Ablett's accused attacker dies

A 31-year-old Geelong man, who had been charged with assaulting and attempting to rob former AFL footballer Gary Ablett, has died.

The death of Vyasa Ofthsea overnight is not being treated as suspicious.

The charges against him have been dropped.

I guess i am opening myself up here for people to say it was Gary's fault, but c'mon show some common sense people. The guy was a nutter.

The reason given is that Gary Ablett can't just go into a car yard and have a test drive without being surrounded by hordes of rubberneckers. Given the scrutiny that seems to accompany the bloke's every move, I think that's fair enough.

Ok, I can see that.But you'd think the novelty may have worn off given it was 10 years since he pulled on a boot, and the people of Geelong would have had this last 10 years plus the previous 12 to 'rubberneck' Gary Ablett.One thing I will say is I really don't see how all this overt and unrelated (and probably unwanted) publicity would be beneficial to his two sons.

Apparently Ablett`s daughter had a run in with a member of his family ... and it appears that the attack may have been a "retribution" thing .

I'm not sure if this is connected but a body was found at the base of the flats in Kensington last night, he came through a plate glass widow from 15 floors up. The metal frame had been popped out, would imagine it to be difficult to do that yourself.
May not be connected.

What a tragedy, its hard to believe with all the taxes we pay people in this country still cant get proper help and care. Really is a disgrace.

Now a life has been lost and a family destroyed.

As for the Millane comments, he was a popular person so have some respect for his family and his friends. This sought of pain never goes away ever.

The mental health system is defiantly inadequate. However, what also needs to be addressed in this issue is the media’s involvement. The public embarrassment, driven by the media, the man was faced with after the alleged bashing would most likely have been a factor in the final outcome

Yes, I think most would concur.

Why? Is it that hard to fathom? Who looks at cars at that time of night? Given that most car yards would be locked down.Is that really hard to figure out?

My GF worked as a security guard at car yards from 10-2am .. she said the amount of people who would stop and look amazed her. It seems most people dont like pushy salesman and find the late hours gives them time to look without hassle...given Abletts high profile coupled with his reluctance to face the public..the time doesnt surprise me
