We need someone who can play (and make a big impact) NOW. We have enough young developing tall forwards.

Don't get me wrong, Fergus Watts would be a good get at the right price, but I would rather "at all costs" get someone like Polak or Whitnall.

Pfft Polak or Whitnall. Overpriced both of them, i would much rather Watts a 10 year player with tons of potential.

I'd prefer Whitnall, Fev or Polak personally.

With Watts you don't know what you are getting. We have youngsters like that in Smith, Dunn and Newton.

What we need is for someone to make a big impact in 2006. That's where a Polak, Whitnall or even Fev comes into play.

Midfield is our problem area. Not KPP.
The reason our defense comes under fire at times is NOT because we don't have good enough players to fill CHB and FB. It is caused by two problems outside the backline:

-Daniher not letting the backline settle. Throughout this year our tall defenders have been constantly swapped around, injured and dropped to the VFL. IMO our three tall defenders should be: Rivers, Carroll and Fergy. Rivers and Fergy should be in the weight room all summer to get some more strength as they have every other attribute to be excellent defenders. I rate Carroll ahead of Nicho as well. And I would line up on opposition forwardlines like this:

For example say we play Geelong next year.
Carroll-Kingsley
Fergy-Ottens
Rivers-Playfair

Another example, say we play the Dons.
Carroll-Lloyd
Fergy-Laycock/Hille
Rivers-Lucas

So Carroll would be taking the usual FF, Rivers takes the CHF and Fergy takes the 3rd tall (Usually a resting ruckman).

-The other reason is we aren't great getting plenty of clearances against top midfields (Hence the need for a Kerr type). When this happens (See Brisbane, Saints x2 and Hawthorn games this year) our defense is under enormous pressure and the blame automatically goes to our defense. We use the ball better than most sides, but we must get better at clearances. Beamer, Brock and Col will fill this for the next 10 years but are still a year or two off.
For example against Brisbane we got smashed in the middle, yet Rivers held Brown to one goal (I know Bradshaw kicked 9 on Nicho but that was a complete mismatch as Bradshaw is far too quick for Nicho).

If we could grab a good KP forward to have when Neitz leaves I may be persuaded to the idea (Perhaps Fev, but he could kick 100+ or be awful) but I think the midfield needs to be addressed first. Plus if Neita gets fit we could squeeze maybe another year or two out of him. Just having him there helps us enormously.

Mark my words, if we can at least break even or come close to the top midfields at clearances we will be top 4. We have the skill, we just need a bit more grunt.

Yes, midfield does need some added grunt.

Bartel is exactly what we need in the middle.

Unfortunately I seriously doubt we will be able to satisfy Geelong's need so we most likely wont get him.

Our forwardline also desperately needs another target.

Neitz struggled with injuries, Miller played too far up the ground and Yze went missing at times.

Holland is a workhorse but he is too easily exploited by rebounding defenders.

If we were to get someone like Polak or Whitnall we'd be in a much better position.

I'm really warming to the idea of Polak as he would be able to rotate with Miller either forward or back.

Versatility like this would help us tremendously in 2006 and beyond.

For a start Polak is just as unproven as Watts, but Polak is a WA boy, and hasn't played to his potential either. I would much rather Watts a VIC boy who is 197cm and can also take a grab and kick goals.

Whitnall i wouldn't mind but the asking price is going to be very high. I would much rather target Watts who would be fairly cheapl and go after a midfeilder like davey magic suggested which i have been pushing all along.

None will play AFL in 2006. Smith is lucky to play more then 4 games a yr.

Sounds great but how? What will satisfy Freo's needs?

Armstrong & our first pick? Do we wanna do that?

Wouldn't mind Watts at all, although if we have the chance to take a Whitnall, then I say we go for that.

Maybe a straight swap, Smith for Watts?

Lukewarm to Polak, just doesn't seem to do enough even though I'd still love him at the club. He's another that I'd take, but only at the right price.

If we could somehow suck Adelaide into taking Smith for Fergus, I say go for it!

BTW heard today that if the Blues don't match Whitnall's asking price, his preferance is to come to Melbourne.

Sauce of that last part. Not saying you are wrong, just don't want to hear you got it off a mate who's dad knows a guy who knows another guy who delivers water to the Carlton Footy Club.

An MFC official!

But it doesn't mean a whole lot anyway. We'd still need to offer him enough money on top of agreeing to a trade with Carlton.

But it's a start.

i think fergus watts would be just the thing we need. i just cant believe he was right under our noses at sandringham and we didnt take him despite the fact we knew we needed big boys. bate newton and dunn are all over 190 i grant you that. but they arent gonna be bash and crash. also did anybody hear about melbourne drafting robert warnock brother of matthew in the draft?? left footer. 201 centimetres or something and 77KILOS!!! scary. how is matthew warnock going. when i watched the vfl grand final he appeared to play well dashing out of defence, maybe another wheatly for us. back to watts. it said at the end of that article that his dad is at st kilda. they would be loooking like snaring him as a replacement for fraser. even though they have kosh*tski and rievoldt. the last thing we need st kilda to have is fergus watts.

Definately a start - it will be interesting if and when he walks out, as his contract is up so he could leave for nothing, which means we might not have to up the ante on what we offer as much. Although in doing that we risk losing him to the pre-season draft.

I'm also interested in whether or not we chase a guy like Salopek, as he'd be handy in our midfield.

If you don't think Dunn will be a bash and crash forward, then you are an idiot.

A kid from up here in brissy named michael west would be a great prospect in this years draft. Kicked 13 goals in a match this year playing for QLD.

We could snag him at around 30 with our second pick.
