Watching the Hawks/Port game yesterday, Malcolm Blight referred to the footy as the "apparatus", not once but twice.

Has this guy gone completely mad? I literally watched the last quarter yesterday with the TV on mute because i couldn't listen to the garbage coming out of this guys mouth any longer.

He needs to put in a home because I don't think he's aware of what he's saying or doing.

He's completely lost his marbles...

I felt the exact same way. I couldn't believe how much the man talks, and not one iota of sense came out in all that time. Not to mention he makes the 'pucking' sound with his lips everytime hes about to say something, its infuriating. Then he went onto compare something in the game to society, to the effect of: "We always want more. When you're driving in a 60km zone, you always drive a little bit more" Good think Huddo cut him off. He's just a tool. A blight on commentating and the game

Didn't hear the commentary, but agree with the general sentiments.

Saying that, his 'outburst' against Fremantle in the Fifth Quarter, although I'm sure pre-rehearsed, was spot on the money.

I love Blight and his brand of intelligent insanity.

He's always fascinating to listen to, though you may spend a bit of time working out where he's coming from... but once you do... you know what? He's almost always right.

I agree. I get the impression that Blighty doesn't need the job, and only commentates for something to do. He probably thinks if he has to watch footy, he may as well get paid for it.

What I like about Blighty is if the game he's calling is crap (and it usually is), he's not afraid to say so. If a player does something incredibly stupid (and it happens often), Blighty will say so. The modern game drives Blighty nuts at times, as it does to all of us at times.

He's not a yes man who just wants to hang onto a high paying gig, he's an old fashioned footy lover whose opinions at times are very refreshing.

The one thing I really like about Sam Newman is a similar thing to Blighty in that he watches this evolved garbage they call footy and points out the absurdity of the things players do. You'll never hear Sam or Blighty use the term "quarterback" ... ever!!!

For the OP who questioned the word "apparatus", if you look up the dictionary you will find another word for apparatus is "equipment". As far as I remember, the ball was always part of my footy equipment.

The guy is nuts and I love his commentating for it. In the Port Hawthorn game he was talking about the keys to the funny farm, which isn't far from the truth. He has his own style, which basically is say what ever he wants to say, sure I can understand why people don't like it, but it isn't cliched or tryhard. I think thew guy is genuinely a bit loopy and doesn't hide the fact. He says what he thinks and in a weird kind of way he is generally right. Compare that to a toss bag like Walls who adds no insight, is uninteresting, says one thing and then when proven wrong argues the other etc. Love Blighty's commentating.

He's been mad for decades, and I love it. Always says what he is thinking without caring the slightest about offending anyone.

Sure, he's not always right, but when he is right it's really one out of the box. I struggle to think of anyone else in football commentary who can come up with such profound insights, and then even better give them to us in an interesting way.

Oh, and Adelaide Hawk, he may not have used Quarterback, but he has decided that the Centre Half Forward is dead in modern football, replaced with the "Wing Forward"

I've had the opinion malcolm indulges in the "green green grass of home" after a few of his outbursts.
BUT - I enjoy his brand of insanity and he thrashes the pants of morons like Huddo and quarters (to name but two) in regards of listenability

I love his commentary.

He really does have his head in the clouds at times, and he says some really bizarre or eccentric things but he can be very entertaining. He also has a tendency to make a very resonant and profound point in regards to the game, perhaps more so than any other commentator.

You can see why he was such a great coach but you can also see why he split opinions at footy clubs given his somewhat aloof demeanour and his out of left field comments. Very unpredictable.

Blight I find awesome, he has an angle most don't have and I am spewing I have missed his calling so far this year, he tends to only do Saturday arvo games and not every week.

I love Blighty - as someone else noted you won't find him spouting on with Americanised shite like 'quarterback'. I know the game is carried by U.S cable network ESPN but I'm sure the Yanks would love to hear the game called with Australian lingo, rather than their own slang in an accent that sounds funny to them.

He didn't call a football the apparatus did he - OMG call the men in white coats immediately. I've heard Rex Hunt call it the air conveyance - do you recommend Rex for the funny farm too? Your comments about Blight say more about you than him. There's a great big world out there beyond your little town in the bush.

Love Malcolm Blight.
Says what all supporters think during a game of footy. Why would you kick it to a guy who has to take a shot from the boundary line?? Thats just Dumb, and making it hard for yourself!! LOL

Starts most sentences with "See, I don't understand that. Why would you do that?" And he's almost always on the mark. I love his basic logical thinking, even if it comes across a bit illogical, it's quite the opposite.

He's hilarious. Sometimes he sounds like he's describing sex between two aliens, such is the oddness of his comments...and he knows he's being a nong sometimes and doesn't care. Need more like him.

p.s. Brooooooooce was again dreadful today in the Bulldogs v Carlton game. Ended nearly every sentence with his usual rhetorical question, beggin approval from Dennis and the Ox.
