To be fair to Obst that tournament is a massive grind; a couple of days in your head is scrambled, let alone the 7th day, and mistakes are made. Having said that he should be used to playing those long hours. Or maybe he just isn't that good. He was hammered in commentary by Ray Dehkharghani, who is this middle-aged high stakes mixed games crusher, in the final table of the 10k HORSE where Obst lost to Jason Mercier. Ray D had earlier defeated Mercier HU for a razz bracelet, which eventually meant Mercier lost his prop bet with Vanessa Selbst, Ray D also made the FT of the 50k Players Championship so he has pedigree.

Well he's a lot better than I am, like I said probably the best Australian player just given his record. On these forums everyone criticises AFL football players for being rubbish or whatever, but the fact of the matter is if we were to play football against these "bad" AFL players they would trounce us, however if we couldn't criticise them these forums wouldn't exist. Any criticism I have of Obst is like that - its not personal; being the best poker player in Australia is sort of like being the best boxer in the country. Like if Anthony Mundine at the peak of his powers was to go over and fight the 10th best boxer in his weight division in the USA he'd probably get pounded.

Of the 4 or so hands where Obst featured in the WSOP footage this year he makes a really good raise on the turn with JJ to get two better hands to fold, makes a poor decision with Q5, makes a sick laydown with a full house vs a straight flush, and makes a pretty bad, verging on awful, fold with a flush late in the tournament. So a mixed bag. Then if you watch the footage in the HORSE event it seems he makes a lot of pretty basic mistakes repeatedly. It sort of gives you hope when you realise he's playing high stakes and can afford to play $50k buy ins.

Would you class Lisandro as an Aussie? Certainly better than Obst IMO

How about Martin Kozlov? In your opinion who would you rate as the better player between these 2?

Its really hard to say because I've never seen Lisandro play - but he's an old schooler - he hasn't really had any results in recent years though that could just be down to variance.

Kozlov I saw win the 6 max event at the WSOP this year - that was a stacked final table, though its true he ran really well. He's probably a NLH/PLO specialist, not an all-rounder like Lisandro or Obst. If we're talking about specialists Mathew Wakeman is probably the best NLH player in the country, he seems to fall out of bed and boom! Another 5 figure score. Having said that he's posted some advice on the forums at 2plus2 and got hammered for his tips by the more accomplished players on there so who knows.

There's no real culture of poker in this country, then you have the fact we only have a small population compared to the USA and Europe. 90% of Australian players online I find are the fishiest of the fish; abysmally bad, that's probably because most players contact with poker is pub poker. Not exactly the best place to learn some of the intracicies of the game.

Hasn't Obst made the FT of the 50K too? (Sorry, missed this part when asking other questions)

But agree that fold of his flush was super weird. He did explain on Twitter his process though after the episode aired though....

He got super lucky with the set over set vs Josephy, but he played ok i thought. Bit too nitty, especially heads up. Nguyen put super pressure on all the way though. Woulda been tough. Whilst 2nd place misses the bracelet, the 4.5 Mil would be a decent chunk of change to take away the pain

he got super lucky a few times, Ruzicka practically gave him chips. plus im pretty sure he had quite a few big hand v's bigger hand pots late on day 7 to get there in the first place.

yet somehow he managed to check and fold his way to heads up so you gotta give him props for sticking to his strategy, but if that was me i'd be kicking myself for not at least trying to win. surely he's got to be asking himself what if?

was some of the worst poker i've seen i reckon but $4.5 mill says it cant have been that bad.

I don't think it was the worst strategy. The pay jumps from 9th-5th weren't huge. But top 4 paid handsomely (i wouldn't sneeze at any cash in the ME, but i'm the hackiest of poker hacks)

I think he was patient (and it worked as he hit monsters and got paid by a bluff when he had a set as you said, plus set over set)

I think the only thing i would criticize (and i understand the irony with me not being good at all) is that he needed to adapt his strategy HU vs Nguyen. They both played identical to how they did all FT..... Vayo needed to open up more and put the pressure back on Nguyen. Surely he knew the betting patterns from Nguyen thanks to the delay and his rail informing him? Marchese i would assume would've been all over it.

But Vayo got HU, went card dead for a bit and never really recovered due to playing too nitty. Folded a lot of 2nd pairs etc

Yeah, he was no where near as boisterous. Very similar voice to Gross, so i could hardly tell who was speaking at any given time unless Gross was plugging his Twitch stream or Keating was plugging his Snapchat
