He is a good player but iffy kicking. He has having a really good season until he did his shoulder in rd10 and then his form just dropped off.
Saints have too many like him, but if Carlton are looking for someone to help out Cripps then he would be a good fit.

Slow, can’t kick, doesn’t find the footy enough to minimalise those deficiencies

Would stay away from him like the plague. Still probably has value though, one of Carlton’s 2nds does seem right

Carlton would be silly to give up a second for him.

Really has zero elite qualities

Can win the ball inside ok, but not remotely what I would call a clearance mid.

Doesn’t find that much ball on the outside with 21/22 touches I think?

Average to poor ball use.

For comparison I would rather have ah Chee or young back on ports list than add dunstan. Forever slated to be a fringe player.

I wouldn't even waste a list spot on him. Can see why Carlton or Gold Coast would pick him up for some temporarily relief for a season or two but he just isn't a difference maker at AFL level at all.

When in good form he can be a handy inside mid good for 28 disposals and 6 clearances a game. Just hasn't been in form much other than a good patch late last year and early this year. Needs to build his tank and also stop having such a defensive mindset when he gets the footy. Our shocking development definitely hasn't done him any favours. In his third game as an 18 year old he registered 29 disposals, 2 goals, 5 tackles, 6 clearances and 2 Brownlow votes away in a loss to West Coast and we all thought he was the next Lenny Hayes but then our coaches got to him.

Checking the stats and he only got that “good form” stat line once this season.

So it’s a fair stretch to say he is good for it yeah.
Check the end of 17’. Was in ripping form then Richo decides to start him in the VFL this year, ruined all progression.

Really underrated IMO. Nice hands, good vision, strong in the contest. Saints have a few of his type which is probably why they’d be open to trading him.

I’d be happy to trade pick 25 and then do a few later pick upgrades to give the Saints the currency they need to bring Hannebery in.

Would comfortably get a game for Carlton. Poor disposal though in a team filled with player that already cant kick to save themselves. Bit of an Ed Curnow 2.0.

Not overly keen.

The thing that has really made a mess of his career is his shoulders.

Came flying out of the gates in his first year (Rising Star nom in game 1, 2 Brownlow votes in a losing team in game 3, etc), but then did his shoulder for the first time about half way through that season, and his form dropped off a bit after that (kept playing with it for several weeks, before a reco with about 5 rounds to go- still came 5th in the Rising Star), then the next year he really struggled, and hardly got to play inside, and we found out at the end of that year that his shoulder had been giving him heaps of grief all year.

Finally started to get back like his old self about halfway through his next (3rd) year, but then did his other shoulder, and that too needed a reco, and another several months on the sidelines.

Battled away for the first 2/3 of the following season and got dropped 3 times, before crediting a bunch of therapy and so-on for helping him rediscover his best form, and in the last 6 weeks he played the sort of footy he always looked capable of playing, averaging 28 disposals, 6 clearances and almost a goal a game, and got the most votes in our B&F for that 6 week stretch.

Then in our wisdom, after looking good again in our preseason outings, we started him in the VFL this year, before bringing him back in, and he again played some very good footy.

But then he copped another big knock on one of his shoulders and after that his form really dropped off again, and he finished the year in the VFL.

Had it not been for all these shoulder issues I fully expect that he'd be very well established by now and playing consistently good footy, in spite of his obvious weaknesses, because he also just has natural football ability.

Like he showed in the juniors, pre-shoulder injury in his first year, and then from late last year to the latest shoulder issue this year.

He's definitely someone I can see benefiting Carlton and Cripps, as long as he's able to get an injury-free run at it.

He's also a real heart-and-soul type, who will bleed for his team and has long been highly regarded for his leadership skills (including captaining SA to their champs win in 2012).

He could still have a good career, especially if he keeps improving his tank, but he needs his shoulders to play ball, or it could slip away pretty quickly.

Thanks for the info. Usually when supporters try to pawn their players off there’s some underlying reason why the player isn’t needed, but it sounds like it’d be a pretty mutual trade for both parties. Would also help St Kilda get Hannebery.

Also don’t think a 2nd rounder (with change coming back) is too much to pay. Historically 2nd round picks are hit and miss, and we are desperate for AFL-ready inside ball-winners to help Cripps out, and also allow him to go forward.

No worries, yeah it would definitely be a risk for us to trade him, as he showed when he finally got a good injury free run at it for 18 months (and got his first full preseason under his belt), that he could play even B&F-winning standard footy- once he got his mojo back- but we do just have too many who are too similar in our midfield and really need the leadership and experience of a Hannebery type, so something will have to give if we get him, and that may be Luke.

The funny thing is, Hannebery kept getting games with Sydney, while Dunstan got dropped by us in the end, even though their numbers looked like this this year:

Just goes to show how much Dan struggled this year and how much we're banking in getting him back to full fitness, and it also says something about Sydney's midfield depth, that Dan kept getting a game, while even we dropped the better performing Dunstan!
