How many get those massive sponsorships? Those are generally only after you have been successful. Before that, you will need the dieticians and movement specialists and sports scientists and to pay for the coaching and the training venue time as well as those other specialists. Who pays for those in the first place?

A lot of the spend from the Federal Government and the National Sporting Body happens after that athlete has actually achieved something. Also, the sponsorship and costs for the televised trials would not go to the athletes competing - who would have to pay entry fees etc, but to the National Sporting Body. What would trickle down to the athletes is nothing from the money coming in there.

There is a lot of complete misconceptions going on in this thread about what it takes to achieve at the highest level and the cost.

Im talking about the budget that gets spent on sailing vs the one on swimming and the results that they show for the cost. My argument was never about who has a harder life, but who is given more opportunity to succeed and what they do with that.

The use of sailing was an example of a sport that gets nothing in funding but massively outrun their claim, I would love us to reward all the sports that dont get as much recognition but achieve greatly. Shooting, sailing, archery and kayaking are just a few that come to mind. Why not share the pie....give everyone a crack.

But those sports are much, much easier to do well in because (relatively) few people do sailing around the world compared to sports like running and swimming.

The money should go to the blue chip events that people are interested in participating in and watching. Rather than more obscure sports we may pinch a medal in because the good countries don't care about it.

I'd personally be happier if we spent $0 on shooting, sailing, archery, kayaking, BMX, judo, trampolining... even if it meant fewer medals overall.
