Without trying to sound racist(because anyone who knows me knows I am not) Malthouse has conceeded himself he has cut him more slack because he is an indiginous player and he thought it was important to have more inginous players at collingwood. He somthing said along those lines about 2 years ago. I don't really agree with this point of view although I am not dead against it either.

While this is a bad reason for keeping someone on your list, by the same token our club had a terrible reputation amongst the indiginous community a few years back, thanks to our behaviour in the past. Indiginous kids werent exactly getting glowing reviews of Collingwood from their peers and elders and people they trust. I do think Malthouse believes he is doing the right thing by the club, and perhaps it will pay off in the future if we are able to retain and get the best out of the likes of Eagan, Cox and D i c k. And who knows maybe even Davis may come good.

totally agree, and the reason I am not dead against malthouses comments. The clubs reputation in the indiginous community 10 years ago was very bad and also justified in my opinion. I was at the Famous Nicky winmar game at vic park and was pretty embarrased to be a collingwood supporter that day. Davis has been the first indiginous player to really do anything at the club and that can ony be a good thing. I would imagine 10 years ago indiginous kids did not want to play in the black and white and I reckon now they do.

All that a side if I was simply judging leon as a player I don't think he did enough in his first 5-6 years to be on the list. But I don't lose sleep over it because I can see the other benifits.

If MM is sacrificing on field for social conscience then he has over stepped the mark. The only reason for Leon Davis to be played and/or retained on the list in spite of inadequate performances is that MM feels he will become a very good player. I don’t what the truth of it is but I have cringed hearing MM talk about Leon and his relevance of him playing to his community.

I agree. If that's the way it is, then Malthouse is stupid to speak up about it. But I still hold up a lot of hope for the "feeling he (Leon) will become a very good player" bit; but my personality is more speculative. For the style of player he's been, Leon needs to win the game off his own boot 3 or 4 times a year, not merely make an appearance 3 or 4 times a year. Last year was very encouraging.

2002 GF + Mark McGough = win

Then again, 2002 GF + Cloke = win,
2002 GF + Anthony Rocca goal = win,
2002 GF + Tarrant free vs. White - Lynch Free vs. Wakelin = win

McGough would have been handy had he been included for Molloy given how lame Molloy was. Had we won the ball out of the middle a couple of times in time-on periods I think we would have won. McGough may have helped there but in reality we had good contested ball winners in the guts. What would have really made the difference would have been a tap ruckman to make sure Brisbane didn’t have those few clearances they got from the ruck service that got them some time-on goals that we couldn’t answer. In reality it would have been an underpowered side pinching a flag as it was but a ruckman would have made a big difference IMO. MM didn’t see it that way and didn’t think we needed to change anything for the following year and still doesn’t.

We all remember the incidents late in the game but lets take our rose coloured glasses off and look at the game in its entirety if we are going to judge decisions.

This might not be a popular opinion but the umps gave us plenty in the first half and at best evened it up late in the game. The Rocca one hurts but I honestly believe over the entire game we got the rub of the green from the umps. Brisbane also kept us in the game. The game should have been almost over at half time had they taken their chances. I reckon we had a better second half and were flying after Fraser put us in front. There may have been a few incidents that didn't go our way but we still had our chances. Tarrant and licca both missed chances in the last quarter and we let voss run a muck. It was a mighty effort by the pies that day but to me(and its hard to say) I reckon Brisbane where still a slightly better side and still deserved the win.

We can talk about wouldas couldas shouldas all we like but it will never change history and won't make anyone feel better about it.

I reckon its time to move on

i've got the stats for that game and we amassed 73 tackles to their 44 i bet they weren't expecting that kind of pressure they were red hot favourates.now we need every side that hits the field to have that kind of intensity this year and we are half way there again! and again and again and again

I don't really recall Leon's 2002 form leading in but we didn't have much depth. He certainly played like a bloke with little to offer one way or another.

I haven't read the first 2 pages of this thread but as much as I am a MM supporter I don't know why we would give him an extension already. The only reason would be to give him security so he doesn't coach for his job. I hope Collingwood still haven't ruled out the option of sacking him, but then again MM said if it's truely time for him to go he will, I hope that is true.
