Man accused of Ablett assault dies

July 11, 2006 - 1:18PM

A Geelong man accused of bashing former AFL star Gary Ablett has died.

Vyasa Ofthsea, 31, of Newtown, Geelong, was due to appear in Geelong Magistrates' Court today for a contest mention over the charges, but they were struck out when told he had died overnight.

It's believed Ofthsea committed suicide.

A spokeswoman for Victoria Police confirmed that a 31-year-old man had been found dead in Flemington, in Melbourne's inner west, last night.

Outside the court, Ofthsea's solicitor Margie Bourke said the mental health system had let her client down.

"I don't think it's the fault of the criminal justice system," she said. "I don't think there was any error in granting him bail.

"The problem is that our mental health system is so inadequate and so unable to deal with people in crisis that he just slipped through."

Ofthsea, of West Fyans Street, was granted bail on July 3 under conditions, including the requirement that he stay away from and make no attempt to contact Ablett.

Bail for the charges relating to the alleged attack on Ablett was initially denied, but Magistrate Kay Robertson granted bail on the condition that Ofthsea stay away from Ablett, remain at his current address and seek drug and alcohol counselling from Barwon Health within 24 hours.

The Geelong Magistrates Court was told that Ablett was looking at cars in a South Geelong car yard about 11.15pm on June 26 when he was allegedly attacked.

The incident occurred two days after Ofthsea had been bailed for an alleged burglary and assault on his former partner.

Yes, I think most would concur.

Why? Is it that hard to fathom? Who looks at cars at that time of night? Given that most car yards would be locked down.Is that really hard to figure out?

Maybe he doesnt like crowds

Seriously who gives a s***, and if he was doing anything illegal as you are certainly alluding to, well, we have police to deal with that.

I wouldnt disagree with that.

Good to know there's a few people out there that look at these sorts of issues a little deeper than they get reported.

Well, i will admit to being biased, but on the other hand i do support the notion that we (i, me, no one else), are responsible for our own actions.

But please, the other issue has been done to.. yeah.. you know. Lets leave it alone.

Funny, I didn't realise I was alluding to anything. You must have read someone elses post.

And this was from earlier today:

Accused flees to a party

A MAN accused of bashing football legend Gary Ablett has escaped from a psychiatric unit and partied with Italian soccer fans yesterday.

Vyasa Ofthsea, 31, of Newtown, Geelong, disappeared from Royal Melbourne Hospital between Friday night and Saturday morning.
Mr Ofthsea was admitted after police said they caught him smashing car windows with his bare hands in a city lane last week.

Cameras caught him with a multi-coloured mohawk haircut, celebrating in Lygon St.

Mr Ofthsea, on bail, was in court this month over allegations of an attack on Mr Ablett in a South Geelong car yard on June 26.

A court heard the assault was over a dispute involving Mr Ablett's daughter, Natasha.

It's alleged Mr Ofthsea demanded Mr Ablett hand over his wallet and $200.

Mr Ofthsea was bailed on July 3 on condition he stay away from Mr Ablett, stay at the same address, and seek drug and alcohol counselling. He was due back in court today.

Think there may end up being a bit more to this somehow.

The reason given is that Gary Ablett can't just go into a car yard and have a test drive without being surrounded by hordes of rubberneckers. Given the scrutiny that seems to accompany the bloke's every move, I think that's fair enough.

I agree . I hardly think he is the first bloke to wander through a closed car yard at night looking over the vehicles . That's a pretty common practise .

The bloke was severely mentally ill. I know someone who knows his case history, and let's say it's not unexpected.

I don't think Ablett has Vyasa's death on his conscience.

Mods, I don't think this thread is going anywhere healthy, maybe locking it might be a good idea?

If anyone know Rex Gorells Car yard in Geelong, they would know that it doesnt have fences stopping the general public from entering after hours. It is very common to see people in that yard after hours and later in the night, presumably attempting to avoid the pressure of a dealership employee after their next commission. I would not bat an eyelid if a saw a number of people after hours in this yard.
