he's better than tdk who is getting 1 million more per season. that can't be justified. That's why Windhager would be peeved.
He's also getting less than Max King who can't get on the park. Footballers know that key position players get paid more, whether that is fair or not.

Saints got close to the ultimate with a top heavy salary cap under Lyon in his first stint. Be interesting to see if the same model works again this time.

That must have been a while ago though?

Herald Sun -

St Kilda will attempt to put a revised offer to midfielder Marcus Windhager to help keep the hard nut from joining Melbourne or North Melbourne.

The Saints are set to offer the 22-year-old an improved deal in a bid to secure his signature for next season amid a bumper exchange period for the club.

That mail from Finey (a Saints guy) suggesting he was off to Melbourne always seemed suss, especially since it included the “Saints will need to move heaven and earth to keep him” part.

To me it was his manager telling us (or putting more pressure on us) through Finey, to up our offer.

Which it seems we are now doing.

If he really was committed to Melbourne it would presumably have been officially announced today.

So I’d suggest there’s still a lot to play out here.

On the fence whether Saints should keep or flick Windhager. On the one hand, apparently a very solid citizen, trainer and a decent to good AFL player.

On the other hand, probably not far below his ultimate ceiling as a player, he's been a key part of the midfield that has underwhelmed the last couple of years, he's very vanilla and doesn't hurt with ball in hand.

Saints contract offers to him appear to mirror the above, happy to keep him, but on certain terms, not devo if they lose him.
While I’ve made it clear that I don’t think he’s worth us paying him say $850K (which would make him worth a mil on the open market), I think you’re underestimating him there, and the main reason for that is because of the fact he’s still young, and has had a LOT of injury setbacks throughout his career so far, with this year being the first injury-free season he’s had, and his continued improvement throughout said first injury-free season.

I also don’t think he’s done anything close to a full preseason in the last 3 years, so with all that being the case, I find it very hard to believe that he’s close to his ceiling.

His kicking will never be elite, but if he can get a full preseason or two under his belt in the next two years, I think he can become a very prolific ball-winner, with an excellent defensive mindset, elite power-running and two-way running, and with serious positional versatility.

And he’s presumably already in the top handful of “run-with players” in the comp, who can go with serious guns of the opposition while still finding plenty of the ball himself.

Heart and soul player. Bleeds for the club etc etc etc... but happy to walk for more money. A solid blue collar workhorse at the moment.

What team has won it all with a top heavy salary cap? I cannot really think of anyone.

They have a team full of young talent on every line and plenty of depth in Flanders position which is why he haas been getting played out of his preferred position .

Hes being played out of position because he had no pre season due to a back injury and can't run out games in the midfield. They rate him.

Hard to be factual, but Melbourne would be likely.

Didn't the Dees have 3 of the top 10 worst rated kicks in their midfield this season? And their solution is to go out and target another bloke who isn't great by foot?

I don't disagree we have some shocking kicks but that metric had Zac Merrett as a crap kick so it can't be perfect, and I'd imagine we are seeing at least one of them leave this summer.
