was interviewed on 3aw earlier tonight. said the following
-getting thompson would allow us to play brown at center half back, where he plays his best footy. wont need to use him as a spare parts man anymore.
-drew will continue to play center half foward
-thompson had shown genuine interest when north approached him 3-4 weeks ago, more so when dean and others spent the day with him on friday.
-needed to recruit an older guy(25-28) as we have a great bunch of youngsters, enough older guys but needed to get some middle age guys to the club.
-confident thompson will play 100 odd games of quality footy for the club
-greg miller never to be trusted (in regard to north being frontrunners for ottens), my perception is that north were targeting thomo all along, made one play for ottens, but focusing on getting nathan across.

incidently the more i think about this trade the more i like it. no garuntee with draft picks. good players can come from anywhere in the draft, same with ******** ones. at least we have used our available resources to net a quality player that can not only be used to adress some of our deficienies but also a guy that has great character and could lift the games of others on our list. glad that we didn't have to give up a player, and that team spirit will remain in tact.

Thanks for that
i also heard the interview and had the same impresion that Tomo was the number 1 target. A couple of other things i heard.
- Tomo will be renting a place in Melbourne and not comuting to the country as he did this season.
- That Drew may play some games at CHB as he did this year.
- That some of the youngsters that have been drafted by the club are getting attention from other clubs re trades however were not negotiable, as he said that he is bringing a talented group though together and that they have a great deal of improvement in them as most were drafted at a bottom age.
- No need for Leigh Brown to play in ruck any more and would settle him down in the backline.
- Deano has spent alot of time over the past three days with Tomo, and Tomo believes a change of team will prolong his footy life.
-

Thanks for that, It looks like Ottens may have been the decoy trade to throw other clubs off Thompson, we spoke to him friday but all the press was about Ottens, looks like we may have learnt some hard lessons in the trade game.
What I am saying is that it was designed to keep Sheedy out of the picture and it has.

Now stick to it Dean! Don't fall into the trap of plugging holes. It has become a trend across the league of multi positioning players. It doesn't work for all, perhaps most players.

Thanks for sharing BL.

so many games we have either lost because our pinch hitting ruckman tire or our forward line runs thin with options, thompson is a great option for forward of the centre rucking, now brown across half back can do behind centre with the BIG plus hale can develop at AFL level playing a kick behind play and floating around as almost a loose ruckman. This i believe is the thinking behind laidleys plan. I have a feeling we are not done this week just yet, morrison maybe i don't know..... all looks much better for next year, instead of missing the finals by a small margin, maybe we have enough with tommo and improvement of other guys to make it.
Also at a sportsmans night in town the other night with dermie , sheeds and oscar swarve i bought a signed roos jumper with 29 signatures on it for 270, the steal of the night i thought, what do these things usually go for???

I heard Dean being interviewed this morning on SEN. He said that North had no chance of getting Ottens and he was almost certain to end up at Geelong.

Dean was asked what young players he thought were ready to play next year and he replied Callum Urch, Blake Grima and David Trotter. He said that Shore and Perry were progressing nicely but may take a little longer as they were drafted very young. He also said that he was excited by Hamish McIntosh who was very close to senior selection before he got injured.

Dean was asked if there was any truth to the rumour that Carlton and Essendon were throwing big money at Sinclair and his response was "Jess won't be going anywhere".

Bugger.

Interesting that in one breath he expects 2 HB to play next year while saying another is going to stay. Not mention the likes of Makepeace as well.

Jess Siclair is capable of playing on a wing, and i'm sure Trotter and Urch will be eased through interchange anyway. Plus including back pockets as you did (Makepeace) there are four positions anyway.

Would like to see Jess and Skull rotate with eachother through a wing and a back flank/pocket. Both are loose, but creative going forward

Exactly, having them both in the backline is too much for Archer to look out for, but with just the one creative backman and one on the wing, much more run while still being accountable.

Of course, fans of other clubs keep on telling us that we don't have any decent kids coming through. :p

:)

But even then you can see the Chinks in the Armour of that perception already

Except for Wells ... oh and Harris ... and say - are you willing to trade Petrie for our 2nd round pick ? Maybe thow in Jones as well and it can be a 1st rounder ... oh and I heard from my mate down the pub that Trotter isn't happy because he secretly always went for Collingwood when he was a kid - can we swap him for O'Bree ?

:) is your mate named Craig Hutchison ?

And the fact remains.... Stevo, Arch and Corza WERE Magpie supporters but I'm sure they don't give a toss about them anymore. Fact # 2... Trotter is and always has been a North supporter.... seems to me Ausgard that your buddy is a closet North supporter and torturing himself following the b/w filth is a illness that he will forever deny.
