I've explained why Wallace played him, Frawley tried to play him as a lock down small defender and had to end up hiding him, who knows why Hardwick lets him get away with some of the games he's handed in as captain.

As for why they got it wrong, none of them have had anything better on offer. That doesn't make Newman good enough at the role by default.

The one constant apart from never playing finals in Newman's time, which is no coincidence. By that I don't mean it was his fault alone, but he's been a willing contributor to a failed rebound system where players regularly shirk responsibility for a decade and that's harmed us as much as any other single thing.
Yet as mentioned Newman is still here 192 games later while others have come and gone. Now you can believe that he got the spot by default because there was no-one else was good enough to take the spot off of him or you could accept that Newman is actually servicable at what he does. Odd are that you're not going to do the latter.

If you want to pretend that opposition sides change their attacking match-ups at only a small fraction of what we change our defensive ones, and that our coaches manage to far more often than not outwit the opposition coaches and get the match-ups we want, then please, fully indulge yourself in that fantasy.
Well aware that both sides make adjustments all game. My point was that Newman doesn't just get stuck on the oppositions worse forward as you claimed, as they usually try and get Deledio onto that player to free him up more. Then you changed the arguement.

Let the example-free wholesale invention commence.
I'm sitting at the game and can see what happens as it happens. You are the one who makes assumptions based on what the stats say and what you see when you freeze the replay. I'd suggest that is more likely to have some wholesale invention happening that what I see.

I've offered to compare my analysis publicly to yours as seen from the ground, you've ignored the offer once again because you - quite rightly - suspect you'll get flogged. I'm not going to write a detailed explanation of how I analyse games solely for your entertainment.
I don't sit there and make detailed notes where I pause and rewind the replay over and over and study the stats to make sure that I see what I want to see. So why am I going to compare notes with someone who does. I go by what I see at the game as it happens

You are wasting my time and you well know it. And we both know why you're doing it.

Seeing that isn't going to happen, let me instead ask you; are there any examples anywhere else on the board of this type of 'discussion?'

You take a piece of something I post (often something I've posted in response to someone other than you) and then by way of your '100 innocent and perfectly reasonable questions,' oblige me to sign on for a 5+ day endless multi-quoting debate where it would take increasingly endless hours of my time to respond. If I try to abbreviate the ridiculous volume of words into something vaguely manageable, you claim I'm avoiding points. If I ignored you, then you'd pretend it was because I couldn't answer and harp on endlessly about that. If I ask you to stop being an arseh*le and wasting hours of my time (as I already have numerous times), you pretend your behaviour is normal and reasonable and that my complaints are not - I'm just trying to avoid your awesome debating skills.:o

Can you name any other instances of you doing the above to someone else here, day after day, year after year? There are none, right? So what makes me so 'special?' What on earth do you think gives you the right to subject other people to such treatment? - I believe the word they use these days is 'bullying.'
I nit pick your posts to discuss the points that interest me or where I believe that you are wrong. The fact that you then go into massive detail in reply is not my fault. IMO its because you have this desire to prove that everything you say is correct. As Claws said you often change the goalposts, when the discussion doesn't seem to be going your way. I have also noticed in the past that you are quite happy to offer short reponses to posters who agree with your POV.

BTW Ray as much as you would like to think you're special the truth is you're not. As a Mod I have to follow all threads and when you post I often check the responses to ensure that posters aren't taking pot shots and you and you aren't returning serve.

Its the tiger BF forum dude. ;)

have to say i really had a good chuckle at that response.
fact is its not about rasor and rt debating about newman which is what has happened. surely we can now get back to what this thread is about.

ya know even i think there are a fair few things worth getting upbeat about if not excited.
there will always be pros and cons though no matter the thread.

just to cheer everyone up. i will say it is getting harder to identify an outright dud now that is something to get excited about.

Not that I want to rehash old posts but how did this thread go from lets get excited about Richmond to Newman is an average plodder ????

:o

i dont believe anyone has called newman a plodder other than raysor perhaps.

you have to admit with the likes of batchelor ellis the recruitment of morris if it pans out houli spending time back newman spot is open to question.

as far as captaincy goes well not my type of captain but that aside when all areas of the job are considered hes been pretty good imo.

the simple truth is when the chris newmans of the club have to fight for a spot you will know we will finally be challenging and building good depth.
at 30 newman is fighting for his spot imo despite him being captain.that is something if not to get excited about look forward to we are building and newman at 30 wont be a part of it when we get there.

in two to three yrs time id like to see martin as captain someone who will lead from the front with good skills and a real physicality to his game. someone who will lead by deed who will go where others wont. someone with some mongrel.

Let's get thing back on track then......

Here's what I'm excited about:
• Post emerging in 2011 as the most exciting young key defender in the game.

• Nathan Foley becoming an elite midfielder again

• Trent Cotchin winning the Brownlow Medal (if not in 2012, then the next year, if not the next year, the year after - either way, I'm putting money on it each year until it happens)

• Brett Deledio in the midfield in 2012

• Gibson Turner - Call it man love, call it what you will but I liked what I saw on the highlights and hope this boy makes it. Given the fact we've set up an indigenous centre but don't have any indigenous boys on our list bothers me a lot. This boy will make it...

• Media start writing articles comparing the 2006 draft pick no 13 vs the 12 picks below him, the 2007 no 2 draft pick vs the pick below him, the 2008 no 8 draft pick vs the 7 picks below him, the 2009 pick no 3 vs the 2 below him......etc

• Beating Carlton in Rd 1 and setting us on track to......

• Making the 8 in 2012

• Getting Brendan Goddard through free agency for season 2013

• Going top 4 and contending in 2013-14

Excited?! You bloody bet!

Well we can all relax now, someone from the club has finally come out and said that we have no more excuses and its time for us to deliver.

RICHMOND onballer Daniel Jackson says there will be no excuses for failure next season.

After two seasons under coach Damien Hardwick, Jackson said yesterday it was time for the Tigers to stop falling back on inexperience and deliver.

"We are looking to really have a crack next year," Jackson said.

Santa, you in the past have called Newman C grade (in another post admittedly) which I disagree with given I think he's the best kick at the club and have no idea what impact he's having behind closed doors...

Cotchin is our next captain, no 2 ways about it. He will die for the cause during a game and stand in front of the cameras at the end of it and explain what happened like a poet. Chris Judd and Gary Ablett won't be seen as the best players of their generation because of him....

Martin will be an all time great player for the Tigers but he doesn't strike me as someone who's all that interested in being captain. Some people talk, some people do. Some do both. Dustin Martin does. When it happens, don't argue.....

I picked "no more Excuses" as my motto for the season in a previous thread.

Only losers need excuses, time we all started believing in ourselves and thinking like winners. A truism of sport is that you'll never be any better than you believe you are.

I believe we only need to perform at the level we did for the first 9 and last 5 games this year to make finals. I believe that we can be better next year than we were in those games last year. There is no reason why we can't be even better than making up the numbers in the eight, unless we start looking for reasons why we can't. Its time to take a deep breath and fill our lungs with confidence and pride, and perform. I believe we can do it, let's hope the players can play with pride and confidence and they too truly believe they can do it.

Go Tiges...

forget about the grade.
IVE DONE THIS BEFORE.
Just for you and can you tell me what you disagree with.

A = ELITE
B = VERY GOOD
C = GOOD CORE LIST PLAYER.

Newman is a v good kick but other aspects of his game make him a C GRADER A GOOD PLAYER.he has enough weaknesses to affect his rating.

So where do you rate chris as a footballer on my scale.

Newman is a Very Good footballer at worst (B). At worst.

He didn't have a great 2011 and I think some people have punished him for it but he came into the season as our best kick of the football at our club. Hitting a target is my no 1 indicator given the fact that has been our biggest on field problem for as long as I can remember (close 2nd's were: tackling, holding our feet & allowing 10 goal defeats become 20 goal defeats)

He had some disappointing games in 2011 but he'll be back. He's not 33-34, he's 29. B Grade at worst and A grade on his day.

I turned 40 this year and still remember the days when Richmond was a powerhouse and the Tiger army in full roar.

I have a close diehard Richmond supporter mate who I grew up with and cannot imagine the pain he has had to endure even though my own team is finally getting out of some seriously depressing times.

I love the enthusiasm of the Richmond fans but the club seems to have been cursed or something .... the Wallet debacle and then hitting rock bottom just when the expansion teams with all their concessions came in was just icing on the cake in regards to this curse.

I for one would like to see a strong Richmond outfit but for the life of me just cannot see it for the next few years.

You have a some stars, that cannot be denied, but IMHO you fall badly away after your top 6-8 players ... I think for the first time in a while you are on the right path and like Hardwick as coach but your recruiting this year has been made up of a club desperate to fill holes with players cut from a substandard rug. This of course was just a consequence of a weak draft caused by GWS's plunder but I would not be too confident of a finals appearance this year.

Good luck, except against the Blues, keep the faith and stay the course.

I for one look forward to hating Richmond with a passion again ... the sooner the better!

In all seriousness, there are some of us here who wonder if a bone or something has been pointed at the club. There's nothing else like it in sport in the world......

pretty accurate outsiders look but i like to know who the substandard players are? draftees are exactly that so the're out. so maric and morris is who your talking about. as you saw in the last game v the blues our rucks are junk so maric is a definate upgrade on them without costing us a top draft pick.yes an a grade ruck would have been good but none were available(clarke isnt a a grade ruck). morris does fit a need but remember he has come from a b+f in the sanfl so its not like he is garbage. the blues slotted in a few lower league players to fit a need so i guess im saying you always need players to do a role but it doesnt mean they are duds.
