I honestly cannot believe they script and rehearse this shit though. I won't lie, when I saw them sitting down in a writing room planning reviews, it took some of the life from it. My favourite thing about discussion is the way it trails. It seems so false to have scripted replies. It was a real dampener on it. I thought they'd discuss the movie and then say their thoughts, but when they shot it, they'd keep succinct but worthwhile, but the fact it's basically just a script? Pretty lame. I always love sitting in a tute and hearing opinions that end up provoking more thought. Having that robbed makes me wonder why you'd bother discussing anything?

The Book Club can be naff I reckon. I like the way Marieke keeps them honest and has no qualms in shooting down bullshit and things she doesn't believe in, but my lord, those top 10s they have are just ******* depressing. People read such gushing trash.

Of course it can stay with you and influence you massively, and I'd put literature on the same pane as film and music above the two, but I have never felt completely removed from life from anything but a movie. If you watch an incredible film it can provoke so many different emotions. It's so wide that, if one thing doesn't pique you, there are other things that can. And when a multitude of things come together and mean something to you, then I can honestly feel detached.

Sometimes when you go on a bender or have a really good night out, you can spend the next day with no serotonin. It's all pretty grey and you end up transfixed, like you just replay certain things and start to think about it. It's a bizarre feeling, it's certainly not fun, but it's something I've only ever gotten from good movies.
Agree about Marieke. But Jason Steiger has always reminded me of David Stratton.

Where/how did you find out it was scripted?

I think they had a one-off show, or maybe it was on 7.30 and I somehow managed to watch it despite Leigh Sales, and they did a behind the scenes ep. They spoke about the final show and the way it was being constructed.

Ah yep.

I guess you're right that it takes away a lot from the show knowing it's scripted. Loses almost all of the allure that part of the show would have had.

It's pretty disappointing think about it.

Fair dinkum thought this thread had ren bumped to announce David Stratton had passed or something! Thank Christ not!

Also, Leigh Sales is the (perhaps left-leaning) thinking man's crumpet, Silent!
She's ****ing unhinged, short-tempered, typical ABC bottle-a-night-woman crazy and she's ****ing ugly.

Leigh Sales featured on that Home Delivery show with Julia Zemiro where they talk about where they grew up and went to school etc.

She seemed like one of those nerdy girls in school that would always study hard and be a teacher's pet rather than playing up with the cool kids.

Julia Zemiro seems like a pretty cool chick though, not super hot but still kind of cute and the sort of chick that would be good fun to hang out with.

I don't have a problem with scripting if the scripts reflect and repeat the initial conversations

Leigh Sales represents everything bad (re: everything is bad) about the ABC.

Julia Zemiro would have smoked weed at age 16 with uni boys.
