What an effort! Against what many would consider the best midfield in the comp.

He IS our inside, tough as nails midfielder. I thought we needed to find one, but he's it.

Great pickup, and will be more than solid for us in the years to come.

Lower, Mundy, Barlow, Fyfe, Hill, Morabito :thumbsu:

Yep - Game high 11 clearances i think, pity about the collision with daisy though, we'll be missing him next week i reckon.

He might be having a holiday for that square up on Thomas last night. I agree, he's an inside midfielder, otherwise he a fringe player. Good to see he's finally being played in his natural position.

I said somewhere before the game that if 2 of Lower/Palmer/De boer can develop as quality inside mids for us we'll have a more than adequate clearance machine in the middle, Palmer looks cooked, Lower looks like he can definitely fill one of those roles so hopefully Matty D fills the final piece of the puzzle next year.

Not forgetting Sandilands is also one of the best clearance players in the league, it shoudn't be an area we are caught lacking in next year and beyond.

To think we've had a natural inside midfielder sitting there all season but we've been playing him out on the flanks (or even dropping him occasionally) while we've had our lumbering CHF playing midfield all year.

one of the big positives this year. can not believe they have dropped him at all this year given the year he has had, although his game against the blues was bloody ordinary, but who's wasnt?

need more lower to get higher i say

Hey Esti. Round 1 2011

Lower has it on a string

With him doing well, wtf is the point of keeping Pav in the midfield?

Such a waste of a good key forward.

Easily the most frustrating thing this season has been watching the coaches expect the same group of players getting it done and not backing others in. We've seen some players really emerge this season, but part of me wonders whether if it were not for injuries we'd have seen them at all.

Lower was really good last night. Not only was it his possessions, but he looked like a leader out there. The game got really difficult in the second and early third quarter for Freo, and he didn't give up. Kept playing as if we were only a few points behind. That's what you want to see.

His combination with the rucks was a highlight.

Liked him from the get go. Honest, hard player. The kind of guy you'd put around your stars to build a proper team - perhaps even more next year if he keeps improving. Definitely not one of the guys that's been frustrating me week in week out with shitful contests.

The sort of bloke that if he was the 16th player picked would look like a superstar. That was probably why we picked him, unfortunately he's been elevated somewhat in the importance stakes and has had to take on a lot more responsibility. And he's been pretty good given that.

Had to.

Love his ferocity and toughness as well. Was great to see him give it back to Daisy last night (although that being said, he'll probably get rubbed out for it")

Despite the disappointment of 2011, the thought of a fully fit, healthy 2012 midfield with Mundy, Barlow, Fyfe, Lower, Mzungu, Hill, Morabito and even Broughton is actually pretty exciting.

Palmer returning half the player he was has been offset by the acquisition of Lower.

Hope he only gets a week, I hate going into new seasons with suspended players.

i reckon he'll get two weeks for intentional, but not much more as thomas was OK and they go by the medicos these days at the tribunal.

Harvey said he will be having surgery once the season ends, I forget whether it was hip or shoulder. Could be part of the reason that he wasn't always used in the middle. I am not suggesting that the coaches are blameless but we as supporters don't really know what is going on behind the scenes.

the fact that matt deboer said he looks up to nick lower the most because he is the hardest person he has ever come across also speaks volumes IMO, on top of the fact that he has kicked 3 game winning goals this year. he must be very well respected amongst the playing group

I loved Nick Lower's game last night.

His brother Ed exhibits all the same hardness at the ball. He too is a true inside mid despite also being played elsewhere prior to 2010. Since then he has broken his leg and collarbone last season and been out most of this year with a knee. Whilst he's been injured Zeibell, Greenwood and Swallow have established themselves in the inside mid roles. I fear Ed may be traded/delisted at the end of the year. Would Freo be interested in another Lower and what would you be prepared to trade for him? North need more run in the form of an outside mid or a 'run and carry' HBF.

Can't be that bad surely? Didn't stop him throwing his weight around like a man possessed last night.

The use of Lower has been one of the more frustrating things for me this season. All the Port supporters were adamant that's he's a natural midfielder and that Choco ruined him playing him HBF. Then he goes back to the SANFL and dominates in the middle.

We draft him on the back of those performances and then what do we do? Barely give him any full games in the guts while Harves constantly tells us he has to play Pav there because of all our missing personnel.

Harves seems to have something against playing natural midfielders as midfielders (Palmer the other obvious one). Versatility is nice and all but FFS lets start playing guys in the positions they're most suited in.

i will always love players like nick lower playing for freo so if ed is the same id be happy to have him, however i dont think we would trade for him as we need to look at other positions first. be happy to take petrie off your hands though ;)

Yeah a good pick up. Will never be a superstar but will replace Mcphee and Crowley and do a much better job than either. Strong and great in the contest which is something we need desperately just needs to work on his consistency a bit.
