Analyzing ins and outs so far and this is how it looks (not including cut rookies)

IN:
Scott Stevens (KPP)
Hayden Skipworth (Midfielder)
Fergus Watts (KPP)
Josh Krueger (KPP)
Ben Hudson (Ruckman)

OUT:
Mark Bickley (Midfielder)
Andrew Crowell (Utility)
Ben Nelson (Midfielder)
Matthew Smith (KPP)
Daniel Schell (KPP)
*cough* Ben Marsh *cough* (Ruckman)

Bottom line: We brought in 4 bigs and 1 small for 2 smalls, 2 bigs and a medium.

If we go for another tall in the pre-season draft I feel we would not have a good balance of our list.

I heard on Ch10 that we are looking to rookie list more talls. Surely we would look for a bit of variety.

Scott Stevens (KPP)

I see Stevens more of a flanker than a KPP. He is reasonably tall but plays more like a Welsh than a Mark Stevens. (And no Welsh isn't a kpp no matter how many times he lines up at FF).

He plays as a flanker because he is as skinny as. Put 10kg on him and he isn't a flanker anymore. We recruited him as a KPP and with a good weights program he should fill out to play as a KPP.

I agree that Welsh is not a KPP. I never saw him as one. To me he is just a very good medium forward who can play in the midfield.

Welsh is 188cm.

Stevens is 192cm and a reasonable overhead mark. He'll be a KPP.

Clarke, Carey, Smart and Burns would be a big chunk of the side leaving at the same time. If Clarke retires at the end of 2004 we are left with 2 ruckman.

well all I say is these guys better retire properly - especially Smarty - I am still dirty on D Jarman - he deserved more and we deserved a chance to say goodbye properly. He didn't announce it until after the final v Carlton and he didn't even get chaired off after that game - cause he didn't tell the players either. Bicks broke my heart - but I got to cheer him off through my tears at the GABBA.

I am talking of the way he plays more than his size. Young skinny future key position players tend to play like young key position players.

Stevens plays like a younger (not much) Chad Cornes, and will more than likely remain a 3rd option forward or back, and never become a KPP, much like Cornes. Tall utility is not a key position player.

Cornes is meant to be a KPP. He takes enough marks and plays the role enough to qualify as one. Just kicks way too few goals.

MarksGirl really shouldn't have shed tears about Bicks retiring...I mean geez, it's not like he was hard done by in his career or as if he'll ever be hard up for cash.

Did anyone else hear Bicks the other day on 5AA??

When it was put to him that some doubting Thomases have the Crows sliding down the ladder next year, he said that he couldn't agree with that.

He pointed out that people appear to be judging our season 2004 on the games after round 19 this year, at which stage we were lying second.

When he was asked where he thought the Crows would end up at the end of the year - minor round I presumed - Bicks thought we should at least end up somewhere between 4th to 6th.

He doesn't plan to have any footy involvement in 2004 other than to come to the Crows games and cheer the boys on.

Mark Bickley is a legend of the AFC. It was an end of an era - and I know for fact I wasn't the only one who shed tears that night. I know many who did.

I heard Bicks and he predicted anywhere between 3rd and 6th. I agree with everything he said. People point out how we slipped from 4th in 2002 to 5th in 2003 with all these new recruits. What they don't realise is that if we had the sort of injuries in 2002 like we did in 2003, we would be nowhere near top 4. We had a very good run with injuries in 2002. Apart from Welsh missing 10 games with OP we didn't have any major injuries. This year we were belted from pilar to post in the 1st half of the season. We practically didn't have Stevens, Goodwin, Burton, Welsh, Carey and a few others for more than 5 weeks (at least) by the time they came back they had nowhere near enough footy to challenge for a flag.

Hopefully with noneventful preseason (as far as injuries are concerned) and a good start of the season we will be right up there in 2004.

If we can be 6-5 at half way mark of the season and we have a decent run with injuries, we will be top 4 again and much better prepared for the finals.

At halfway mark of season

Ben Hudson 8 games 160 hit-outs 68 marks 14 goals
Ben Rutten 10 games 8 hit-outs 75 marks 39 goals

I agree that S Stevens is similar to C Cornes. He plays more as a leading type forward than a pack marking forward (say like a Tredrea). However, he is more than capable (like C Cornes) of holding down a KP or playing as a 3rd tall. He is only young still, so he should be able to bulk up a bit over the pre-season.

ahhhhhh please don't mention Mr Reco and Scott Stevens in the same sentence. You scare me!

Fitzgerald could have been good if he had some muscle on him and friendly knees.

don't forget decent shoulders. some people are just not built for AFL - sadly I think Ryan may be one of those.
