Lock it in, Eddy...

(Okay, yes, I stole that line from somebody, but it just seemed like the perfect title for this thread...)

I was really happy with his game yesterday, especially that burst in the last quarter. Two goals, a fair bit of forward pressure. I thought he did an excellent job of doing what Gwilt was in there for - that tallish defensive forward, Hamill-like player (it's funny, sometimes he looks SOO much like Sammy!).

What did others think of his game? Will he continue to play for the rest of the season in such a role? Since he only came in for Schneids, and Schneids is a shoe-in to come back in (no injury, just the birth of his child), who goes out?

hmm not sure, still prefer Schnieds. He did at one stage drop a basic mark that turned over for a goal, but i do like him in the forward line.

Between he and mini, we are scoring some valuable goals from what are essentially defensive-forwards. I think there is a spot there for 1 of them in the FP....prefer schneider to Eddy however. (that dropped mark/rebound goal really irked me...just a lack of concentration).

He's one of my favourites, but can put in a real blooper. He's much better overhead than that effort yesterday. Also has a problem with how he kicks the ball, which results in him being smothered more than most.

I'd have him just outside the best 22, but he's almost the next one picked. Having that extra runner/tackler probably helps to take a load off some of the more elite mids, and he seems to stick the tackles (one of our strengths this year - the Eagles slipped through a few yesterday).

Was that his 3rd game for the year? Might need a little time to get back into the swing of things. Probably a tough week to come back in with the team generally down too.

There's no question that he's ahead of Schneids. But my point is I don't think he's playing the same role as Schneids. Schneids is the second small forward, to go with Milne.

Basically, our forward line is meant to be, as I understand it:

Two talls
: Roo and Kosi (with the odd ruckman popping down briefly when those two have a rest, or to stretch the backline a bit height wise).
Two attacking smalls: Milne and Schneider (with the occassional midfielder popping forward, while Milne and Schneids rest or float to the midfield, just for a bit of variety)
One defensive small: McQualter
One defensive mid-tall: This was Gwilt, but then when he got dropped, it was left empty, we did not play as well as we would like - I wanted Goose in that role, but now Eddy has come into it.

Just out of interest, how many tackles - especially inside-50m tackles - did Eddy make on Sunday?

Big fan of eddy. Good runner, goes in hard, great tackler and puts good pressure on the opposition.Needs a couple more games in the side tho to find some touch. He was doing super well before that maggot ran into him in the nab cup so in my mind if that didn't occur he would have been playing in the side since round 1.

Like I said on the Raph Clarke thread, I don't think Eddy is in our best 22 at this stage.

I think both McQualter and Schneider offer more in that defensive small forward role. Eddy probably matches those guys in terms of work rate, tackling etc but isn't quite as polished with his disposal skills. McQualter keeps continuing to impress and Schneider is a proven premiership player, so neither deserve to be dropped.

Bring in King, Schneider and Hudghton for McEvoy, Eddy and Raph Clarke and I think we pretty much have our best 22.

Pro-Stats (which looks at stats a little differently, particularly tackles and 1%'ers) had Eddy the "Lock" as 7 tackles, 4 1%'ers and 2 inside-50s, but only one contested possession. From my viewing of the game, most of his tackles would have been in the centre/wing as he pushed up the ground most of the time (until the last quarter).

Looking at pro-stats, they give extra detail if you select it:

I've selected averages this year:

Code:
Schneids/Eddy
5.1 Tackles 4.7
3.3 Eff Tackles 1.3
64.8 % Effective Tackles 28.6
1.9 Cont Poss 1.3
4.5 Ball Get 4.7

Am quite concerned that he ihas OP again, and is not playing much game thime these days. this will surely affct the team during finals!

Unless to keep them fresh there is a rotation organised to give him and maybe other players some easier duties, which may be the case, but if not then he is being given light duties for another reason.

Most likely - recent concussion, 2nd most likely - osteitis pubis management.

don't think he is ahead of Eddy, although both can suffer concentration lapses (recall against Geelong dropping a sitter at half forward for a turnover).

How good was mcqualter last game, he was quite a high draft pick and I think he's starting to pay off. I like Eddy too but im still confused why he got a shot in front of Gwilt who was better than him when omitted. lol i want Gwilt back in the side.

Really liked Mini's game on the weekend.

Is playing the defensive forward role very well.

Can't believe one post had Eddy ahead of Schneider.
Definitely not in best 22, makes too many basic errors at the worst time.
Sundays dropped mark started a run on of three goals that nearly cost us the game. Was another instance in finals last year.
Sloppy skills all round although apparently has good motor but we have gone past that stage of picking athletes.
Jury definitely still out.

I dont think we should judge players on games at Subi. We play there once a year and it's rarely a true indication.

Look at MG's game at Subi last year. It was shocking, he was dropped for the rest of the year and we all thought his retirement was imminent...

How (gratefully) wrong we were.

He tries hard, but his skills are nowhere near it. In the fourth quarter under no pressure he couldn't hit a man 30m away who was at least 5m clear of his opponent and missed him by about 10 metres. It's the one thing holding him back but unfortunately it's a very important thing.

Also has a problem with how he kicks the ball, which results in him being smothered more than most.

He is going to have to do a lot of work on his kicking if he wants to stay in the 22 - has to stop letting go with 2 hands!!! I've no idea why the club hasn't changed his technique yet. Should be an easy transition for a little fella.

That shot on the run from 48 was never a chance by the time the ball got to his boot.
