IT was the night the records tumbled at AAMI Stadium.
Adelaide's 71-point thumping of fellow top-four aspirant Hawthorn on Saturday not only consolidated its top-eight standing and boosted its percentage but gave its fans plenty to crow about.
In a remarkably one-sided contest - given the wet conditions - the Crows dominated possession to such an extent they had statisticians scurrying for their record books.
Neil Craig's outfit smashed a handful of individual, club and AFL records and went close in several other categories.
They included:
FOUR players - Tyson Edwards (41), Scott Thompson (39), Andrew McLeod (39) and Chris Knights (32) - recording career-highs in disposals. Edwards broke his previous best by seven, Thompson beat his previous high by five, Knights by three and McLeod by one. What makes this more impressive is that Edwards and McLeod have been in the league for 13 years and Thompson seven.
FIVE players gathering 32 disposals ore more - the other being Simon Goodwin (33). This is the first time this has occurred in an AFL match. And no side previously has had three players register at least 39 possessions in a game.
THE Crows' tally of 212 handballs was a club record and the fifth-highest recorded. Their previous high was 187 against Geelong at Skilled Stadium in round 12, 2005.
GOODWIN'S 26 handballs was the equal-most by a Crow, joining Brett James, who had 26 against Brisbane in round one, 1997. Goodwin had just seven kicks for the match.
HAWTHORN'S 4.7 (31) was its lowest score against Adelaide. Its previous low was the 4.11 (35) it kicked in 1998.
THE Crows had more handballs (212) than kicks (206) for only the second time in club history. The only other time they did this was against Geelong in round 12, 2005, when they had 187 handballs and 169 kicks.
THEIR 418 disposals was the second-highest they have recorded in a game and their highest since round 16, 1993 when they had 431 against Richmond.
EDWARDS and McLeod each had a club record 25 handball-receives - the equal-third most recorded by Champion Data. The record is held by Scott Camporeale, who had 27 for Carlton against Port Adelaide in round six, 2000.
EDWARDS' 41 disposals was the equal-most by a player this season - joining the Bulldogs' Scott West and the Kangaroos' Adam Simpson in round five - while his 35 uncontested possessions were the most by a player this year.
THOMPSON'S 10 inside 50s were the most by a Crow this season. With 69 for the year, he has 17 more than any team-mate.
"It was a good night - everyone just kept finding the ball," running defender Graham Johncock said, adding he was surprised the Hawks did not try to curb McLeod's influence at half-back.
"They let him run free and he just kept picking them off."
And setting up his team-mates.

Not bad for a bunch of crocks on a wet night:D

Still a little more handball than necessary I'd say. We were lucky that Hawthorn let us have the extra numbers in defence which allowed use to use the ball so much.

Goodwin handballed 26 of his 33 possessions, which suggests he is prefering not to kick the ball & is probably still carrying an injury. Still a handy effort though!

Beat me to it... clearly the knee is still not 100%.

Terrific effort by the Crows on the weekend. I was hoping that McLeod and Thompson could get one more disposal each so that 3 players in the same team in the same game could get above the magical 40 possession mark. One thing that makes me wonder is that I find it weird how an injured player like Simon Goodwin can get so much of the ball. Yes he is a fantastic player but someone said he only played three quarters of football. 33 touches in three quarters is a phenominal effort. He is not the only player that can do that. Chris Judd managed to get 35 disposals and he is carrying an injury apparently. If you handball more, do you get more of the ball? It seems as though that is the case because Judd got 17 kicks and 18 hand-balls and Goodwin got 7 kicks and a whopping 26 handballs.

I also think that Tyson Edwards gets under-rated by the footballing community. What do you guys think of McLeod's chances for the Brownlow. I seem to think he is a chance and I'm not a Crows supporter.

Chris Knights also looked alright on the weekend. Quality player.

It makes sense that this would be the case. In general, a handball travels less distance than a kick. The ball usually remains in the same general vicinity. For this reason, you're more likely to receive the ball back again (by way of another handball) if you handball it yourself.

In comparison, after a kick, the ball is usually either further downfield or further across the field laterally. It is no longer in the same general vicinity as the player who disposed of it, hence the player is less likely to receive the ball back again (discounting the keepings off "basketball crap").
