Re: Mal Michael -Retired

All the best Mal - a sad day for all of us but an exciting time for you, Kim and the family...

Re: Mal Michael -Retired

It has just hit me, really. I am feeling quite sad now, Big Man Mountain Mal was a pillar in defence. He is probaly the one of the reasons we succeeded to reach 4 consecutive Grand Finals.

Off-field and on-field we will all miss his presence. Mini Mal (Roe) will not only lost a role model but a mate. Merrett and Mills will sorely miss his experience. Hopefully Mal and Leppa could drop by on occasions and take Roe, Mills and Merrett and teach them the ropes.

We will miss you Mal. :( :(

Re: Mal Michael -Retired

It won't be the same without Mal, calm and relaxed, doing his job down back. Mal certainly had a style all his own... I used to catch him watching the replay screen at the Gabba on occasions when play had stopped. You'd reckon he'd play football the same way regardless of whether it was in the AFL or in the backyard.

Amazing full back. With the focus these days on players being able to play several positions and having versatility, we should perhaps think that the reason that some players can only play one position is because they're really, really good at it.

Re: Mal Michael -Retired

I guess I should consider myself lucky, since i'm kind of removed from all of this unlike you guys. Real sad to see these guys that we've loved to watch over the years retiring. Not really expecting but secretly hoping for some good news later today.:o We bloody need it.

Theres going to be gridlock when they do the drive around the Gabba next year.

I found that really funny for some reason.

All the Toyotas with ex-Lions in the back will be backed up along Vulture steet, across the Captain Cook bridge and onto Coronation Drive.

MAL MICHAEL

Mal Michael began his career as a rookie with Collingwood before being traded to Brisbane at the end of 2000 to fill a void in defence. Michael made an immediate impact at the Lions, holding down the all-important full-back position during the historic hat-trick of premierships in his first three seasons at the Club. Powerful, athletic and durable, Michael was largely unheralded and unlucky not to receive All Australian honours on a number of occasions. He retired from the game at the end of 2006 to focus on off-field interests before signing with Essendon where he ultimately finished his career. Michael played 140 matches across six great seasons with the Lions.

Ashley McGrath

Mal Michael was the biggest prankster. He used to steal blokes’ car keys and go and move their cars so they would think their cars had been stolen. He also lit Nigel Lappin’s hedge on fire once, which we thought was hilarious, but Nigel didn’t really think so.

Michael urges Power to kick on with GWS

Three-time AFL premiership fullback Mal Michael, who came out of retirement to play under Kevin Sheedy at Essendon, has urged Luke Power to continue his playing career at Greater Western Sydney. After a stellar career with Brisbane, Michael announced the end of his AFL career in 2006, only to play two more seasons with the Bombers after Sheedy helped change his mind.
"The thing with Sheeds is, he likes to explore all avenues and opportunities that are available to him," Michael said."That's what he did with myself. I think he realises that if he can add any value to his current squad, he'll have a look at that."

Mal treasures memories
May 16, 2013

Former full-back Mal Michael’s match-worn 2001 Brisbane Lions Grand Final guernsey hangs proudly in his Melbourne home as a constant reminder of the Club’s remarkable period of success.

Michael maintains a special affinity towards the garment he wore in 140 matches with the Club. “The jumper is a good throw-back to a great era,” Michael told lions.com.au. “My 2001 premiership jumper is in a big frame along with the premiership medal and a photo from the day. It looks amazing.”

Michael said his most vivid memory from that period was the team’s unwavering self-belief. “I remember prior to us winning the Grand Final, you’d travel over to Perth thinking that not many teams go over to Subiaco and win,” he said. “But during that premiership period, we confidently got on the plane and, regardless of where we were going, knew that we were going to win. We had enormous self-belief.”

Unfortunately even through our premiership years we rarely beat West Coast, even less so in Perth.:(
Michael’s memory is a bit askew. He must mean the retirement years he spent in the "Red Sash" uniform.

Was great to have big Mal back at the club to present young Billy with his jumper. He was always a favourite of mine during the glory years and I have long forgiven him for the way he left the club. Seeing Mal Michael, Leppa and Blacky all back together at the Gabba with Charmo, Notting and Browny also present for the night was a great sight to see. Nothing better then seeing ex players back at the Gabba imo particularly those from the premiership era and it is even better when there are multiple.

Wow now I think about it Marcus Ashcroft was also present as a Suns staff member. Ashcroft, Leppa, big Mal, Blacky, Browny, Charmo and Possum all at the Gabba for a Lions home game. That has to be the largest amount of former premiership players present at a Lions home game in a while doesn't it?

Where Are They Now?: '03 Premiership Team

Mal Michael is based in Melbourne but splits his time month on/month off between there and Port Moresby. He is a Partner in MW PNG Limited, which, in his words, is involved in primary industries and the resource sector, especially commercial agriculture. He has one boy and one girl.

Brisbane Lions Hall Of Fame 2023 Re-Cap

Mal Michael is one of kind. Not just because he’s the only AFL star born in Papua New Guinea. And not just because he was the first rookie in AFL history. But because he was the strongest, most miserly and hard-to-play-on key defender in the AFL era through the Brisbane Lions golden era.

From Port Moresby via Brisbane’s western suburbs and rival club Collingwood, Michael found his way ‘home’ to the Brisbane Lions in 2001 to become a three-time AFL premiership player.

He’d always wanted to play for Brisbane, but it hadn’t worked out .. until it did. And then it was special. He played 97 of 101 games in 2001-02-03-04 and finished 8th-6th-10th-6th in the coveted Merrett/Murray Medal. He was a star. But in 13 finals through the special times only Simon Black and Nigel Lappin polled higher. He was a superstar.

A 238-game veteran with Collingwood, Brisbane and Essendon, one of the very best fullbacks of the modern era, and now a member of the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame... MAL MICHAEL
