Watching him tonight Im more convinced than ever its time for M. Lloyd to make a decision. The only time he could get a kick was when he pushed deep in defence and up forward he really offered nothing. Sure the forward line was often clogged but he doesnt crash packs to create opportunities for crumbers any more and his confidence appears to be at an all time low. I think he has 2 options- 1) Chuck in the captaincy and refocus on being the best full forward in the comp
2) Retire still on top and be remembered as a modern day great of the Essendon footy club. The injury still is obviously not right and at 30 years old what does Lloydy have to achieve apart from 1000 career goals???
He has been a great of the Essendon footy club and I hate to see him struggling like he is, after remembering how dominant he was a couple of years back.

I totally agree, it has now become embarassing!

he actually cost us the game tonight. He gave away a crucial 50 metre penalty late in the 3rd quarter, crows get the goal and the lead which we never got back!

He has played below par in the last couple of weeks. The match against Port he kicked 5 but we got smashed and he only seems to kick the easy goals from the square. He hasn't solidified his position on the ground. Is he FF or HF and I saw him in defence tonight. He goes to ground far too easily and not sure if he will ever be back to his best.

It's quite simple for Lloyd keep your feet and you remain competitive, too often he goes to ground after a contest and i am not just referring to tonight. As soon as you loose your feet your team is down a player, you are still in the play when you keep your feet whether it be a block for another team mate, defensive zoning or possibly ending up with the footy.

On a side note plenty of positives to draw from tonight. Great to have something to cheer.

Couldnt agree more.
Lloyd was a superstar.
Always went in hard, took great grabs and kicked the goals..
was the perfect role model for the up and coming stars at Essendon.

The last couple of years he has seemed to slow down quite a bit..
obviously a few injuries here and there doesnt help (anyone).

Maybe stick him on the wing like they did with Richo,
perhaps full forward isnt his spot anymore..

Maybe that just wont work either :(

COME ON LLOYDY!!! :thumbsu:

As much as I love him... That 50m penalty he gave away in the 3rd was completely inexusable. The captain of your team should have more awareness than to make a rookie error like that.

Well he really needs to stay at FF but I'm glad McPhee kicked goals tonight because we do have other options if he isn't pulling his weight.

His form is inconsistent. One week he will play a great game, the next a bad game. We have a young team and I think he needs to stay around to help this team mature.

Honestly guys...

Was the game suited for big forwards tonight? No.
Did Lloyd and Lucas at the minimum take Adelaide's two best defenders? Yes.
Did Rutten and Bock have an impact on the game? Minimal.

Stop sprouting this "goes to ground too easy" crud...EVERYONE was going to ground too easy tonight...it was SLIPPERY.

What about last week? Held his feet in every contest, kicked 4 goals - do we have such short memories?

Your second post about the Bombers since you joined. FO.

that 50m penalty he gave away just emphasised where he is at, it was atotally dumb decision at such a crucial time in the game, what makes it worse he acts like he has done nothing wrong!!

i think it is time for him to take stock and see that standing in the goal square for three quarters of the game with his hands on his hips is not the way a captain should be situated on the field, i would sugggest that the dons need someone who plays regulary between half fwd and half back as captain so when time get tough can stand up and show the way

lloydy as good player is is ineffective as a captain from the goal square

Before the ANZAC day game started I asked my father, "Would you trade Lloyd at the end of this year?"

He replied that he had never given it any thought. By the end of the game he observed that other teams might not actually want him given the current state of the game and the way it is played.

We were just both thinking aloud and I would never seriously consider trading the great man, but it is true that forwards need so much more areobic fitness and a wider skill-set than they used to.

With Lloyd struggling to retun to full fitness and mobility, and the game having changed around him, and the delivery not being what it used to be, and the young team needing clear leadership in the middle during the centre bounces and the transitions from backline to forwardline, I do feel that it is time for Lloyd to relinquish the captaincy. He has been a wonderful servant of the team and this would be yet another good service at the present time.

There is still a great deal of footy left in those talented legs. He is still a strong influence off the field and is a hit with sponsors and the media. It seems to me that it is time for him to hand over to Mark McVeigh (who will respond well to the added responsibility) and to play the role of club statesman, helping out wherever he is needed and on-field becoming a role-player without any shame.

The timing is right and nobody would think any less of him for taking such a hard decision out of the hand of the coach. Indeed, if he did, he would be immortalised in my view. Few people are prepared to give up personal honours for the good of the team. This is his chance.

Slippery footy, poor delivery, Rutten and Bock.

That is all.

very close to the mark simply wasnt matty's night, but the time to throw in the captaincy may be coming.. it;s pretty hard to lift a side from the forward line and it might free him up and give a bloke like Mcveigh a chance to lead the younger guys threw the packs.

How far back does your memory go? I went to the Carlton game and sat there with my family both Carlton and Essendon and we all made the observation he goes to ground far too easily, not just tonight. We are not talking about players slipping over we are talking about a player that for whatever reason decides at the critical moment to go to ground. Like i said in an earlier post once you go to ground you are effectively out of the contest. If you keep your feet you can achieve the 1%ers that do the team things. It's a simple thing and if he does it less in the future i will certainly get off his back but it hasn't changed all year. Those massive tree trunks need to grow some roots.

Lloyd is a great full forward and thats it, FFS he is the worst captain the Dons have ever had, he just has to stay in the 50mt arc, if he leaves it hit him with a stun gun. Who really give a shit about how many kicks he gets he has only one job and that is to kick goals, some weeks good some weeks bad.

Just trying to remember a time when I could honestly say our worst two players on the ground were Lloyd and Lucas.

It sounds ____ing absurd.

They got thrashed tonight - but so did anyone over six three at the other end. Not a big forward's night.
Agree that Lloyd has not been good this year, and I've been having similar thoughts - but he's a champion of the club, and we should at least give him until the end of the year.

Not sure about sending him packing just yet.
He is not the player he was but he is still a 50 goal full forward. What they do need to question is if he is the right choice to lead the club on the field.
His off field role as captain has been first class but maybe the pressure of being captain and the combination of getting older and injuries is having too much effect.
At this stage of his career i suspect he needs to give away the captancy and concentrate solely on getting his on field form back to a more consistant level.
