MAL MICHAEL
Mal Michael began his career as a rookie with Collingwood before being traded to Brisbane at the end of 2000 to fill a void in defence. Michael made an immediate impact at the Lions, holding down the all-important full-back position during the historic hat-trick of premierships in his first three seasons at the Club. Powerful, athletic and durable, Michael was largely unheralded and unlucky not to receive All Australian honours on a number of occasions. He retired from the game at the end of 2006 to focus on off-field interests before signing with Essendon where he ultimately finished his career. Michael played 140 matches across six great seasons with the Lions.

Mal Michael was the biggest prankster. He used to steal blokes’ car keys and go and move their cars so they would think their cars had been stolen. He also lit Nigel Lappin’s hedge on fire once, which we thought was hilarious, but Nigel didn’t really think so.

Three-time AFL premiership fullback Mal Michael, who came out of retirement to play under Kevin Sheedy at Essendon, has urged Luke Power to continue his playing career at Greater Western Sydney. After a stellar career with Brisbane, Michael announced the end of his AFL career in 2006, only to play two more seasons with the Bombers after Sheedy helped change his mind.
"The thing with Sheeds is, he likes to explore all avenues and opportunities that are available to him," Michael said."That's what he did with myself. I think he realises that if he can add any value to his current squad, he'll have a look at that."

Former full-back Mal Michael’s match-worn 2001 Brisbane Lions Grand Final guernsey hangs proudly in his Melbourne home as a constant reminder of the Club’s remarkable period of success.
Michael maintains a special affinity towards the garment he wore in 140 matches with the Club. “The jumper is a good throw-back to a great era,” Michael told lions.com.au. “My 2001 premiership jumper is in a big frame along with the premiership medal and a photo from the day. It looks amazing.”
Michael said his most vivid memory from that period was the team’s unwavering self-belief. “I remember prior to us winning the Grand Final, you’d travel over to Perth thinking that not many teams go over to Subiaco and win,” he said. “But during that premiership period, we confidently got on the plane and, regardless of where we were going, knew that we were going to win. We had enormous self-belief.”

Big, big part of the 3Peat.
He was awesome to watch.
Man had no fear.
Love what he gave to the Club![]()

Mal Michaelis one of kind. Not just because he’s the only AFL star born in Papua New Guinea. And not just because he was the first rookie in AFL history. But because he was the strongest, most miserly and hard-to-play-on key defender in the AFL era through the Brisbane Lions golden era.PLAYERCARDSTARTMal Michael

From Port Moresby via Brisbane’s western suburbs and rival club Collingwood, Michael found his way ‘home’ to the Brisbane Lions in 2001 to become a three-time AFL premiership player.
He’d always wanted to play for Brisbane, but it hadn’t worked out .. until it did. And then it was special. He played 97 of 101 games in 2001-02-03-04 and finished 8th-6th-10th-6th in the coveted Merrett/Murray Medal. He was a star. But in 13 finals through the special times only Simon Black and Nigel Lappin polled higher. He was a superstar.
A 238-game veteran with Collingwood, Brisbane and Essendon, one of the very best fullbacks of the modern era, and now a member of the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame... MAL MICHAELPLAYERCARDSTARTMal Michael
