Larry Brown- Your Thoughts

What do you think about Larry Brown as a coach? I seem to think he is loved by the media despite never winning a title.

He has coached 8 teams (san antonio twice) and has a regular season record of 884 won ,688 lost .562 %

his post season averages are 69 won, 72 lost, .489%

He has 3 contending teams in this career (spurs,indiana and the 76'ers) but hasn't been able to take them to the top. Facinates me when ever his team starts going downhill he leaves and the media always say there was a communication problem with his players. It just intrigues me how he never has any pressure on him and other coaches like river's and cartwright are strutinised.

I think he is a good coach, but if he coached my team i would hibernate for 3-4 seasons knowing that my team would be treading water for that time.I think Detroit made a big mistake getting rid of Carlisle thinking they were upgrading with Brown.Brown has never been known to use rookies and this will stunt Darko's development.

The reason Carlisle was dispatched was because he wouldn't play the rookies. Memo Okur and Tayshaun Prince were not even practicing with the squad last season because Carlisle didn't want them to. Now Prince is starting and putting up great numbers and Okur is seen as an up-and-coming talent. Both are getting their minutes under Brown. Also, one of the reasons Brown was brought in was because he is good with teaching rookies, so they've put him to task to teach Darko how the system works, how to play in the post and how to defend.

As for whether he can take the Pistons to the promised land, I don't know. I hope so, but it might take a few years.

prince is getting some playing time and is doing ok this season(remember it was Carlisle who gave him a chance in the play-offs last year and he made his mark)

Darko is averaging a whopping 2.8 minutes a game this year.he has played 11 minutes in 4 games.that is pretty low for a 2nd draft pick.I know he is a "project" but **** me how much can you learn in practise? at least give him 10-15 minutes a game so you can see if he is improving.

I find it hard to believe that Prince and Okur were not even practising with the squad last year.

prepare for a uneventful 3-4 years.detroit will make the play-offs,maybe the eastern conference finals and then they will die in the a.rse because of Larry Browns uninspired, methodical coaching methods.

Practicing against some of the best players in the world, plenty you'd think. Theres no way he deserves more time then he is getting when there are numerous other options that are ready to contribute right now, as the Pistons are a contender, not just a team on the rise.

Practicing will help i agree, but only to a certain level. the best way to learn is to get some court-time against different opponents,different styles of play,defences,tactics etc,etc.

At least let the the kid make a few rookie mistakes,dirk was horrendus in his first year but they still gave him 20 minutes a game,I know he is playing for a contender for the east but he must have some talent of playing or he wouldn't be the number 2 pick.time will tell i guess but Brown has always favoured veterans.

Definetly has some talent, but was drafted so high because of his potential. Court time may help to some degree, but the Pistons would be stupid to overplay a guy whose simply not ready to compete when they're pushing for a spot in the NBA finals. Dirk got some decent court time, but there weren't that many outstanding options ahead of him anyway and Dallas were still building up their squad to make a run for the finals, the Pistons on the other hand have pretty much built up and are making their run right now. Having Darko come on in 3 or 4 years time will just be a bonus.

Larry Brown is doing a smart job with Darko and if I were a Pistons fan, I'd be happy at the moment.

The Postins probably have the deepest frontcourt in the East, and Darko is the youngest player in the league and by normal drafting rules shouldn't have been allowed into the draft. He won't contribute for at least 2 seasons, and I think the Pistons are doing exactly the right thing with him at the moment. Plenty of time for Darko, kid's only 18 and a half

I never really rated Brown. He has had the right teams in the past and didn't deliver at the business end of the season.

As for Darko, I have always been of the opinion that he should have stayed in Europe for another couple of years to develop a bit more and get more time. Ideally, it would have been good for Darko to go to one of the stronger european teams that are playing in the euroleague but Hemofarm would never have agreed to that even tho they could not offer him any stronger competition.

I always think that europeans shouldn't go to the NBA before they turn 21. This gives them the sort of grounding they need. Peja and Divac are classic examples. They stayed in europe and devloped their game to some degree and then went to the NBA still pretty young and both are having very good career.

And to pose a parallel question, do you think the same can be said for Don Nelson?

I think he's been coaching for about as long as Brown has, and is still searching for that elusive ring as a coach himself.

Darkos 18, the youngest player ever to play in the NBA and has a lot to learn. Throwing him to the wolves in the competition would do more harm than good as he'd be constantly abused. He's in the lucky position of being able to learn on a team thats winning, so he doesn't need to be played. Besides, he's behind Campbell, Okur, Rebraca and Wallace in the playing roster and three of those four are 7+ footers.

Put simply, Detroit can take their time with Darko.

So do I, but thats what occurred. There was a huge stink when it came out on the Detroit board after Carlisle had left. I think there was a reason why Joe D sacked him.

I would have argued with you here, but now I'm not so sure. Tonight we were level pegging with the Lakers at the Staples Centre at 3/4 time when Brown throws out our bench to start the the first 5 minutes of the 4th. Lakers go on a 14-5 run, starters come back on we peg them back to 3 and lose. There was nearly a riot on the Detoit board. Some very unhappy Pistons fans.

exactly.the media portray these old timer's as masterful coaches who can change a franchise,teach the young players, mold the team into a contender etc,etc..........yet they haven't won squat in 20 odd years and they have had very good teams in front of them

to me it seems like a neutral uninspired move to bring in Brown,time will tell i guess. I think the Bulls and Bucks have it right bringing in new coaches like Cartright and Porter. Especially Cartright.No-one is going to challenge him.He has already shown he is not afraid to bench players regardless of their status.

He is rated extremely highly and because of that, he is always the first choice for Team USA, but he has had some very good teams in the past and hasnt got close to a ring. I certainly dont rate him anywhere near the best in the league. I rate guys like Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Paul Silas, Carlise, Van Gundy, Pop, all before Brown.

i would stick in Pat Riley,Jeff van Gundy,Popovich,Silas,hell i might as well stick in Stan van Gundy as he has won the same amount of championships in 1/100th of the time it took brown.

I think it's only fair to rate Brown as one of the best basketball coaches ever-- or at least make an argument as such, now that he's won titles both in the NCAA and now in the NBA.

In fact, who would've thought that his team could have beaten the mighty Lakers in a best-of-seven series, let alone in just five games? I think Brown definitely deserves more than an ounce of credit for that.

Seriously though, I do think Larry is an extremely top coach.
