Agree about Marieke. But Jason Steiger has always reminded me of David Stratton.I honestly cannot believe they script and rehearse this shit though. I won't lie, when I saw them sitting down in a writing room planning reviews, it took some of the life from it. My favourite thing about discussion is the way it trails. It seems so false to have scripted replies. It was a real dampener on it. I thought they'd discuss the movie and then say their thoughts, but when they shot it, they'd keep succinct but worthwhile, but the fact it's basically just a script? Pretty lame. I always love sitting in a tute and hearing opinions that end up provoking more thought. Having that robbed makes me wonder why you'd bother discussing anything?
The Book Club can be naff I reckon. I like the way Marieke keeps them honest and has no qualms in shooting down bullshit and things she doesn't believe in, but my lord, those top 10s they have are just ******* depressing. People read such gushing trash.
Of course it can stay with you and influence you massively, and I'd put literature on the same pane as film and music above the two, but I have never felt completely removed from life from anything but a movie. If you watch an incredible film it can provoke so many different emotions. It's so wide that, if one thing doesn't pique you, there are other things that can. And when a multitude of things come together and mean something to you, then I can honestly feel detached.
Sometimes when you go on a bender or have a really good night out, you can spend the next day with no serotonin. It's all pretty grey and you end up transfixed, like you just replay certain things and start to think about it. It's a bizarre feeling, it's certainly not fun, but it's something I've only ever gotten from good movies.
