Preview Magical pick 59 (or thereabouts)

Shouldn't presume acquiring Maguire is a done deal, Carlton have their fitness staff checking him out still, he has to pass some tests and then he has a chance at getting selected, Based on article i posted last page.

I agree. I was originally on the 'Get Goose' bandwagon but I'm actually starting to re-think the Maguire option since I read that he recently had the metal rod removed from his leg. I had assumed that this had already been done and that last year his leg was nearly back to full heath. I had an Ex who had a rod removed from her leg and it took a very long time for the Bone-Marrow to grow back and fill the space. It also left her with a permanent limp.

Pick 12 (if there isn't a better option left) or 43 for Daniel Archer (if he hasn't gone by then) and 59 for another youth.

I'm more than a little curious to know how you could possibly know how long it took for the bone marrow to fill the space again?
It also left her with a permanent limp.
Are you saying before the r/o the rod she didn't limp, and then afterwards did?
That would be very unusual, especially given that the intra-medullary space is aneural.........i.e. cause no pain.

The removal of the rod doesn't mean anything in terms of how his leg is (other than that it has healed, which we assumed by the fact he returned to play footy).
The tibial nails are fixed with cross pins at either end to keep then in position. Sometimes they can be sore where the rod and pins are adhered to the surface of the bone (sometimes almost as sore as a break, as its the skin on the bone that causes the pain in a break) and this can tear when the hardware is removed.

I would be surprised if he wasn't back doing everything this week. There should be no more than a bit of soreness from the op sites, so nothing permanent from this latest op.

Obviously I'm not a F#cking doctor, but you seem to think you are!
All I know is that her doctor had her on a couple of different medications for a few months after the pin was removed to assist with regrowth & immune system (marrow also has a bit to do with the immune system I am led to believe). It was also a few months after being taken off medication that her leg was anywhere near healed. I assume that would mean 'Goose' would have at least 4-5 months of rehab before after his leg could be considered healthy enough to play on. But feel free to pick holes in that assumption. Dunno about the limp. Maybe it was because of the initial break, or maybe the pin being removed, like I said, I'm not a Doctor.

yeah if we get a kid that plays in 3 years time... in a strong side like the one we will have then... were looking better than someone who will struggle to make a weaker side next year....:thumbsu:

and please dont compare Macdonald to judd....

Hey - if you can guarantee me the kid we get at 59 will be good enough to hold down a regular position in our side in 3 years time, then by all means - i'm all for it. Macdonald is at least capable now of playing senior footy now - more so that Goose and Johnson, and might still be in three years time. All this talk about building for the future - at what point do we stop and say now is the time (not saying Macdonald is the answer to that either) but how long do we 'build' for? Do we need to be reminded of all the 'kids' we've recruited over the last 5-8 years at low picks that haven't made it?

And as for comparing Macdonald with Judd - please, he's not even in the same stratosphere, all I pointed out that even the best players are prone to the odd brain fade from time-to-time, or poor decision or clanger.

Funnily enough, after watching a few videos of Aaron Black for Peel, I started getting distracted by the dominance and quality of a certain #5. He featured in plenty of Black's highlights, and I was mighty impressed.

Looked it up, and sure enough, Rhett Mason was the #5 for Peel. Obviously I'm sure he has plenty of flaws (which would explain his lack of draft camp invitations), but I really thought he showed a bit.

Rookie list?

Appreciate your acknowledgment SOAP. For a while there I thought I was the only one on B&F that's noticed Mason's abilities.

IMO I don't think he'll last to our first pick in the rookie draft, that's why I think Carlton should pull the trigger in the ND or pick 10 in the PSD?

Mason doesn't come with any serious flaws, however he isn't perfect. No player is. Rhett would thrive in a professional AFL environment, especially at Carlton, the club he follows.

Mason kicked 29 goals in 17 games (14 H&A, Semi, Prelim & Grand final) not bad for a goal kicking mid with flaws :D. He would compliment McLean and eventually replace Hadley, further strengthening our midfield :thumbsu:.

seen a fair few of Mason's games too, certainly knows where to run to find the ball, but from what I have seen he reminds me of a less athletic version of Grigg and not sure he fills a need, more a rookie chance I would have thought.....

Fair point. IMO Grigg is better suited to the wing or HBF where he can use his pace, hence the reason why I would have Mason along side McLean and set Judd and his protégés (Murphy & Gibbs) free to run riot.

Jim's very sure of himself
What other reason did we get rid of Cloke. Assuming full health it doesn't take a genius to work out that extra space is for Maguire. He'll go at pick 59 or the PSD. I'm sure you've worked out that what the club wants. Doesn't matter what you guys want. Seems Ratten wants him by the sounds of todays interview.

A list is 38 not 22 and mature body depth is important. Decent depth got us home last year when we had injuries and end up still winning 7 from 8 at the end at one stage. when you need to use your 34, 35, 36th player out of necessity kids won't cover that, You need the right balance of kids and mature bodies, especially when a top side. Doesn't matter so much if you're Melbourne.

If he doesn't come up fitness-wise then speculate on pick 59 whther it be a kid or mature-aged player. No point before.

i could be mistaken, but I thought nominations for the ND had closed and I don't remember hearing that McGuire had nominated. That said if we were to draft him it could only be in the PSD or the rookie draft

Delisted players have until the 18th November. It'll probably be the PSD anyway to have a longer look at Maguire.

And he's also got alot more control of his own destiny if he nominates for the PSD. Far easier to get to Carlton at selection #11 in the PSD, than a club he wants to get to in the ND. There might also be a few clubs ahead of us who don't participate in the PSD either. They'll use all their selections in the ND.

"Say whattttt?"

Depends who is left on the board, but if I make a quick assessment can you hold off a couple of minutes and I'll join you.
Pick 43: CARL Matt Maguire
Height: 190cm Weight: 94kg DOB: 30/04/84

The former St. Kilda CHB has been training with Carlton recently and could add some experience and leadership to an inexperienced defensive unit. Must be some serious queries about his fitness after his horrific recent run with injury but if he gets the ok from the Carlton medical staff he could be a shoe-in for this pick.
