M. Harvey - Essendon Over Celebrated

The man is one of my all-time favorites to wear the red and black so I am not going to slag him off.

This is the kind of thing Sheeds did every 2nd week. He learnt from the master!!!

I could have been an assistant coach in 2000 and we still would have won the premiership.

Well you weren't, Harvs was. He is also a 3 time premiership champion of Essendon. As far as i'm concerned he can say whatever he likes, he's earned it.

i could say that i could have outsprinted usain bolt the other night but i didn't. just like team hurley has never been involved in an afl premiership (let alone 4!)

I really am starting to doubt Harvey's ability as a coach. Why the hell would he want to give an inconsistent, poor interstate team like Essendon some ammunition against his boys?

Maybe deep down he wouldn't mind to see his old club playing finals and hang on to pick #3, and/or actually have the opposition firing to see what his team is made of after putting the acid on for a woeful effort last week.

If Essendon don't turn up to play (like vs WC when finals motivation should have been there as well), winning such a game at this point of our season really wouldn't tell us anything. It would be better to compete strongly (win or lose) against a team that came to play.

If anything it's a positive for Essendon, reinforces our desire for a winning culture over the pursuit of high draft picks. As for the comment, I'll always celebrate a good win by the Bombers and I hope the players and all associated with the club do as well, it's what they are a part of it for in the end afterall...:thumbsu:

At the risk of going off-topic, I had never realised/thought about the fact that in all of '84, '93 and '00 we won both the Pre-season and H&A premierships.

Very rare these days.

Just one small thing: it wasn't a pre-season competition in 1984 ..

Sort of. Wasn't it a night series that started preseason and finishe during the year. Games were played midweek and it was a night series. MAybe someone older can elaborate or correct me.

I think Harvs wants you on top of your game in Perth. Whatever his motives I'd welcome the reminder that finals isn't a done deal yet.

He will be a decent coach also..he inherited a crazy list and is doing the weeding now.

I remember him from the eighties, what a champ.

I only vaguely remember, it was definitely a night series though.

I also remember Essendon playing Hawthorn in the US, I believe it was on astro-turf (Grid-iron oval)... can someone confirm this?

I can't remember exactly when it would have started (jeez, it's depressing to think it's 25 years ago now .. I am suddenly feeling very old). But the clubs played most of the fixtures midweek during the regular VFL season rather than preseason. And yes, they were night games.

It's interesting to think about how today's players would have coped with playing three matches in a week!

Yeah, we played Hawthorn in an exhibition match at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami in late 1989. We defeated Hawthorn by 14 points.

Yeah, and we played them around that time in an exhibition match in Japan as well. It would probably have been either 1986 or 1987 from very hazy memory.
