Listened in to harf time today for a bit while in the car. Shifter Sheahan was on talking about the draft combine for internationals and mentioned the young kiwi.

Mentioned that he is a key position player who will be a "free kick" for hawthorn when they rookie list, or perhaps even put him straight on the primary list at the end of next year.

Well done to our recruiting department on their foresight.

On Josh Caddy:
I like the way Shane savage goes about it, but I think he lacks the ball skills to be elite. Caddy could have. Should we/could we straight swap?

Free kick?
The money & man hrs spent identifying him, flying him to and from new Zealand, getting him to box hill or hawthorn training
That's no free kick

It wasn't as though the club went "oh, here's a kid, let's get him"
Those costs are not within the salary cap. The NZ experiment will reap benefits, Kurt could have been a top 20 draft pick that we get for free, how much is that worth in $$$$?

Do you honestly believe that without hawthorns intervention, that he would have been even identified as a potential draftee?

He isn't coming from Gaelic, it's not a case of just seeing a vid

Given the cost of accommodation, insurance, flights, etc, I wouldn't be surprised if hawthorn spent 25k on him, for a player with no garuntee of coming to your club, that's a lot of quid

You've completely missed the context it was used in. What the club has spent is irrelevant. Him being a free kick is simply referring to the fact we can draft someone, who has the quality and talent of a first rounder, straight to our list. Don't have to go through the draft, don't have to trade picks, no one can bid on him- he is ours. He's a free kick because he exists outside of the normal rigours of the system, and the fact he is a scholarship player that is so highly touted given the hit and miss nature of new people to the code makes it even more sweeter. It's a metaphor.

MM if it doesn't come out of the cap then it didn't happen.

Think ur under selling what Shifter said about Kurt ... :)

Think you're right.

I wouldn't be surprised either if it took more than savage to get caddy. If I think caddy can be elite and savage can't be, I hardly think it is a fair swap - I'm always looking for hawks to win. If young wants to go, him and sac for caddy and a third rounder? Two gf players for a talented kid and an unknown kid.

I'm not sure what your point is MM, however, if we identify talent from o/s, we enough cash in the bank to spend on them....develop them....school them....train them, all those costs are 'development' which like the draft is a risk, but based on due diligence performed by the club. These costs are outside the cap.

So in 3 years, when Kurt is dominating the AFL and we get him as a rookie without having to give up a pick, then question the $25k you mention......

BTW, Punky is a NSW Scholarship rookie, we spent alot of time and cash educating him, do you want to question the expenditure there?

I liked the part where Savage won't be elite, but Caddy could be...so let's do a straight swap with GC.

but it's not just what we think and gc think caddy is worth. he wants to go, so gc will take best offer. savage offers a lot that they could use and might be best offer. they might think I'm wrong and savage can be elite. it's happened before (me being wrong)

This post of Roddy's about Kurt is copied from the trade thread:

Yes? :)

My take on Kurt has been that he plays exceptionally well behind the ball and on the ball. For a big guy he is good below his knees- i remember the first game i saw him in, playing for South Pacific last year, this was a feature of his game. He could run, pick the ball up off the deck, and negotiate traffic. Had a great knack of being able to release a handball. I could really imagine him playing as a ruck/rover, and i guess some of the natural abilities he brings to the game are as a result of his playing other sports in NZ, like Rugby Union and Basketball. He can mark, but i wouldn't say id had seen enough instances to suggest he was a great contested mark- but he can mark. Is a tough nut as well.

He has tended to have a bit of a robotic approach to kicking (guys like Echols could comment on this too), but i would say this is improving, and it certainly hasn't stopped him from kicking goals. I also think that as a forward, he doesn't read the ball the as well when it's coming towards him. I'm not saying he'll never have this ability, or that he's bad- just that, from what i have seen, he's not quite as strong in this area.

Has been groomed as a defender somewhat this year, which is great for his understanding of the game and for us positionally- however, i still think that his speed, height, leap, and ability to work well at ground level, lend him to being able to play on the ball as well. See what happens.

Punky was rookie draft GH, not NSW scholarship.

Savage is not going anywhere.

I know that Kurt is eligible to be picked up next year, and given he is at the Combine he's attracting a lot of attention here. However, I'm curious as to whether Rhys Panui-Leth has shown anything, as he's an International Scholarship holder that we can apparently get this year... I haven't heard a single thing, so I take it that's not a great sign?

How much money gets spent on draft picks with no guarantee they'll live up to their potential? I'm pretty sure Thorp would of cost us a hell of a lot more then 25K in his 3 years at the club.

It's all part and parcel of running a football club thesedays.

Interested if anyone knows anything about big Shem as well...
I was told he is physically very gifted, not sure about playing footy though.
