In 2008 Cook played three matches for Vic Country in the NAB AFL Under – 16 Championships, averaging 13 disposals, three marks, and 4 inside 50’s, and also 5 matches for North Ballarat in the TAC Cup. He backed this up to play 15 games as a lead up key forward, scoring 14 goals at an accuracy of 64%. He also tallied 23 score assists – ranked equal 9th in the competition. AFL Prospectus

An exceptional first game of the championships, in which he kicked five goals against Vic Metro, including three in three minutes in the second quarter, stamped him as a key forward prospect. He leads well, can take a pack mark, and is capable of scooping the ball off the deck. Intensity has been a question, but maybe not now that’s he growing more confident. Paul Daffey

The key forward impressed for Vic Country in the Under 18 championships and has taken his game to a new level in the TAC Cup. He is a mobile forward with a good leap and clean pair of hands. He presents well to the ball carrier and his set shot kicking is technically sound. Cook will need to have a big finals series for his team to progress. TAC Cup website

In his own words

What type of player are you?
A mobile tall forward with the versatility to go back or play on a wing.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Brent Staker. Someone who is versatile but can play up forward or back depending on the team’s needs and structure.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
I can read the play well and can play a variety of positions. Also marking and kicking at goals.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
I need to improve my strength so that I can have more influence in a marking contest.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Western Bulldogs. My dad has barracked for them ever since his older brother played for them. I followed him.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My parents and brother have always supported me and come to games. They had the belief that I can do whatever I wanted to do, and football is no exception. They also sent me to boarding school to improve my football.

Cook will surely be an early first round pick.
He is a utility and special kids like him don't come round too often.
Has had many impressive games this year for the Rebels, and also played a game in the VFL for the Roosters and kicked a few goals.
Played for Vic Country on the weekend kicked 5 goals against Vic Metro, got second best, also took 5 contested grabs, and racked up 20 disposals.
The AIS graduate has a bright future ahead of him.

What Makes him Special Mate?

how do you guys think he compares with jack darling? is there any chance he will go ahead of darling at this early stage? darling has been quiet in the under 18s, despite all the hype about him...

Cook & Solly >>> Darling at the moment.

All three are agile big men who get a lot of the ball around the ground. As KPP's though Cook & Solly are ahead of Darling. For the record - Cook/Solly are about 194cm's, Darling 190cm's. Solly/Darling have bigger bodies, whilst Cook is still skinny.

does anyone rate 2 teammates of Cook's at the rebels, callum currie and tyrone ross do you think they will get taken in the draft? if so where

How did you rate his championships in 2010 as a whole, his last game against SA in a big game, he seemed very quiet?

He had a great championship campaign, he started off with a bang from what i can remember with a 5 goal, best on ground performence against vic metro, including 3 goals in 3 minutes. Had a lot of good games, was the co-captain of vic country, but yes he did wore on as the championships did. The game against SA he played well in patches, including great pressure in the forward line, unselfish when he had the footy looking to set team mates up, and his greatest stregth as a tall forward are his hands in the air and bellow his knees. you also have to take into account the game against SA was as wet as a shag which never compliments a tall bloke.
Topped off the championships winning the title obviously and an all australian spot at CHF

watching his under 18 footy the other week hard to see why he went so high he looked a flanker in a big body,, how long did he stay on the list 2 years ? then gone shows how bad he was in a dees time of need

Was he a victim of the previous regime? I would think that if he was under Roos he could've developed into a good player
Don't know about that, was picked way too high (pick 12), 2 years and then delisted. No other club decided to pick him up, if talent was there as a key forward` why did no other club decide to give him a chance? has been playing VFL since and has struggled to have any impact as a key forward at that level. Has moved into defence this year where he seems to have improved. I remember reading an article on him when we drafted him and it was saying they don't believe he has the tools to be a key forward but is more suited as a 3rd defender, not strong enough to beat opponents one on one up forward or down back, struggles to take marks, but can get his hands to a contest which is why he would be best suited as a 3rd man up defender. As he as shown at VFL level he is better suited in a defender role.

Probably not played in the right position as a junior and then poor work from our recruiters to not realise his strengths and weaknesses.
