The AFL is keen to get more AFL presence in NSW with them hoping for there one day to be two teams in Sydney but the Roy Morgan polls show that in the 2 team cities Adelaide and Perth, one of the two teams in these cities has the lionshare of the support (West Coast and the Crows).
In Perth, out of the 1,110,000 people over 14 who said they follow AFL, 835,000 (or 75.2%) said they follow the West Coast Eagles, while only 275,000 follow the Dockers.
In Adelaide, out of the 989,000 people over 14 who said they follow AFL, 726,000 (or 73.4%) said they follow the Crows, while only 263,000 follow Port Adelaide.
This shows that in two team cities where one team has been established with a fair amount of success before a second team from that city enters 6 years (in Port Adelaide's case) or 8 years (in Fremantle's case) later, it proves to be difficult for the newer club to establish a supporter base in that case.
That's why it would be better if the AFL considered having a team out of Canberra before having a second team out of Sydney. Canberra has a stronger Australian football history than Sydney and is close to the Riverina which is a stronghold of Australian football. At the present time it would be difficult indeed for a new team in Sydney with the Swans capturing the hearts of most Sydneysiders who follow AFL. For a new team in Sydney, to be successful they would have to consider basing themselves in Sydney's west and playing out of Homebush but this would be very difficult considering Sydney's west is Rugby League heartland.
So my advise to the AFL, (if they care to listen!), is that if they want to further their presence in NSW/ACT is to seriously consider Canberra before they do Sydney.
