I used to love magic as a kid. Always intrigued the hell out of me, and I always wished I could master tricks to amaze my friends and family. However, lack of patience and skill meant I was pretty damn average magician.

To this day, I still get transfixed watching a magician apply his trade. This was rekindled the other week after they held "close-up magic week" on Letterman. Every night, a different close-up magician would come in and perform. It was awesome.

Naturally, this got me youtubing. My favourite routine would have to be "Doves" by Lance Burton. Beautiful.

Johnny Ace Palmer is pretty nuts also.

Who are your favourite magicians? Favourite routines? While Copperfield and Chris Angel are cool, their routines have the budget of a hollywood film. I love the spectacle, but for men, sleight of hand is where its at. :spade::club:

Watched the show the other day where they showed how to do quite a few of the tricks. Was quite interesting.

copperfield is a ****ing shithouse douchebag!

i paid almost 500 dollars for my girlfriend and i to see his show last year as i'd always been captivated by magic and always wished to see it live.

the guy was on stage for maybe a bit over an hour with only one trick that was any good....everything else was quite boring and easy to spot how he did it. that one cool trick though i had nfi how he did it and it was actually amazing.....
anyways after that trick he's like ok that's it, cya melbourne! and since he'd been saying jokes all night we all seemed to think he was joking.....so the entire audience is literally still sitting in their seats for about 3 minutes waiting for him to come back thinking it's a prelude to something big when over the speakers some guy says "ok that's it....time to vacate the premises" and people are all looking at each other as if to say....ummmmm wtf?

absolutely fuming i go to the toilets to take a piss and every guy in there is going nuts saying "what a ****ing waste of money/piece of shit that was! 250 bucks for that crap!".......i couldn't agree with them more.

no respect for the prick whatsoever.

HAHAH sucked in. :)

What a push over you must be, you got ripped off. That was the trick. Hahahha

How the hell is that Lance Burton shit even possible?

The doves are easy, comparatively (not saying I could do it!). Seems to have one up each sleeve, and the third one beneath his left lapel (look at his right hand just before he starts bunching the ribbon. Candlesticks are insane, spring loaded and collapsible perhaps? Still very well executed if they are.

I think that's how he does it.

Yup! Seems about right with the candles!
... Look very closely at the 2nd one he brings out, you can see him pinch at something behind the scarf (1:43) just before it's revealed and his right hand moves along to extend the candle out to size. Also, see right at the end as he bows? The ends of the scarf look pretty weighted. :p I'm onto this bloke now. :D

Yep, and at 1:46-7, you see his hand slide down the bottom of one of the candles, seconds later, the third candle appears in that hand. Collapsed one must have been kept inside the other one, even if just for a moment.

We're little bloody detectives, aren't we! :cool::o

The last dove seems the most obvious. You can see where he palms it when he brings the scarf back and forth across his chest and then when he makes it disappear he throws his right hand behind him, probably putting the dove either underneath the back of his jacket or in his pocket. The scarf never leaves his left hand but when he conceals the dove it looks like the scarf appears in his right hand.

He is ****ing good, I'll give him that.

There's a pommy guy who performs at the Freo buskers festival some years called Nick Nicholas. Absolutely amazing slight of hand magician. Magic is a hell of a lot more impressive on the street in front of you than on stage with highly synchronised lighting etc.

Nah, I reckon the second is the most obvious, you can see the white gloves in his hand as he takes it back behind him. First is pretty obvious too. Just lets them out of his sleeve. He does it very well, but it's pretty basic. The third is a lot harder to spot IMO, he's incredibly subtle palming it.

His palming skills are amazing. The thing with this type of dove is they are able to be "compacted". You can fold their head underneath one of their wings and it pretty much renders them catatonic. Then when you go for the reveal, you just have to flick their head out and they instantly wake up. Takes years of practice to do it half as good as Burton though.

That dove one is awesome. NFI what's going on with those candles.

I haven't seen too much to be honest, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be up the rest of the night watching clips!

Pretty amateur video, but I've always loved this one -

cool story bro.

Seems like your the douchebag for paying to see copperfield :D

so i'm a douchebag for taking my g/f out to see a show and expecting it to be better than it was......:S
i guess that makes sense when you take into consideration it's coming from a random wankstain in a forum with clearly nothing useful/constructive to add.

The problem is you're focusing on the things in life that don't really matter. When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams. We all did. But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck.
