game was a nice change with both team kicking more than handballing.

The disposals per game stat in particular has nowhere near as much relevance today as it used to, similar to most stats. The leading markers used to be the key forwards but now you regularly see defenders and midfielders rack up marks due to the cheap kicks backwards etc.

I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago that he may retire. My reason was so that he could take on an assitant coaching role should a few places be vacated by Longmire, Blakey & Allison. The other reason is because he basically plays the game hard & plays a very physical role, like Paul Kelly did, but Kirk's game relies on many stoppages of which ends up on the bottom of the pack more often then not.

This must be making it hard to get himself right, week after week. Some of our results have shown that when Kirk's done too much in a game his following one is not his best. After the Essendon game, we played Carlton & although he was pretty good in the first half, we ran out of puff in the last half..............the last Q we got smashed in the middle.

I'll be wrapt if he played another year but I'd be devistated if he struggled through games next year due to wear & tear.

Just my thoughts!!
Cheers!

not much in the story, i think a lot of you are reading too much into the article

as much as i can gather, negotiations are continuing, and kirk is considering his options.... which is an innate part of contract negotiations

i remain 99.9% confident kirk will continue for atleast another year

Kirk will be playing his 173rd consecutive gave this Sunday, hasnt missed since round 15 2002, thats a huge effort..Go Kirky

I hope he doesn't retire as well cause he is a great player but if he does, it won't be the end of the world. We got through Paul Kelly retiring which was hard but we had success soon after. Hopefully the same happens when Kirky decides to call it quits.

I tend to agree...I felt kirk has been struggling over the last 4 games...so I looked over his stats for the season and saw that he's currently top 4 for the swans...behind ROK, jude bolton and goodes....so I thought my perception that he'd been struggling may be flawed...but on closer inspection he has slowed down significantly in the last 4 games...

average rating for 2009 = 90.2
last 4 games = 58 against st kilda, 80 against the demons, 64 against carlton & 60 against essendon...that's an average of 65.4 in the last 4 games...that's a significant drop

now I know stats aren't the be all or end all...but i turned to stats to see whether they told a story...it can't be due to facing tough competition...apart from st kilda, none of our recent opponents are really dominating...and I don't know if kirk is just slowing down towards the end of the season due to fatigue or what have you...but it seems as though he's unlikely to have the same impact in 2010...and I'd be surprised if he didn't decline dramatically in 2011

another look at stats over the last couple of seasons...

2009: average = 90.2 ...last 4 games = 65.4
2008: average = 90.3 ...last 8 games = 81
2007: average = 90.9 ...last 8 games = 83.9

so while he's been consistent over the last 3 seasons...he has tended to slow down towards the end of the season...and unless he has a few huge performances by the end of the year we're likely to see his worst finish to a season in some time...which to me isn't very encouraging for kirk playing on more than next year....i hope kirky proves me wrong here...
