just read this article here regarding the new aussie soccer league and there's a queensland lions team.

do the Lions have a share or even full ownership?

Nope, no ties whatsoever. The soccer Lions are a (reasonably) long-standing club. http://qldlions.com/history.htm

In fact the Brisbane Lions soccer club (who've obviously changed their name to differentiate themselves) were a bit put out when the Bears-Fitzroy merger happened. I stand to be corrected, but I think there was some talk of legal action at the time that obviously came to nothing. I also remember they got into a spot of bother trying to offer Brisbane Lions season tickets with a non-descript advert in the local paper, that were obviously just tickets to see local soccer games.

Brisbane AFC brought the naming rights to Brisbane Lions from the now named Queensland Lions soccer club. When the merger happened, there was a bit of talk that the Brisbane Lions AFC couldn't be called that, but some of the $millions from the merger when on aquiring the name from the now named Queensland lions soccer club.

When the Fitzroy/Bears merger took place, the AFL club tried to say that people would not confused the two, so the SOccer club ran a small add in the Courier Mail offering memberships to the Brisbane Lions for $20-00.

Well it seems that most did confuse the two, when about 1500 people responded to the add, without one taking up the membership offer :D

Oh well, just a story that made me smile at the time, good luck to the Soccer Club, hope they do well.

And all these years on the Receptionist at the Brisbane Lions AFC still gets calls from ppl wanting to leave a message for their mum whom their supposed to meet for lunch in front of the 6th line of poker machines but are going to be late so mum should go and get a table and set them up for lunch and just wait.

I recknon these ppl get mighty confused when they get told we don't have a social club open so their mum couldn't be there waiting for them!

20klm and a few years apart in naming rights, but hey, they're still at 'the lions' so the calls still must keep coming in.

The soccer club most definately were going to sue the AFL club over the name. The AFL club ened up paying the lions soccer club over $1M for the name Brisbane Lions, which resulted in the case never going to court.

The soccer club then used this money to build a big social club, which is now one of the biggest in the state. Smart operaters the socccer club. I also wish them well in the new soccer league.

I can't help thinking this is the dumbest move by a football club (any code) in years. Lets reallly confuse everyone. Is it cashing in on a 'brandname'? Has the Lion become the new Queensland fauna symbol perhaps? What brain at SoccerOz thought this one up? Geez, couldn't they have just gone with one of those modern jazzy names like the Queensland Twisters (very American!) instead of reverting to a traditional team moniker like the Lions. And in Queensland maroon too? Anyone know???

I remember it well, I also remember that the QLD Lions signed an agreement not to use the name Lions in any national competition. So one would assume that if its not changed quickly it will end up in court this time.

The soccer club were the ones who instigated the legal action last time, as they wanted the AFL to change the name of the new merged entity. Thus Brisbane had to pay for the name Lions.

That and the Fitzroy Liabilities being a lot more than stated in documents at the time of the merger, meant that Brisbane actually got none of the 6million, they were in debt over a million from the merger,They also went to court over the Hotel asset in Melbourne, that mysteriously dissapeared off the Balance sheet after the merger deal was signed.
