Folks, I've been out of the country for a while, so I need a reminder of a few of the facts-of-life type things from back home. In Aust. what is the legal age:

(1) To drink alcohol
(2) To buy/use tobacco products
(3) of consent
(4) for marriage (with parental consent)
(5) to drive a motor vehicle
(6) to vote

If there are variations between states, please specify.

Thank you in advance... :)

From what I remember, in SA it was the following

(1) 18
(2) 18
(3) 16
(4) ??
(5) 16
(6) 18

I think...

Other States?

To the best of my knowledge in NSW, but since I'm now well over that age my information may be out of date:

1. Buy alcohol - 18
2. Buy/use tobacco - 18
3. Of consent - 16
4. For marriage - 18 I think
5. Drive a M/V - 16 for your Ls, 17 for your Ps.
6. Vote - 18.

But does anyone stick to all those? I doubt it.

I tell you what! Over here in the US they make a big deal over that stuff. I went to a bar/grill with the wife and some friends and the wife forgot her ID. THey refused to serve her a drink, and she's in her 30s! And the barmaid was hovering around making sure she didn't sip a bit from ours. I thought that was a bit intrusive, personally, and had to speak with the manager, who also wouldn't budge. They have this weird, love-hate relationship with liquor over here. Jack Daniels Whiskey for example is produced in a TN county that forbids the sale of liquor ("dry" county)! BTW the min. drinking age over here is 21.

(4) 16 with perental concent I'm pretty sure.

Now that you mention it, that sounds about right: 16 with parental consent, 18 without.

Hmmm, I am amazed by the relative uniformity between the States mentioned. I expected greater variation.

We have ID checks here sometimes - usually a sign that the place has just hired a new bouncer who's keen to establish his neo-Nazi credentials rather than to stop under-age people getting in. These guys usually don't last long in clubs because they're too heavy-handed and end up working for the SCG Trust.
It's a big tougher now in this era of photo licenses as ID. We used to borrow paper licenses for the night in my under-age drinking days. As long as you memorised the date of birth and the middle name, you'd never have a problem getting past even the most totalitarian bouncer.

Well, I'm not sure about other states, but in Vic you can actually have sex from the age of 10, as long as the person is no more than 2 years older than you.

It's a sensible rule really. It's rediculous to put a legal age (especially when it's as high as 18), on a natural function. Not that many people are doing it at 10 (well... none that I knew when I was 10), but really it ensures people aren't getting into trouble with the law over something that's natural, and completely consentual.

So yeah, in vic

(1) 18, unless accompanied by parents.
(2) to buy 18, there is no age limit on using.
(3) 16. But like bombergal said, sex isn't against the law after 10, as long as the other person is within 2 years of your age.
(4) I believe it's 16 with perental consent, 18 without.
(5) 16 for learners, 18 for Probationary licence.
(6) 18

I was close, I only vaguely remembered it from legal studies three years ago. Doesn't apply to me so I don't care.

In Victoria, it would be as follows (last time I checked):

a) 18 years
b) 16 years
c) 16 years
d) 16 years
e) 17 years
f) 18 years

hope that helps :)

keep smiling

Just this week the South Australian Government announced that 20 will be the age before you can have your licence in SA from when I don't know.

age 10!!! I hate to say this, don't take offense but what are you on???? ain't no way that could happen, 16 is the legal age. Both parties have to be of legal age, and I cannot seriously see how the authorities can condone this. Have to strongly disagree with you there.. *S*

I did this in both Health last year when studing sexual abuse, and I have done units of legal studies. It's a fact; age 10 is the law. *shrugs* you don't have ot believe me but facts are facts.

The law in Victoria is: Between the ages of 10 and 16 you can legally have sex with another person as long as that person is not more than 2 years older than you and you both agree to it. Once you are 16 you can have sex with any other person who is over 16 as long as you both agree to it.
