Let's go Australia, Olympics thread

I wonder how long it will be before a rival to the Olympics that is open to being "dirty" could begin.

Would be interesting to see the limits the human body could do when assisted. A bit like bodybuilding.

Imagine a sub 8 second 100m.

I would bet it would out rate these so called clean Olympics on TV and attendances.

As soon as they invent cyborgs. I can't wait.

So the NWO has been going on for the last 50 years? New implies recent and the way of things is not recent. I like the idea of the Olympics, but there has not been a clean games in, well, possibly longer than the 50 years.
I'm referring to the current (new) state of affairs where the western world has gone back to the "Russia is bad", "China is bad" mentality because of what they are fed by the MSM. But meh, whatevs.

Im not sure people could go much faster than tbey currently do. Theres records that stand or stood for decades. There comes a point when the human body just can't do faster.

I'm not sure it's bagging for the sake of it.

If Kyle Chalmers places 5th nobody turns a hair. Was barely expected to qualify for the final. Media didn't build up to be anything more.

They did build up the Campbell's and others based upon their world standings and the records they held. Of course they did - these were favourites in their events who bombed.

Opals went undefeated in qualifying then bomb at the first final.

What irks is not that these are kids who are outclassed by better competitors - what irks is these are kids who have been outclassing competitors over the past 12 months but go to pieces when it matters.
It's a hard one to dissect, where do we improve for Tokyo? Swimming needs to hold trials a month out from the Olympics, not 5, that has to change. I think we are peaking too early in the year, and then when the Olympics come along, there is no recent form.

Hockey was a huge disappointment, we haven't missed out on medals there for 30 years.

Thank god for our underfunded and unheralded athletes in sailing. Every time they drag us over the line while our more fancied sporting 'stars' with massive AIS funding opportunities stink it up in swimming and cycling. Sailing deserves more support, especially in the laser class which is gaining a massive following in Australia at the moment. Wish theyd reward form and not failure. No doubt the swimmers will get a new training facility and the opals a pre-games training camp with an NBA team, meanwhile our sailors are at the op shop buying wet suits and stealing rope at the local pier.
You do realise most swimmers get paid two fifths of sweet **** all? Most struggle holding jobs because of the training required, with very little financial return. I don't think a lot of the general public actually get this.

I liked looking at the Mens 400m record and I have to say the progression is consistent. From September 1964 (44.9) to 2 days ago(43.03) the record has dropped 1.87seconds.

The 100m record in the same period has dropped from 10.06 to 9.58 .

Then don't do it.

No ones holding a gun to their head.

Most Olympians get looked after though. I know the gulf between those who haven't made any squads is huge , but to be fair I think the post alluded to Olympic competitors and so is fair

So it's roughly a similar drop on average. The advances in technology during that period has been enormous and thats only the legal side of it. I just can't see a sub 9.4 second 100 anywhere close.

On the subject of athlete funding. I know its easy to say 'don't do it if you can't afford it' but I imagine we all have passions in our lives that don't bring us financial gain. Its the same with the vast majority of these guys. Only the high profile athletes within the high profile sports can actually make a decent living from it.

Thats where the American system is so good. Get your college degree while you train and race.

As someone who has been involved in a sport that is in the olympics, that mentality has always been there - and for good reason. It has not gone away.

If we change our swimming trials we won't see any benefits in Tokyo. The athletes are worried about how to handle the double-tapering that would be required.

As Giaan said we did try it, but if you're going to change you have to stick it out. For mine its worth a shot in this next 4 years, try it before the Worlds and the Comm Games when the comp isn't so fierce to bed it down.

What about the women's 100m record, since 1988!!

I think because she passed away in such circumstances as she did, they'll leave it out of respect.

But I do agree, and I wonder why we have never heard it other than she's American. Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson were dubious as well. I mean you have an apparently healthy woman in her 40s dropping dead, albeit from epilepsy. Yeah it happens but reality is is widely acknowledged she was doped up.

Edit- she was 38

More medals on offer for our Equestrian and Sailing athletes today. And lets hope the Boomers can get it done.

What about everything else they receive though. Media attention, televised swimming trials, possible massive sponsorships, dieticians, movement specialists, sports scientists, amazing training facilities, personal coaches and millions upon millions invested in their sport. Compare that to a sport like sailing and it's embarrassing the gulf in actual achievements compared to dollars spent. Not every swimmer will make it rich but the positive far and away outweigh the negatives.

Just wow. On one hand you want Australia to perform better, but on the other you don't quite understand the dedication and sacrifice required to even qualify for the Olympics. If everyone had your attitude we would have an Olympic team the size of one of those pacific islands.
