Similar thread to the Travis Cloke one, only this is the more immediate future.
Maxy has 1-2 years left in him and is so valuable to our team and backline, once he retires who is he replaced by?

Sharenberg is the obvious replacement. Adam Oxley also comes into mind. Hopefully we still have a player playing Nick Maxwell's role after he retires because it gives our defenders confidence when they know someone can easily third man up and spoil the ball into safety or even mark the ball and send it the other way. The thing I'm excited about when Maxy retires is that his likely replacements will have better foot skills then him.

Serious post - Maxy is playing pretty well, and his form is holding up, and indeed has been better than last season. I was initially thinking this was his last year and he'd drift in/out of the side, but reckon there's a fair chance he'll go around again.

Scharenberg the obvious one.

The obvious answer is Ben Reid, sorry but it is.

Reid reads the play just as well as Maxwell does and I still seriously doubt whether we can play Reid up forward the majority of the time, or if we absolutely need to at all (White, Cloke, Second ruck and small/medium forwards is enough).

But past that we have a slew of options for the future. Scharenberg, Ramsay, Oxley, Frost and even Darcy Moore could be future half backs that play the Maxwell role.

Scharenberg has been floated as the obvious replacement, but I see Scharenberg being played like a good, non-soft Gibbs across half back and in the midfield.

I'll throw one name out there - Lachlan Keeffe. Brown to play on the gorillas and Frost to play on the lead up forwards (quicker closing speed, his mongrel would be more effective). I've always viewed Keeffe as a taller Reid. Has fantastic balance, well weighted kicking off both feet, reads the play well and he has a midfielder's agility. He doesn't have Reid's bullet kicking, but being dual sided, composed and agile means that he's rarely rushed into trouble/shanking the ball.

Reid himself is also a good pick for the role, but the prospect in 2015/2016 (when we'll be realistically challenging) of a hardened Grundy/Witts/Reid/Cloke structure is simply mouthwatering.

We also have Darcy Moore who can play at either end to reinforce our depth and come in through the VFL.

He has said this is his last year.

There is no nick maxwell role richo

Why do I get a feeling Langdon will fill this role very well?
I agree with this one. He credited Maxy with advising him on how to play the role shortly before being awarded BOG for his performance in it, and the Rising Star to boot. I don't think it's any more premature to earmark Langdon for the role than Scharenberg, given Langdon has actually played AFL football to date.

no can fill maxwell's role because the man has made it his. It is an unique position, and remember after leigh brown left we spent so much time looking for his replacement without any real success. I'd rather not have anyone try to fit into the 'maxwell' role because it could impact on their game style. Plus we would be better of having a new dimension added into our backline as that would give us greater flare in defence. Apart from that his leadership skills is what that will be missed the most.

We shall sorely miss acts of god like this by our great former leader.

I don't think we need to get stuck creating "another imaginary role" like the Leigh Brown saga. Maxy has been effective because he's Maxy. Remember how people pined when Jimmy Clement retired? Lucky we had Maxy to step up into that back line general we needed. I think our back line will evolve again when he retires and another leader will emerge to be that general. Keefy has been very vocal this year, Tooves will always lead by example and the young guns will play their own footy. You can't replace players like for like really. Frosty could play sort of "Like Maxy" but why do it? Just structure up the best way we can with whatever we have.

Total agreement, Maxy is and always will be an original who crafted his own position. Far better for Frost to be the absolute best Frost he can be, ditto Shazza, ditto Langers etc., only in this way will we get the best out of each.

I'm not saying there's a role that is Maxwells that is named after him, I'm talking who is Maxwells successor in the back half. Similar to someone replacing Travis Cloke when he retires, he doesn't play in the Travis Cloke role.

As for a few of the mentions, to replace Maxwells part in the side, besides bravery, leadership and guts you need to be able to play on a variety of opponents. As well as being the loose man down back this season Maxwell has scalps over 200cm 100kg forwards in Ben Griffiths and Daniel Currie, he has also played on Winderlich on Anzac Day, so Maxy hasn't had the privilege this year to play entirely loose. Oxley would have been a great replacement, but he is about 15kgs off from competing against the 3rd tall 200cm forwards that Maxwell has had the job on.

if no one replaces the "nick Maxwell role" if fine as long as we have a player that can still third man up packs in the backline.

Toovey can play on all sizes

Maybe we can come up with a new pseudo-Americanised term for our game, the Maxwellback role. Bwuce will be all over it. "Langdon caresses the ball to Young; you just get the feeling that he's playing that Maxwellback role to a tee, don't you?"
