A few numbers about Essendon that might interest people:
(a) Essendon's leading goalscorers in their 19 games have been in order - 4 goalscorers 2 goals, Jetta 4 and Crameri 3, Crameri 4, Crameri 5 and Davey 3, Davey 3, Crameri 4 and Jetta and Davey 3 each, Davey 3 and Crameri 3, Ryder 4 and Monfries and Stanton 3 each, Davey and Crameri and Bell Chambers 3 each, 1 goalscorer 2 goals,Davey 3, Hurley 6, Hurley 5 and Watson and Reimers 3 each, 2 goalscorers 2 each, Jetta 6 and Gumbleton 3, Bell Chambers 3, Gumbleton 4 and Winderlich 4 - all wins are in bold - when they win their key forwards score and they don't get that many 3 goal hauls from their midfield. When Crameri scored 3 goals this year they won;
(b) The leading goalscorers against Essendon have been, in order - Harvey 3, Schulz 4 and Westhoff 3, 3 goalscorers 2 goals, Betts 4, Swan and Cloke 3 each, 3 goalscorers 2 each, 1 goalscorer 2 goals, Edwards and Cotchin 3 each, Cameron 3, 1 goalscorer 2 goals, Jetta 3,Mayne 4 and Pavlich 3, Minson 3, Milne 5 and Riewoldt 4, Ebert and Westhoff 3 each, Hawkins 5 and Smeldts 3,Hodge 5, Suckling 4, Gunston 3 and Roughhead 3 and Walker 4 and Dangerfield 3 - all wins are in bold - their defence has been tight but can be broken often by smaller forwards working well with a key forward;
(c) In 17 of their 19 games they have had 8 or more goalscorers and of their losses only one has come when they had 9 or more goalscorers - cut down on the Essendon complementary goalscorers and you go a long way to winning;
(d)They have allowed 9 or more goalscorers to oppositions 9 times and lost 5 times - make sure the NM goalspread is wide. They have kicked over 100 or more points 12 times but only twice in the last 5 weeks and allowed 100 points 6 times but have done so 4 of the last 5 weeks resulting on 4 losses to them;
(e) Their first quarters are either feast or famine scoring 4 or more goals 8 times and 1 or less 5 times and have let opposition sides score 4 or more goals 12 times in the first quarter and held them to one or less 4 times;
(f) Their second quarters are very good scoring 4 or more goals 11 times and allowing oppositions to do so only 6 times while they have scored 4 or more 9 times in the third quarter ( but only twice in the last 9 weeks) and allowed oppositions to do so 8 times ( but 5 times in the last 7 games) and in the fourth quarter they have done so 8 times ( but only 1 time in the last 5 weeks) and their opposition has done so 7 times in the last quarter ( but 3 times in the last 5 weeks) - they have been a good first half side;
(g)They can come from behind ( winning after being behind at the end of 7 quarters ) but don't usually cough up leads( only 4 times have they been beaten after leading at the end of a quarter);
(h) Their key goalscorers have been - Crameri 28 goals (scoring in 10 separate games), Davey 26 ( scored in 13 games), Jetta 21 (10 games), Hurley 20 (9 games), Melksham 13 (10), Watson 17 (11), Ryder 15 (8 ), Monfries 14 (9), Stanton 12 (7),Gumbleton 10(4), Bell Chambers 10 (5), Delolio 10(6) and Hille 9 (6) - lots of goals from different sources but Crameri and Davey have been the key; and
(i) At half time they have scored 8 or more goals on 8 occasions (but only 2 times in the last 5 games) but allowed oppositions to score 8 or more goals to half time 6 times (but have done so on 4 of the last 5 weeks).
So the keys for me:
1 - Jam up their key forwards;
2 - Do NOT allow their complementary forwards or midfielders to score - some good defensive work is required;
3 - Go hard the first quarter and expect the rebound in the second quarter - be prepared to play a man back to stop their momentum if necessary;
4- Spread the scoring around so Petrie, Tarrant, Hansen get the ball if free and have blokes like Harvey, Harper etc to add those extra goals necessary in a shootout. Also get some goals out of Wells etc.
Remember that Harvey has scored 3 or more goals only 3 times this year. He is due.
NM can win this.
