Article on it in todays age

Michael Gleeson | July 16, 2008
THEY have been one of the hottest properties on the field with only one loss this season but the Western Bulldogs have found it hard to find suitors off it, with the club losing its major sponsor for next year and so far being unable to attract a naming rights sponsor for the redeveloped Whitten Oval complex.
Despite sitting second on the ladder and playing for top spot this week, the Dogs will need to find a replacement for LeasePlan after it told the Bulldogs it would not renew its sponsorship for next year.
LeasePlan's decision could create an opportunity for the Bulldogs to combine the key club sponsorship with the naming rights of the new elite learning centre at Whitten Oval in a package it would hope could fetch upwards of $1.5 million a year.
The timing of these sponsorship opportunities during an economic slowdown and the falling sharemarket makes for a more challenging marketing push, which is mitigated somewhat by the Bulldogs' on-field efforts.
LeasePlan had been a key sponsor of the Dogs for six years since the club was in deep financial trouble and under threat of being forced to merge or relocate.
The Dogs have significantly improved their fortunes and now boast assets of more than $8 million, compared with the $3.5 million in liabilities they carried before the Whitten Oval upgrade.
The Bulldogs have debts of about $4.5 million and by the AFL's cut-off date this year had recorded a decrease in membership. They have made operating profits in recent years — $500,000 last year — after losing $3 million in 2003.
Western Bulldogs chief executive Campbell Rose said the club had been negotiating with numerous companies about the naming rights at Whitten Oval, but that would be revised now with the opportunity to bracket together the total sponsorship package.

Great opportunity here to land a big fish, by getting a massive sponsorship combining both sponsorship and naming rights for the Whitten Oval Redevelpment.
Fantastic opportunity for a large company to invest big bucks.
Let's hope so.

Disappointed in this piece. Hasn't presented the full picture by not stating that the club has probably earned a record amount of revenue from our membership this year with al the upgrades.

Don't worry about that sort of shit. Just enjoy that your boys are up and about on and off the field, and let god sort out the media :D

Re: LeasePlan to drop Western Bulldogs sponsorship

They've been terrific Leaseplan. Jumped on board during some difficult times. It's a shame they won't be around to share in the success that we all hope and believe is coming our way.

My guernsey still has the ICI badge on it!

Showing my age here, but I've got a couple of jumpers at home that I had as a kid... one has the Pyrox heaters logo on it, the other has the sponsors label of that well known and favourite drop of us all, Tooth KB lager. (Dougie Hawkins must've got them on board!)

From a timing point of view, its good that we are looking for a new sponsor now and not in a couple of years time whether GC and WS teams come on board.

Hopefully the downtown in the economy doesn't diminish the monetery return we get from our next sponsorship deal.

Let's look at the bright side. Our club is exciting on and off the field right now, why the hell wouldn't any business want to sponsor us?

Thanks Leaseplan, but we'll move on to bigger and better things.

We should pitch to big corps.
Sony Dogs!
IBM Dogs!
Crispy Creme/cream Dogs!
Nokia Dogs!
Virgin Dogs! - Bingo....

Re: LeasePlan to drop Western Bulldogs sponsorship

I think Leaseplan being mainly a car fleet leasing company, is doing things a bit tougher in this climate of rising petrol prices.

A lot of the companies they deal with are reducing the size of their fleets.
Good theory!!

Guys don't wont to sound like im not grateful, but if Lease plan has given us the flick its there own fault if they don't share in the future success.

Club is probably in its best position off the field and best position it has been on the field for quite some time. For a sponsor to jump of now is very surprising. Would have thought it will be easy for Cam and Co to find a new sponsor given our current position.

Thanks Lease Plan, jumped on board a tough times, but you don't know what your missing out on.

Good theory!!

No theory

Reality

Sponsorship deals are going to be tough as the Australian and world economy is slowing up.

"Leaseplan" is not the only company in this marketplace re-evaluating the benefits of sponsoring a sporting team.

And dont be fooled into thinking our next sponsor will offer anything more than our last sponsor, except for being able to afford being our sponsor.

Maybe even at a slightly less price.

Good idea but won't happen given the AFL's deal with Coca-Cola.

That was the first thing that came into my mind when I saw it but I didn't want to put a dent into doggiesin08 creative spirit by mentioning it :)

BTW it was a touch of irony that there was a big leaseplan ad with aker in the photo in the herald sun today. Good marketing ploy by the marketing execs at Leaseplan. Given the timliness of it, it would have achieved more attention then normal.

Lol, TBFB I wish I was doing marketing, but as you can probably tell by my use of 'lol' I am not nearly old enough qualified for any post graduate degrees. :D

I was just bored and made perfect sense to use Pepsi with is white line between red and blue. I'd imagine their are many other companies with similar colours, just so long as it doesn't turn out like that Richmond jumper with the Dick Smith yellow a horrible clash with their yellow sash.

I wasn't being sarcastic, it was something i hadn't thought about. I reckon you might be pretty well spot on.

I thought Leaseplan were expanding into Asia and that was the reason they pulled the plug. I don't mind - considering everything we touch this year turns to gold - I am sure we will pull a mouthwatering big fish and be the envy of many of the other clubs. Keep focusing on red and blue - to go with our club colours.
