Should be a good get, although he did inherit a very good Claremont side from Simon Mcphee so he can't get all the credit for that. I always thought Scott Watters was overrated for similar reasons at Subiaco after he was given a super team built by Peter German. Anyway don't know too much about him, sure he's going to be an asset for our team.

Agree with your post however he did coach WA to a win over the Vic's which is a plus in my book considering the draught we had endured.

Meh, not sold on him has a touch of the Scott Watters about him.

Ex Subi player inherited a gun side at Claremont.

However as a side note if the Eags pick up Greg Harding, would be most delighted so long as he doesnt come to Freo.
Dig a bit deeper and you'll find he is about as far from Watters as you can get.

How so Tants?
From what I can understand Watters is not liked by the players at STK and seems to have alienated the vast majority of their playing list (by shopping them all off for a bag of crisps). I have yet to hear anything like this about Webb (though that may come out in time). Indeed all that I know of Webb is that he is a well-spoken, professional who has had a very successful WAFL career, both playing and coaching.

The diff between Watters's situation at Subi and Webb at Cla is minimal.

Watters at Subi inherited a super Subiaco team- was pretty much unbeatable under German, went to Collingwood off the back of that side which could have coached itself
Webb at Cla inherited a super Cla side- lets not forget Cla was the best side for 3 years at WAFL level which under McPhee had stars all over the ground.

As for Watters at STK- what else can he do, they need to rebuild and get quality kids in around great players such as Riewoldt, Montagna, Hayes and see how quickly they can develop.

I'm not necessarily talking about the strengths of the respective sides that they inherited.

I reckon there are a fair few clubs out there doing it better than the Saints. If you think cutting Goddard, NDS, Montagna, McEvoy and anyone else with a modicum of ability is good coaching, in order to tank for draft picks, I'd suggest that Melbourne has a lesson or two for you. The fact some of these players also want to leave is even more concerning.
Watters will get sacked within 12 months IMO. He is out of his depth and crippling the Saints and it will take a long while to recover from.

Maybe- depends on how they come along this year as to whether he gets sacked.

I would disagree with your usage of term cutting when Goddard leaves due to F/Agency, NDS will probably get traded and Mcevoy got traded for a quick midfielder which is what they need.

Anyways as for Webb- all Im saying is that his development as a coach is hindered by the fact that all of his coaching experience is at clubs on upswing and that its hard to get as gauge on how good he is as a coach given the talent he has coached, much the same as Watters at Subi.

There seems to be a common thread emerging that coaches who did their apprenticeships under The Grumpy One struggle with man-management, especially when it comes to senior players.

sorry im new to this ... malthouse ?!?

Yep.

For all his personality faults he seems to be quite adept at balancing a hard-arse persona with getting his players to play for him.

Whereas his apprentices (Neeld, Watters and Buckley) appear to have gone into their jobs all guns blazing and managed to get players offside from day 1.
