The "impostors" were the lawyers who did the Martinez transfer for Munich. The player and United had been using them as mediators with Athletic.

On Sunday, Martinez thought the deal was dead. Then he got a call saying United were offering 30m + 6m bonuses. Athletic rejected the offer but the player asked his agent to tell United to pay the 6m from the salary already agreed with him. (And presumably to give him the +6m bonuses, if he earned them.)

United gave the deal the go ahead.

The lawyers trotted off to Liga HQ. The player was told we'd be in touch to arrange the medical.

The player sat at home waiting for his medical. The lawyers sat in a bar waiting for United to do the money transfer.

At 11pm United were briefing the press that the lawyers weren't authorised to offer money on their behalf.

I await United's version with interest. And at this moment, disgust.

i don't think we'll even go for him in January as we got Fellaini instead. He was 1st priority and Fellaini was backup, that's the way i'm seeing it. anyway what's done is done and i think Fel will be alright and adds an x-factor to our team that's for sure

He had a solid season but that's about as good as he'll get - his poor form in the past has been offset by the fact that he was one of Ferguson's favourites. Far too passive a player in big games and this season thus far has been no different. Admittedly, he's hardly being pressured by the other players who play his position in our squad.

Don't get me wrong he had been average before last season but he held us together last year and earnt some respect back from me

I doubt Fellaini was a back up as we bid for him before Herrera. I'd say we tried both.

Not happy that we paid £27.5m for Fellaini, but ultimately I'm glad we got him, adds some depth to our squad and we needed a midfielder so desperately, finally, we got one.

The worrying thing for me is how disappointing our transfer window was, so many quality players we were linked with but just couldn't get anything done. Should have gone hard for Ozil as well.

The Fabregas saga was a massive WTF, because Cesc has said he never contemplated leaving and wants to stay at the club he loves, so why did we waste our time on him? Was it a case of Moyes thinking, "Hey, I'm the manager of the biggest club in the world, I can go for whoever I want"

Or was it just to say to the fans, "we are targeting the very best players".

I'm confident that his next window will be his strongest for us, he'll have had a season to work out which players he can turn around with his world class man management skills and which players will have to be replaced.

The league isn't won by beating the other top four teams, the league is won by dropping the least amount of points throughout the season. If Nani can 'bully' lesser teams and ensure we beat them it'll go a long way to helping us win the title.

I think it would take a change in attitude to even do that based on the last year. Certainly if Ferguson was still about I couldnt see a new contract, maybe Moyes can make a difference with him.

Yeah, he seems like a player that may flourish with some freedom, something that Fergie never really gave him.
