Hey guys. I thought Marcus Drum played well pre-season but he failed to get a game in round 1 - is he injured or just not a required player?
 
Well as he is my buddy I thought I would respond.

He should be in the team, top ten pick, hardly given a chance, three years in, if he doesn't play this year it will be getting too late.

I am not fussed about palmer not playinh first up, but when fit o'brien, foster, drun and ibbo should be given extended runs in the team.

But where do you play him Poshman? His best position is as a third tall defender so he's behind Mundy, Johnson, Grover, McPharlin, Dodd, Thornton and now Gilmore.

Mundy, McPharlin, Dodd and Gilmore are all able to play multiple positions though. Having Drum in the side just offers even more flexibility.

I have no idea where Thornton is at right now.

Scotty played half a game or so of reserves for Souths on the weekend. I'd imagine he's a few weeks off yet.

I'm not a big fan of McPharlin forward on a permanent or even regular basis - he has a tendency to play 2 or 3 really good games and then gets pretty lazy. It's not so much Drum that needs to step up as Mundy/Johnson/Gilmore taking that next step - then Drum can come in and be the newbie with plenty of support and without too much pressure one him.

Fair enough. I just think it leaves us with too many similar types and would prefer to see Ibbo and/or Palmer in the side.

Agree with that. I just think with some of the moves we've seen Harvey make Drum would be a very handy addition. When guys like McPharlin, Mundy, Dodd, Johnson and Gilmore are rotating into different positions Drum can fill the void down back, plus get some experience.

Drum can also be farily handy up forward so when Pavlich, Headland, Solomon and Tarrant are rotating into different positions he can fill the void there.

I just think he is a great player to have in the 22, even if it is starting on the bench.
 
Nightfury brock mclean is exactly what fremantle DONT need
Another small slowish in an under midfielder
We have plenty of them an that is our midfield problem

Give us Rivers or the guy whos done nothing so far but should be better Brad Miller an u can then have Drum

Drum should be in the side and will be soon. However, I think due to the losses of Solly and Black (both experienced running-types) and the need to bring in Warnock, Drum might have to wait another week.

My tips:

Out: Solly, Black, McManus/M Carr.
In: Warnock, Ibbotson, Mayne

Thornton injured is ankle or foot in that half of footy.

Granted he's smallish, but do you reckon he's slow. He has struck me as a speedy type IMHO. There is alot of upside with McLean - he is a good accurate kick and can read the match rather well. Decent fast inside midfielders are worth their weight in gold.
I've always been a fan of Yze for many years... but too old now. I saw him play a blinder against us at Subi a few years back. Kicks some freakish goals. There Russell Robertson is about the only guy in the AFL that can pull them down like McPharlin...

Palmer can play, no doubt, but he keeps getting caught out with the pace of the game and by all accounts didn't really star in the wafl. I think if the rest of our team was largely in form and getting the job done, Palmer would slot in for sure and would be given all the time in the world to work things out and start working some magic.

Unfortunately though, most (not all) of the team is playing okay at BEST and some of them are just downright horrible.

Due to that I think Mayne is a player who could be relied on to have more of an immediate impact and can also play up forward - something that makes Drum's absence less of a problem.

Couple that with losing the experience of Solly and Black, two guys who wouldn't normally put two ordinary performances back to back, and I have a feeling Harves will opt to keep a few experienced faces we'd rather he dropped. Two of M Carr, Macca and Ma Johnson will get a reprieve. Out of the 3 I'd gamble that M Carr and Ma Johnson will survive but its hard to tell for sure.

Realistically Peake and Crowley could also be on the chopping block but I don't think we'll see more than 3 changes this week.

However, we might be lucky :)

Would love to see any of Palmer, Mayne, Ibbo, Warnock and Drum in the side.

Why would we want more mediocre key position players? :confused: :confused:

Maybe, but why then is he on the list? Why havent we traded when he was still worth something?

Just the development question again. I would really like to see him played as part of three regular backs that for the heart of a solid accountable back half.

Grover, Hayden and drum. Mcpharlin can swap between (and is top class) mundy (i think did ok on the wing) can be used to deliver forward of centre, he can kick, he isn't the tightest marking player though. michael johnson needs to recapture the form he has, and then take a step to the next level. Black should be played rotating through the middle/wing. Crowley should never see the back half again. Schammer : see crowley.

Gilmore should stay in the team on current form, thornton - will he ever be able to play more than ten average to good games a year? If not, we need to develop someont instead of him.

Surely at the end of the year some of our talls will be looked at for trade; Drum, Murphy and Campbell seem the obvious contenders. Out of that lot Drum is the keeper for mine. In addition perhaps Mundy may be considered if a quality trade is available as Drum can probably play an identical role, with a bit more accountability.

With any of them, unless we are attracting a best-22 player, picks look good to me. It is probably unrealistic to expect a best-22 player for a player not in your best-22, but most of these players have demonstrated that they are AFL standard, but are excess to our needs.

It was mentioned that 4 clubs enquired about Murphy in October. Either Harvey thinks he is worth retaining or the offers were unacceptable.

Yes we'll probably wait till he's out of contract and then let him go in a deal which sees us give away our first 2 round draft picks & Murphy in return for Jason Johnson, pick 246 and a bag of magic beans.
