I reckon, get an Asus UL30VT. 10 hours battery life, 2.5cm thick, and about 1.7kg. The UL30VT-A1 comes with 2 year warranty and also a larger battery. Switchable graphics between the dedicated graphics card, and the internal, so as to save on battery, but have the option of a more powerful graphics card when needed. Can get it here for about $1300 (but heaps of confusion about capacity of battery), or shipped from the US for under $1000 (no confusion, just need the Asus UL30VT-A1).

Only downside is the lack of optical drive, but depends how much you use it, and can always pick up external to use.

If it's too small, and you need the optical drive, the Asus UL80VT is always an option, same switchable graphics, and impressive battery life. Bit bigger and heavier as expected, with the 14" screen as opposed to 13"

I'l probably end up getting the UL30VT laptop, or the new Touchsmart tm2, as it's a tablet, and would allow me to take notes by writing on screen.

I bought the Dell XPS M1330 for just under $1500 about 12 months ago, and it has served me extremely well during my first year at university. I'm not a heavy gamer or anything, really just needed it for uni work and lectures, and then internet and music/movies in my leisure time, but it has been fantastic. Great combination of portability and utility - I really didn't want some 15-17" bohemoth to lug around uni

Compaq Presario C700. Got it for my birthday in my first year, now heading into my third. Has some issues with RAM and others that I suspect are Vista related (****ing Vista) but it gets the job done.

Had a great BenQ 15 inch notebook. Relatively cheap but still capable of gaming.

Now have a new notebook Alienware m15x.

Absolute beast and if you can afford it can be beefed up even more.

Even the basic package is a very good gaming machine as well as being useful for running graphics intensive software.

The catch though is battery life so I would definitely recommend getting the 9 cell battery.

I'm thinking of getting this. I'm looking at every part at it's default setting except for the battery.

I really only want to play source type games like Left 4 Dead 2 (ok so I won't due to the censorship), TF2, Half Life 2 etc, would this be overkill? I sort of want this reasonably future proofed but I must say I'm not a huge PC gamer, if there's a PC exclusive game that's worth getting I'll get it (or if like most source games the PC versions are better).

What's the battery life like if you only used it to say surf the web?

EDIT: bah thought this was the computers/tech board!!!

New Macbook 13 inch on the education deal. Got a free printer and ipod. Pretty happy with the switch. Now I just have to find a bag to carry it around campus with...

More info?

If you're a student and you get a macbook from an Apple Store before a certain date, and in the same purchase you buy an ipod and a HP printer you can get a rebate for up to approx $260 for the ipod and approx $130 for the printer. So if you buy the HP photosmart and the 8gig ipod touch you get both of them for free essentially (you can get more expensive ones but you'll pay the difference). Make sure you take your student card though, also get a student discount.

See more about it here - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/21001
