By the same token - the Tiges give away a lot of professional frees to stop the flow and allow their numbers back.

Plenty say its because he doesn't believe in the ruck but I just think he doesn't feel he has the adequate rucks on the list. He played Martin whenever he was fit and played Sweet for a bit. If he actually had an AFL standard ruck or two to choose from like every other team then no doubt we wouldn't have this issue imo.

Martin's injury has been the issue. He doesn't trust Jordan Sweet to do a better job than Young at this stage.

I never understood the scrutiny that certain coaches like Beveridge get. It is really hard to win the flag, and to have a coach that can consistently get a team into finals is a godsend.

The grand final winning thing never makes sense to me, but I thought this was the criticism that people have? Making the finals twice since winning in 2016 and losing both Elimination Finals with the great list they have has been the issue.

Now, I rate him as a coach, but I would say that getting your team to the finals is one thing, being competitive once there is another.

Regardless, a few injuries go their way this year and the Dogs are probably favourites this week against any opposition.

Bevo as a battling player cared more for the coiffure than the getting the ball and doing summit withit.

The last game he played for the Dogs in the ruck was GWS at the end of the season in 2019 and he played a good game. Then he was dropped for English, who proceeded to get toweled up by Mumford in the elimination final two weeks later.

A semi-final appearance should've been a pass mark in 2019/20 for sure.

Our list in 2017/18 was not great, it was transition period to develop our core and make up for the loss of key players through form and retirement. Call it a diet re-build if you must.

That being said, the pressure is rightly on Bevo now that he finally has a list that can play the way he wants so it's reasonable to expect him to deliver.

Pretty much what CarnTheScray said. It's not a matter of not rating the position, but rather the fact he doesn't rate the players we have at our disposal. We've been chasing Martin for years, and once he finally joined us he played every week he was fit. The same will apply assuming we can get someone of reasonable quality this offseason. If Sweet showed more around the ground and had a better tank, he'd be playing. I still hope he can develop into that type of player, but right now he's basically another Tom Campbell who we delisted thanks to him not doing enough outside of winning taps.

He normally plays two rucks when he can. We're going all-out for a mature ruck this year if rumours are to be believed.
English just hasn't progressed as a first ruck as much as we woudl have liked. Personally I think he's and excellent forward/ruck (R2) and should go all out on a genuine first ruck.

I genuinely struggle to believe Bevo wanted Trengove at all given his selection history, but surely he must've had significant input in the decision to get him. It seems the most important trait he wants in a ruckman is the ability to link up around the ground and use the ball well, and as a former ruck myself I hate it. Imo people tend to undervalue rucks because in general an average ruck can more or less neutralise a good one if that's their intent, but its pretty much the only position on the ground where you get stuck in a one on one matchup all day with no option of switching things up if its not going well. If you can't physically compete, it gets very ugly. You will almost never win a match because the tallest guy on your team gets 25 disposals instead of 15. We have quite frequently lost them because English gets mauled by the likes of Grundy to the point where our mids barely get a look in. We desperately need to get (and play) a ruckman who can ruck and leave the midfielding to the midfielders. And a 42 year old Stef Martin doesn't count, it's not exactly rocket surgery to realise he's unlikely to last a full season.

If that were true he wouldn't be playing Martin whenever he's fit. He wants one that is reliable. Trengove was prone to his brain fades.

and what? Lewis Young isn't? Lewis Young turns the ball over all the time.
Shane Mumford was prone to brain fades throughout his career. It didn't stop him from being a great ruckman, or smashing that twig English in the 2019 elimination final.

A ruckman needs to be strong and aggressive in the modern game; this description does not apply to English or Young, which is why you get smashed in the ruck every week, and sometimes it costs you matches. I fully expect Port to beat the Bulldogs comfortably this week, mainly on the basis that Beveridge won't change the rucks.

100%. Bevo keeps looking for the next Dean Cox. Killed Will Minson's career, gave Ayce Cordy some of the most undeserved starts in history and persisted with English until it cost us top 4

English was very competitive in the ruck on the weekend, finished with 22 hitouts, 4 clearances and importantly 7 tackles. Didn't have his usual marking impact around the ground but got his hands dirty at the stoppages.

How was the list great prior to this year? Bruce was an absolute potato last year, Naughty was injured and not ready, Keath was finding his feet in the team and has no support. Cody wasn’t in the team, English even less ready then he is now, guys like Dale & Williams still young and inconsistent. We had a great midfield right at the very start of their prime. Now we have a great list, and we’re in a prelim with a 3 week block the only time we played bad footy for more than 1 week

Yeah I mean results speak for themselves, do people remember where we were when Bevo took over? The club was a shambles under McCartney we just had our captain walk out and coach sacked, the fact that we played finals the following year was a testament to Bev, now people using it as another year we got bundled out straight away

The bloke has his faults, absolutely, I think he can be stubborn in regards to some of the ways he sees the game - for example the ruck. I do feel like he’s surrounded himself with yes men to a degree and I’d love him to be challenged every now and then but at the end of the day he’s one of what, 5? Current premiership coaches, has a 57% win rate after taking us over at rock bottom, and for all the talk about not being good in finals he has a 67% finals win rate. Can’t really complain
