Recommitted Marcus Windhager - re-signed for 4 more years

A mostly reasonable post, but this caught my eye. The statement is a complete contradiction and goes against St Kilda’s recruiting strategy this offseason.

You don’t see how a player like Windhager could be put offside when similar/lesser players like Aleer, Ryan and Silvagni are getting greater offers to come play for St Kilda? Is he really worth less than half of TDK?

Can’t have it both ways.
I'd prefer to keep Windhager, but from what has been reported, he has placed a massive price tag on his head that the club doesn't agree with. He's a good player, but I reckon the club assesses that he is replaceable, because Garcia and Boxshall are younger and perform similar roles. Silvagni and Ryan are players that we don't have similar types on our list, so they will slot into our structure. As for Aleer, it was reported yesterday that Ross Lyon went to the Giants game yesterday to determine whether he wanted him or not. So it doesn't sound like we're committed. From what I saw, I don't think he'd be impressed, and the overwhelming opinion on our board is that we don't want him.

Oh I can see exactly why he could be put offside. Doesn't make him worth more than his value.

Just like I am offside because my neighbour's wife is hotter than mine. Doesn't mean I'm entitled to have a crack.

The late, great Robert Walls told the story of his time at the club when they were bringing in interstate players on bigger contracts. I think it was under Barrassi: you can chase a bigger pay cheque or stick around and win a premiership. I'm paraphrasing, but you get my gist.

Once again, comparing yourself to other players is irrelevant, especially your TDK argument. Different player, different list need, different ceiling.

I'll reiterate: we are a small club that has to pay overs to attract players. If we offer TDK the same $ he stays at the Blues. It is what it is.

FWIW, the game is moving past his type. And mids like him are dropping in value. The currency is for mids like NWM and Pou etc. That's why you keep Walsh and draft Jagga.

The question here is if he was playing for another club, would we be throwing big $$ at him? Knowing he is looking around, why aren't top 8 teams chasing him? What would the blues pay him?

Like I said, if he believes he can get better and wants to stay then go for 2 years and back yourself.

It’s well reported that the offer was only 2 years right up until a few days ago. What’s Aleer had on the table for the last 3 months?
Once again, you are comparing our offer to him to another player. Not on it's own merit.

If I'm selling a $1m house and asking $2m, and you offer $1m... are you low-balling me? Or are you offering fair market value?

Tough one. If we trade our F1 for Windy and keep Trac, it'd be two consecutive years out of the first round, which isn't great for a team at our stage of rebuilding. Chance that could be a pretty good pick, too.

But not entirely sure how this works without Trac and/or Oliver going. Langford, Pickett, Rivers, Lindsay, Windsor, Petracca, Oliver, Viney and Windhager looks like a good group on paper, but there's just not enough midfield minutes to go around.

TL;DR – wouldn't want to send out F1 if we keep both Petracca and Oliver, but would be open to sending a first from a Petracca trade.
Upgrade on 32 year old Viney, surely?

Oh certainly, we're just idiots who extended Viney for a 'good news story' last year, despite him being mostly cooked as a player. Can't play anywhere but mid, and has a best-22 golden ticket (hopefully the new coach puts an end to that, however).

early second gets it done
Wouldn't have thought so in this draft, given it'll likely be pushed back to the 30s in a fairly weak crop.

It's hard to make full judgement without knowing what figures we are offering him.

All I know is that our first offer seemed like a genuine slap in the face. It's good to know we have four years on the table now but I'd love to know at how much.

Just seems like there is very little strategy involved. All short term sugar hits with no long term vision.

Offer Windhager unders because you have lesser players on the list who could play his role. “Could” being the key word here with the switch up from rebuild thinking to finals now.

Offer TDK severe overs despite having Marshall, a superior ruckman, and Dodson, a great young kid who aligns perfectly with Marshall slowing down.

Very inconsistent imo. It will be a shame for the Saints to lose a home grown NGA kid and after all the fuss about academy advantages it makes it further baffling.

He’s got a 4 year $800k offer on the table which puts him right up there in terms of an A grade midfielder salary.

How is matching that offering “unders” ?!. Suspect we have other midfielders in mind for that $800k.

He’s crazy not to take it.

It’s a tough argument to make when you’ve been buying up all the other $1m houses for $2m.

At St Kilda that’s average 3rd tall defender money.

Elite mids go for $1m+

If you can find an A grade mid for 800k send him to the Blues.

I imagine we’d cough up an extra $200k to have a crack at an elite midfielder.

Time will tell I suppose it’s not like they desperately need to keep him

Just because they dont desperately need him doesnt mean they will trade him. St kilda can't offer anything significant enough to make it worth their while.

I was told months ago by someone that went to school with him, that runs in some of the same friends groups, that he’s definitely a guy that’s interested in the dollars.

Also said his nickname amongst them was something along the lines of “Boofhead” or similarly insulting. So anyone who knows if that’s true can link the other statement as being true.

Windhager is being offered 800kpa?

That’s more than Dunkley is on!

You must admit, it was a good news story tho

Is easily in the best 23 so would definitely prefer to keep him but unlike NAS, it would not be catastrophic if he left. One thing St.Kilda has an abundance of is B grade mids and flankers. Right now he is in that category. We need A graders (or potential A graders) and KPP’s/talls. Windy is a solid citizen. He’s fit, runs hard and competes well. But he turns it over, can be a bit shaky under pressure and we have plenty like him. Hall has already gone past him. Boxshall, Garcia and Travaglia probably will in a season or two.

Pretty sure you will get pick 8 for Petracca which you can use in the draft.

Windy for your pick 23 - not a F1.

Would you also consider trading out one of Petty or JVR?

We have our first round pick this year and plus a full hand of picks next year plus if Marshall or windhager go we will receive decent compensation for them , we have more than enough assets to make a trade happen if he requests one

5 years @ $800k pa with North according to some of their posters.

Amazing $4 million opportunity for him, can’t see how he knocks it back to be honest.

Absolutely. I assume Saints wouldn’t be offering more than around 6/650k
