Player Watch Lachie Schultz

Perhaps you should watch Ginnis game on fri. He was woeful. He relies on hawks uncontested game to get touches. A slow small forward with no defensive bone is not what we lack

Maybe but at the end of the day you can’t change my mind on the fact that he is still not worth 1st round pick. I hope he proves me wrong though

He gone from a momentum maker to momentum breaker. He won 2 Glendining medals in the derby by being a wrecking ball type who took nice marks and kicked goals, to a hesitant momentum breaker. Not sure what's going on in his head.

He's a square peg we're trying to fit in a round hole. His best footy is in an Elliott style role. He played it well when Elliott was out last year, but we're using him as a linking half forward and he doesn't have the skillset for it. We clearly thought he was more versatile than he is when we recruited him and currently don't have a role that suits him.

We paid pick 10 and a second-rounder for a guy we don't have a role for?
FMD, do something then - drop Billy and play Schultz
Use him as a forward pocket that takes away their best small defender - anything, something.

We have to make this work - what is everyone's best role, work it out, then select the side to maximise our results regardless of player/s

Price paid is what it is. There will continue to be heaps of clubs who use pick 10 or less for blokes who don't add much to the team. He's a serviceable battler in the role we use him in. We overrated what he could do - that's just how it goes sometimes.

Look I know fall but 90% of this thread is about the trade, not Schulz. I feel like shouting sometimes WE OVERPAID!! Its not like that is a new thing. I can remember a heap of woeful trades in my lifetime and I forget my own name most days. Didn't we pay an arm and a leg for that drug addicted/gambling/shady character a few years back? That had alarm bells and sirens and lights and god knows what else and yet we still let it happen.

We overpaid for Schultz. Argument over. Does he deserve a place in our team every week since he came to the club. Yes. Far be it for me to criticise anyone, I am an acknowledged idiot and arseh*le. But seriously can we move beyond this circular conversation and actually engage in some decent analysis.

Let me put a bit more context into it. He was playing as a link up half forward. He took 6 marks and had 10 disposals, 6 marks is very good for that role. He is down on confidence and is taking a while to get back to his best. He not our biggest issue atm

Thanks manicpie, you make a good wingman or is it the other way around.

I actually think that kinda describes the majority of his time at the pies. I think that is what we can expect. We might get a standout game or two, we might even get lucky with a standout season. Bottom line the role he was perfect for in our team kinda passed by in 2024. The bigger problem is we don't seem to have a game plan that wins with our current personal.

A rough comparison, works for my feeble mind. By the end of 2010 we had a game plan that worked and a bunch of players peaking (fitness, age, experience, health) simultaneously. We started that way in 2011 but as year progressed some of that died off and, crucially, our game plan began to falter. 2012 game plan was out the door. I see some similarities to 2022/3/4. I am not trying to make some massive statement here, just saying the game changes quickly and right now we have a heap of decent players that don't have a game plan that brings a synergy together.

I'm expecting an improvement but I don't think he was any worse than most of our players yesterday. He made a couple of howlers but 6 marks for a link up/high half forward is pretty much playing that role well. I just want the freo version but it's been slow coming

6 marks is good. But it's what happens next. It's either:

A rushed kick inside F50 that advantages the opposition or

He holds onto it too long and allows the defenders to get numbers back and then he kicks it to the pockets for na easy spoil OOB.

The bolded was pretty clearly strategy. It's what worked for us at the back end of last year, enabled us to lock it in and not get smashed in transition. Need Cox back for it to be more effective though.

The errors in quick transition however are a big issue.

We do, but even with Cox it wouldn’t have been effective against Taylor.

Yep. I alluded to that. It's a lack of confidence that we need him to shake and shake it quickly. When you have McCreery, WHE and shoota fumbling often, it costs us dearly

Unfortunately the pies were scammed by this C grade player… even those who defended him last year have come to realise that a ‘dud’ cannot change his spots.. McRae has a massive job in trying to improve the forwards around him.

I think you mean a leopard can't change it's spots. A dud can't change it's spots unless it's a ranga with lots of freakles

In terms of DE%… at 40% Schulz underperformed yesterday 🤷

But like I said last year… 25 goals and 80 tackles in the forward half is about par for Schulz - this takes into account a lot of his role is done without ball in hand

He roughly did those stats last year… and injury permitting… will do that this year

I think the word you are after his leopard

Was thinking the same. Ginni was one of my faves, but his game on Friday in a win was very poor.
And he pretty much got his medal under false pretenses - like when he ignored Sidey's advice and did the around the corner kick and missed.

For what we gave up to get him over , very underwhelming, it’s like he is in 2 minds to what option to take when he has possession, is it a confidence thing , weight of expectations , maybe a combination of both ! whatever it is , he’s gotta clear his head and man the heck up .

Or handballs to himself when he had 2 teammates free 5 metres away. got caught , turnover , goal GWS. Under 15 standard nous , judgement and mindset , he can play at a decent standard , no doubt , think a spell in the 2’s is the way to go , get him to refresh , reset , recalibrate.
