One of the great voices of all time and a man universally respected for his integrity and artistic vision is close to death. This is a facebook post from his family.

Dear Friends,
Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey. ...

Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage...

We appreciate all the love and support and concern.
From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandyad

Legend... sad news

The lack of action in this thread is a very good reflection of how terrible the music taste is on Bigfooty. This subject on other forums I frequent have over 10 pages at least.

Sadly true. 'The Band' changed the course of American music, due in no small measure to Levon. Such a true voice. Such a great drummer. 'Music from the Big Pink' was the first album I ever heard on headphones - in two ways an introduction to another world. 'The Band' ended up not being so popular in Australia, mostly because there were no individual 'guitar heroes' or such. Just great musicians and singers putting in purely for the sum of the whole. I saw 'The Band' when they toured Australia. in the 80s, after Robbie Robertson's departure. They were sensational, even without Robbie.

Never heard anyone say a bad word about Levon, even after the acrimonious split with Robertson. The story goes that Levon was still performing for fans, in his own barn, up until 12 months ago. Would have been a great gig to catch.

Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble. They were like the old Medicine Shows that he grew up watching in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas.

I can't believe the lack of coverage this has had in Australia. Levon was a giant, there will never be another like him.
I saw The Band two nights running in New Orleans in 1994, two more perfect nights of music I am yet hear.
The Band, grown up music for grown up listeners.

Australia have overlooked some great music over the music, and I know The Band to have been one of the greatest bands that ever played. Levon is a huge lost and it is the passionate fans that truly appreciate an artist of that ilk. Tom Petty played one of his solo tunes in the Heartbreakers show yesterday in tribute.
