This thread is dedicated to Xavier Clarke.

Turning 26 this year the X man has played 105 games for StKilda and kicked 49 goals. He is an indiginous player who was drafted from St Marys in the Northern Territory with selection #5 in the 2001 National Draft.

Despite much criticism X is a brilliant player when fit with amazing talent, however is not durable, and often finds himself on the sideline.

Xavier is quick, hard at it, has decent foot skills and is a good tackler. He can break the line when playing in the backline and pop up for a goal when forward. I find that he is most effective off the half back line, adding skill and pace. He can also take a hanger.

Often refered to as the 'Clarkes', Xavier and brother Raphael cop some serious flack for being shit. Now i'll admit I am not a fan of Raph as I believe he has terrible awareness, and doesnt have the required attack on the ball nor football brain, but I don't think it is fair on Xavier to be judged by his brothers performances (two finals playing loose doesnt quite cut it Raph).

I am sick of hearing people talk about how 'shit' Xavier is when he is genuinely a good player who unfortunately we will never see the best of due to his terrible run with injury.

He's supposedly the softest bloke since Xavier Clarke was drafted

Whether or not this moron has ever seen X play I don't know. I assume he hasn't. Yeah a lot of aboriginal players can been seen as soft, because they are generally outside players, but how X man can be called that when he is genuinely a player who attacks the ball hard (which in many cases has left him injured).

I really look forward to seeeing Xavier playing this year, Ross said on 3aw that they also believe his best footy is played from behind the ball so hopefully that means morre half back flank. If he can have a solid preseason and an uninterupted year (remembering that both brothers years were again interupted last year by the death of their father) there is no doubt Xavier will prove many of the doubters wrong. Good luck X

Ross said that he has bulked up to 80 kgs (haha) and is moving him from down forward back to a Half Back/Midfield kind of role.

massive upside in this, well I was going to say kid, but he isn't a kid anymore. Massive upside in this man.

We are about a 2 goals better side when he is up and running.

Hope he gets back to some better form.

On top of the soft jibes I'll never get why people call him a hack? Missing shitloads of footy through injury doesn't make you a hack and anyone who's seen him play uninhibited would know how good he is. Started the season with a couple of very good performances iirc particularly against Carlton and Essendon.

I like the thought of him on the wing but hbf/hff wherever he plays I'll be happy just so long as he can stay uninjured. Rough Edges is spot on, we're clearly a better side with him playing, his best assets are pretty much everything we lack as a side.

I'm sure you've grown to expect nothing less of me Tassie ;)

I still have hopes that he will get fit enough to play midfield. He is good enough, but it would take two seasons without an injury break to bring out the best in him. I think his playing back flank is the best way to get him fit enough to play midfield, but it is not where we we see his best football.

He is the goal scoring midfielder we have needed all along. He just needs to stay on the park.

Kildonian is right - he just needs to stay on the park.

I don't agree with your assessment of Raph, and this year will be a coming out party for the other Clarke brother.

That could be read totally the wrong way lol

But I agree, I have high hopes for Raph this year, there wouldn't be much more satisfying than watching him play every game and prove all the w***er doubters wrong!

I agree X is a walkup start every game but he needs to put in a lot better game tally this year to hold his place for season 2010.
If he unluckey enough to break down again this year he should be off the list at the end of the season
To keep injured players year after year is not going forward.

It's definitely a make or break year for X you would think. The club can't be expected to keep on carrying him with the limited output he has had the past few years, so he really needs to produce a good season this year.

Fingers crossed he can finally stay injury free and string a good run of games together. Not only for his own sake but for the team as well. He would give us a massive boost in the midfield with his pace and skill, it would virtually be like having a new recruit given the lack of game time he has had in recent years.

It annoys me when opposition fans judge him, when clearly, his been injured 75% of the last 2-3 years AND they have hardly watched him play. They are like sheep I tells ya!

Anyhow, he started off 08 pretty well if I recall.. Getting around 25 touches or so in the first few games before injury.

And lol @ Dal Santo.

I don't think it's make or break.

He needs to have a decent year, but even if he struggles a bit and shows a bit aswell, i think we'd keep him.

Certainly not worth delisting him I don't think as he is clearly in our best side.

2008 was a very bad year for him. Worst ever as far as games played.
I would expect that if he can get a decent run of games in a specific position he has the ability to become a 15+ disposal player he needs to be to ensure himself a spot.

In total

Year Games Disposals Disp/Game
2002 16 136 8.5

2005 9 132 14.7
2006 13 168 12.9
2007 18 235 13
2008 8 105 13

I am not sure - if I remember correctly, he only got a one year contract and it took them quite a while to get it signed.

Lyon has been pretty tough with his decisions and I fear that if X Clarke doesn't overcome his injury problems, he may be in trouble.

Just ask Jayden Attard.

I hope he makes it - and I am convinced that his brother will be a star in 2009 !

X should have been a star for us now. Can we honestly say that he was ever 100% fit in his whole career. Such shame on the previous coaching and fitness staff. They butchered some of our players. At age 26 will we ever see his full potential? I doubt it.

Hmmm if he doesn't play more than 10 games this year we'd have to look at moving him. He needs at least 2 solid years to produce his best footy and if he can't get out on the park for a prolonged period, we may have to make a tough call.

I really dont want to start a flame war - and I am definately not accusing anybody on this forum of it - the critisism of both X and Raph on here has been for the most fairly-however I feel there is much much more to the hate and vitriol some "critics" have of the Clarke Brothers.

The hate and bile spewed at Raph last season was appalling and while X has not copped the same critisism as Raph - it has been pretty hateful all the same.

personally I am dissapointed with X and think Raph will eventually be the better of the two. X tries hard and has skills but is very inconsistant mainly due to a shocking run with injuries. And whomever reckons X is soft are clueless on football. Not soft at all.

I would however love to see both Clarkes have very good consistant seasons and stck it up the bigoted clowns who hide behind the fact that the two boys are footballers so they think they can spew filthy hate with impunity.

As I said I am definately NOT putting anyone on this forum and especially in this thread in the category.

I agree with Joffaboy - there is a clear difference between being soft and being fragile.

Xavier puts his head over the ball repeatedly, and has toughened up significantly (in his style of play) since his first three seasons. Unfortunately his body has not held up its part of the bargain.

I really hope he can stay on the park this season, as he has class, is a good finisher, and with Clinton Jones can provide some real forward line pressure.

I wish X wouldn't go in so hard sometimes. That final against Melbourne where he came off the bench, went for a crazy mark within about 30 secs, and then laid a tackle, and ended up injured just symbolised how he plays a game not suited to his physique. Even Hamill did not last playing like that.

I went to a late season VFL game at Pratt Park against the Pies where he was in everything, including getting squashed at the bottom of packs. Looked absolutely spent at the end of the game and walked across the ground without his shoes on.

Probably encouraged the selectors to play him against the Cats, but was nowhere near ready.

If he gets a full pre-season under his belt, we will probably forget his past injury troubles pretty quickly.

Look, I really want X to do well, but I have my doubts now. I just read the recent article about him again (you can find the link on the media thread). He's talking about only needing to do 1 or 2% more to be fit all the time... sheesh, dude, 1% doesn't account for missing 2/3rds of a season. Then he's talking about being injury free this year, but lo and behold he's got a "slight calf strain" slowing him down in pre-season. Add to that, he wants to play as running back - I think this is the role Lyon wants for Dempster/Begley/Ray. Where does Xavier come on that list (mind you, a fully fit Xavier, which is practically non-existant)? I would put him just behind Dempster... but not if he's battling injuries...

Really want to be proven wrong. So want Xav to do well.

first its a slight calf strain secong its something else...really wished he was having a completely injury free preseason, could be a tough year ahead if his niggles continue.
