Re: Luke Mitchell

Disappointment spurs teenager
"It was disappointing," said Mitchell, "because you feel for a few minutes like you might not be good enough, like they've seen something in you they don't like. But at the same time, it was only ever going to be a bonus if they did decide to take me.

"I tried not to get my hopes up beforehand, and when it didn't happen I tried to think like it was a positive thing to get that close. It was good that they at least wanted me there, and they gave me a good list of things I had to work on. When you looked at it that way, it wasn't a bad week, it got me a bit closer to the AFL just by knowing what I had to improve. I was feeling pretty good at the start of the year, this year, because I had all these things I knew I had to get better at."

"His running patterns in the forward line still need work but he's a great kick, a great mark and he's a real pest to the opposition with the blocking he does," said Allison. "He has a lot of improvement in him."

Impressive attitude.

The last KPF we drafted with a shoulder injury turned out alright.

Mitchell's hard road to draft day
"We focused on a lot of speed and power along with the technique of running. I just tried to put the best people around me and that worked really well," Mitchell said.

"It was pretty tough at stages, but I had a few goals in place that we'd set up and I was pretty adamant that was going to reach them. It took a lot of time, but I didn't really lose much concentration throughout the process."

Mitchell worked extensively with Stawell Gift winner Adrian Mott among others and impressed Cannons regional manager Ian Kyte with his attitude throughout.

"I know [Cannons coach] Martin Allison gave him some tapes of Nick Riewoldt last year and he became very good in that type of role," he said.

"He's a fantastic build now for an 18-year-old lad, but you might find he'll go to an AFL club and be stronger, but lighter. I think he's going to be more of a running, leading forward who gets up the ground like Riewoldt than a pack-smashing power forward like Brown."

Re: Luke Mitchell

Selection #26 (WEST COAST PRIORITY)
Luke Mitchell – Calder Cannons / 197cm / 87kg

Profile : Tends to polarise junior footy watchers. Will be interested to see where Foj1 plants him because he probably sees more of him than most. I have been watching him for 2 years and frankly I rate him pretty high. Had a super GF last year and had some testing with GCS but got knocked back - testing this year was good bar his endurance. Has backed up last year’s final series with another set of really impressive performances having spent much of the year injured. Tall, agile CHF / FF type who works really hard and is a terrific mark. He also is pretty good below his knees and is very clean with his foot skills so he is going to be very hard to match up if he can realise all his potential and become a really hard match up for opposition sides.
Why West Coast: Need a tall fwd and with one of their last two picks I think they will hit one. Mitchell perfect for them as he suits the Subi ground and will use the space really well.
Similar to: Ben Griffiths
Draft Range: 20-50.
Roughie: If not him then I would think maybe a local tall like Hamp. Will Darling still be here?

Mitchell is a big lump of a kid who is probably not going to have to bulk up all that much to play AFL football. A lot of guys on their AFL profile put some head scratchers in the AFL player they compare themselves to (I still shake my head at Cornelius saying he played like O’Keefe) but Mitchell comparing himself to Jonathan Brown is very appropriate. He is a big guy like Brown, plays a very similar role, moves like him and even has some of the same mannerisms. The way he marks on the high lead with the easy soft hands and then throwing the head forward a bit is eerily similar. What is also similar is his lack of pace and at the moment he doesn’t have Brown’s engine which allows him to keep working and presenting and burn defenders off.

My biggest concern with Mitchell is whether he is going to be able to get separation at AFL level. He relies a lot at the moment on being much bigger and stronger than his defender. At AFL level the defenders are still going to be smaller than he is but they will be close to as strong as he is and will be quicker and more athletic. He marks well and has good hands but there aren’t many forwards in the AFL who can rely on getting enough marks with a defender going with you every step. The fact that he has grown 4cm this year and put on nearly 10kgs is going to help him. He is now almost at ruck height and this both makes him harder to defend and also puts him into a category of players who could be looked at as a forward who could relieve in the ruck under the new interchange rules. What he needs to do most is to improve his endurance base (having a quick look I think he had the worst beep test of anyone at Combine). This will allow him to put in the repeat leads that will give him a chance to pop free and also allow him to get up the ground where the defender is less likely to be as effective. He needs to go and have a look at the role Brown had in the Lions premiership teams and model his game on that. More endurance would also allow him to ruck more effectively. His pace is solid but nothing more than that.

He has a pretty classical kick for goal with a high leg follow through. He has range out to 50 and is one of the most accurate shots in this year’s draft. Around the ground he is a nice kick of the ball and like Brown he is a very good deliverer of the ball into the 50. He knows where the forwards want the ball and puts it there for them with good weight. He has an easy style but does not laser it in there. He missed the Champs this year and a large proportion of the season after having shoulder surgery. He returned with good form in the TAC but shoulders are very difficult to get right and could easily become chronic if it is not carefully managed (take it from someone who knows). The comparison to Ben Griffiths is well worth considering in this regard. He was a very well regarded prospect coming into this year and despite the injury issues is one that I am a sure a lot of teams have their eyes on. I think someone in need of a forward will jump before here but I am not sure I would be taking the risk unless my need for a forward was pretty great.

Overall Mitchell is a big strong prospect who has a lot of potential as a KPF but brings with him very large risks from a athletic and injury perspective.

#47 (Richmond) - Luke Mitchell (VIC)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 96kg, DOB: 28/2/1992
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Style: Jonathan Brown
Range: 26-late
Why: Very strong overhead as well as on the lead. Powerfully built so maybe some questions on upside. Kicking can be a little off but once he gets it going can kick allot of goals. Missed the start of the season due to injury and came back mid way through to have some very strong games including a very strong TAC Cup Grand Final for the second year in a row which I’m sure will reflect favourably! Some think he might still go 1st round or very close to it but I think his draft range is a little more open than that.

Pick 20 Fremantle Luke Mitchell Calder
Mitchell had his year destroyed by dislocating his shoulder in the preseason however showed enough at the end of the year to keep himself in the mind of all. Luke will need to develop into a strong bulky forward who can kick goals and break backs crashing packs. He has the build that looks like he will develop into a very large unit and has grown to 198cm which is prime AFL KP size. The Dockers will hope that Mitchell can turn into a physical forward who can have a real presence in the forward line. I think the Dockers will look at Conca with this pick who looks a nice replacement for Haselby or Lucas Cook as another forward option.

Sorry grub, they sped through it faster than expected.

Pick 26, West Coast, Luke Mitchell, 198cm, 93kg

Tall forward with very good marking and able to find his own ball. In his own words, he's like Jonathon Brown (yes please, bring it on!) Plays between CHF and FF, but I would expect more towards FF at the Eagles. Also listed as being able to play as a defender, but I don't know about the versatility side.

With his size he should get games next year, unless for some unbeknowns reason the Eagles still think Lynch can play FF.

I see RE copping a bit for selecting Chalwell, but I was considering him here, along with a number of mids, but decided to go tall first.

2008 School footy thread

There seems to be a lot of talk about this player on BigFooty. On a scholarship from St Bernards and now at MGS, he could be a very handy player whether it be forward or maybe in the ruck. Heard he kicked 18 goals in one game. Will be playing Under 16 Championships and expect him to do very well.

Don't forget he is a underage Year 11 so he still has growth left in him.

Look out for him because he could have a very big year.

lukey mitch kicked 4 goals in a half in a recent praccy match for the cannons and could have snagged a few more had he been selfish.

btw got offered the scholarship out of the blue and was quite a tough decision.

kicked the best set shot i've ever seen at toad road about 35m out against a howling wind and made the distance easy

star, dominating MGS first as a 16 year old

Kept BGS guessing today when despite being captain, was left of the team sheet. Put Watts to shame, kicking 6.2, taking about 15 marks, and even had a stint in the middle in the last 10mins when the game was on the line.

AFL Prospectus - Potential Top 25

Luke Mitchell – 195cm, 83kg – Key Forward – Calder Cannons

Mitchell is a key position forward who played four matches for Vic Metro in the 2008 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships and also two games for Calder in the TAC Cup at the end of that season. In 2009 he played 12 matches for Calder and was instrumental in their success. His 28 goals ranked him equal 14th on the TAC Cup goal kicking ladder and his 80 marks at an average of 7 per match was elite, which included 26 contested and 21 on the lead.

Interview by Gerard Kennedy

How valuable has Martin Allison been as a coach and getting you to the Granny?

He’s a fairly different coach to what I’ve had in the past. He is very team orientated and doesn’t really focus on how many kicks someone gets. He more considers the selfless acts and the team things like tackles, shepherds and blocks. It’s a ‘Cannon’s Tradition’ to play team-based footy and Martin keeps this at the forefront of our minds.

Interview by Gerard Kennedy

Nice to get two guys from the strong Cannons team who are already well drilled in the 1%ers and team things.

I like this self-effacing comment from Duigs

"I knew that if I was going to be drafted it was going to be with Carlton's last pick, but I was hoping it would slide by a little more unnoticed than it was."

:thumbsu: :D...probably not the attention you want as a 25yo smokey
