Bit harsh putting him in the possible de-listing section? He is on NSW s/ship isn't he?

I would think Gilbo is automatic selection, good runner and tough in defence and can tackle very well. Loves a run up the ground, positive player IMO

Armo/CJ for me a auto selections, in order to continually develop youth for prolonged success.

Pretty good analysis though

Haretuku has rarely been mentioned in the bests in the seconds for Casey.

Gilbert has been less than inspiring this year, his kicking has let him down.

Armitage and Jones would be two I would include based on recent performances, but they are not the players you build a team around.
P.S. don't consider Jones youth - he's older than Dal Santo !!!

Birss is a great kick and an extremely valuable player - he needs to be played - in my view he is a auto-selection.

We used to be consided dangerous because of our talls. Now we have the least talls in the entire league. Even the Bulldogs have more. And our talls are no longer feared. Riewoldt and Kosi don't hurt teams. Our strength was having Gehrig up forward who could kick accurately.

Who can kick in our current team?

Goddard obviously - possibly the best kick in the AFL, then Dal Santo and Montagna who both can kick long or short, and Sam Fisher who seems such a beautiful kick, but he rarely goes long.

Gram, King, Dempster, and Hayes all seem to be able to kick long kicks but not with the accuracy to kick to a man - the sort of accuracy we need unless we're kicking at goal.

Ball, Harvey, Milne specialise in short kicks and wouldn't kick 50m more than 5 times a year.

Schneider should be a good kick, he shows glimpses of it with a crisp, clean strike, but all too often he is pressured into rushing it and the result is uninspiring.

We need a reliable forward or two. Ones that can kick. Releasing our talls to a more supply oriented role.

The first time I read the list I thought it was a bit harsh. But then I read it again and if we are being critical it actually looks spot on. Some players can certainly move brackets in the last 10 rounds though.

In relation to kicking, that's where Armo and Birss are important. One of our biggest issues is the skills, which were maybe hidden a little in previous years when Hamill, Gehrig, Riewoldt and Koschitzke have fired up front and continual delivery from the mids.

Milne is an automatic selection. Leading our goal kicking and in the best three small forwards in the league over the past five years.

He has his flaws but is clearly in St Kilda's best 22.

The way I think about it, I consider how we would go if the particuar player could not play.
Max Hudgton , Sam Fisher , Lenny Hayes - oh no!.
Milne , we can probably put someone else there, shuffle things around and we may even go better. He is best 22 but he is not essential.
( Off topic but come to think of it there are not many games when he is not playing ).
I thought that Harvey was almost at the stage where he was not essential, but I missed him too much at the Bulldogs game.

It seems to me that many players don't have confidence in other players who can't kick accurately. By accurately - I mean passes to advantage of the target player. Look at the supply coming in to Riewoldt. Milne is the worst culprit - his passes sometimes look fair but what he seems to lack is distance "touch" - they go short or over the target distance, they're usually straight enough but useless to Roo if he is immediately tackled or put under pressure. Milne isn't the only one - just too many of the final passes to our forwards are at their feet or even worse.

Having seen the Goddard article which included a comment about the 7 Gippsland boys, I wondered whether there was any theme with recruiting i.e. that becuase of our lack of resources we had focussed on certain areas (other clubs supposedly found it amusing that Bevo would drive interstate instead of flying).

I previously heard that Bevo had kept an eye on Gram, even though he went to Brisbane.

So excluding Kosi & Roo (standout picks), Gehrig & Gardi (targeted trades from another club), Fiora (limited option trade), and Schneider & King (put up for "sale"), we have Gippsland (7), Metro Melbourne (12), Geelong (4), and Country Vic (5).

It seems we have got very few from interstate outside of this and wonder whether this is symbolic of concerns regarding drafting. The others are : Jones, Miles (WA), Sam Fisher (SA), Hayes, Haretuku (NSW), R & X Clarke (NT), and Armitage, Howard, Gilbert (Qld).

Is that enough given interstate teams have dominated the ladder in recent years? Almost all of the interstate guys have come only in the last 2 years.
