Thought it was interesting that Malthouse mentioned to the Collingwood players before the game the performance of the Reds against the Waratahs in which the Reds won by holding out a rampaging Waratahs. I am a Reds (and Bombers fan) and watched the match. Thought you may be interested in some highlights. Cooper, who scores for the Reds, is the Pendlebury of the Reds. :D I wish those in footy would learn from the other football codes as Mick has clearly done.

I thought it was a great analogy tbh even though we probably weren't as up against it as the Reds. The Bombers had the ball in their attacking half for 75% of one of the quarters and looked ominous for a large chunk of that yet we still managed to hold them off.

As for the Reds they were under siege! From the 50 minute mark to the 70 minute mark of that match the ball didn't leave there defensive 22 and spent the majority of that time in their defensive 5. Phil Waugh was offered the penalty goal 3 times in that period and he refused each time. The 4th time they received a penalty Waugh was off the field and was seen to utter "just take the f***ing points" or words to that effect. It was one of the most brilliant defensive displays I've ever seen and was ten times more exciting than the Blues v Crows match.

I reckon if the AFL were serious about poaching Rugby talent Cooper would be the way to go some of the stuff he can do is amazing, he makes Hunt look like an absolute amateur when it comes to skill with a rugby ball.

Also Fandango you'll be in for a good year because the Reds look like they could go all the way and the Bombers look top 4-6 for mine.

Yeah, Scodog, really pleased with the Reds and Bombers. Particularly considering the Reds were horrible from 2004 -2008. Bombers also much improved. Agree that Cooper is a freak.

Yea, I was at the Reds game & I can definitely see the point that Malthouse was making. Play was basically camped at the Waratahs try line but the Reds just wouldn't let them in. Sometimes those wins that a team just grinds out are so much more valuable.

Can't say I've watched more than a handful of rugby games. I like Mick's openness to watching + learning from other codes. It's a great way to learn new ideas and come up with a few new interpretations and variations on ways to improve things.

One sport I know we have been incorporating ideas from in recent years is basketball. Defensively we are incorporating a variant of the basketball full court press. Then offensively from this year we are incorporating some similar systems and similar quick ball movement ideas.

It's really interesting to view the correlations between a number of different sports. When you build up a strong knowledge base of a number of sports often it feels like you are watching/ playing a completely different sport through many of the offensive and defensive patterns as well as the feel for the games.
