Lake Oval redevelopment

I just got a flyer in my mailbox about the redevelopment of the Lake Oval. Firstly the old grandstand, circa 1926, will be restored and become the home of the VIS. It would be great if they could find some space for the Swan's Melbourne office, it seems the natural place for it.
There will be an international standard athletics track and what looks like a new grandstand on the Northern side.
The soccer club that plays there now will get improved facilities. In the flyer they are referred to as the South Melbourne football club, which just about made me chuck my weeties. I guess they must be referring to the 'South Melbourne Flare Throwing Window Smashing Run From A Fair Fight Hellas Soccer Club'

Its a great venue, but the square oval is an eyesore to me, the pic 3rd from the top under the current establishment the back of the stand, still shows the old faded red doors were every player and member entered(or kids snuck in), open to the public on training nights etc, that door has so many great memories to me and I assume alot of South people to this day.

Pretty amazing that they (the state government at the time) couldnt improve it when the Swans were still playing there. It was pretty run down then. Still a great atmosphere and compared to some of the other grounds, like Moorabbin, at least there was plenty of car parking at the Lake Oval.

I went down there once and told them they don't own the name, but they do after plenty of phone calls i found out it was not the fault of the SSFC but the F@@@ing AFL. So the Greeks own our name, they even threatened to sue us for having SMFC on the back of the jumper. This mob are a disgrace, they used to just go and train on other clubs grounds without permission (rats). This is one of the reasons i hate wogball in Australia.

How the f**k does any body else but us own the name South Melbourne Football Club? These are the same f**kwits who wanted to charge us $10,000 to have our first grand final celebration in 72 years at our spiritual home. At least with this development it will be more of an athletics stadium than a soccer ground. School kids from all over the state will come to compete here, that is a far better legacy than the filth that dominate it now. George Donikian was the president when they tried to extort us in 05, he was patronizing to our club, "oh yeah, we love the Swans, the blood's, yes of course we love them, oh yes we'd love them to come to our pitch (sic) however we have to make a profit......" SCUM.

Yep, the state government are spending 50 million bucks fixing the joint up, this will free up the Lexus Centre and the Olympic precinct for Collingwood.
Geez about 1 million would have gotten us out of the shit.....bastards.

they should make the ground round again, and bring back the Swans, let Sydney have West Sydney to call their own, sorry good Sydney folk but in all honesty its what I wish for, its not gonna happen of course but dont hold it against me for feelin like that..

Mate can you imagine? TBH I spent many years in Sydney and they are truly Sydney's team now but you cant help but dream. Especially when youv'e had a few.............hic.

On topic: That 'South Melbourne football club' is one of the reasons I will NEVER follow club soccer in this country. Never. What they did to the swans after we won the Grand Final (Disallowed us to celebrate at Lakeside Oval) was absolutely disgraceful behaviour, IMO. One of the many reasons why I hate the attitude of the so-called 'true' supporters of soccer and will never attend a 'Melbourne Victory' game. That's how annoyed I am every time I go past Lakeside and see those horrible blue colours.
