i disagree, he could be the best small forward in the league.. takes a great mark, great crumbing forward who is willing to put the defensive pressure on. i hope he stays at essendon and plays in the forward pocket, he would be very good imo.. capable of 40+ goal forward

I think you might be a bit hard pressed to convince us of that - in case you've forgotten we have the Wizard up forward. I very much doubt that Johnson is anywhere near Farmer's league as far as small forwards go.

I've gotta agree with Dockerman - no more oldies, unless of course we see Bell, McManus and Hase leaving, in which case Johnson may be ok if the price is right. I'd be more than happy if we simply cut what we need to and use our draft picks this year.

He goes pretty good as a forward pocket. Would probably make the 22 regularly for the next year or two but I don't think it is worth it.

I think the team as a whole would be better off in the long term showing faith in our young players. I think the situation is similar to the bulldogs getting Akermanis. Sure he adds something to the team immediately but the opportunity cost in terms of developing your own young players and culture is too much.

I also don't buy into the Solomon 5th in the best and fairest thing - thats like saying Byron Pickett was a good thing for Melbourne. Solomon has taken the place of young players like Marcus Drum and denied them time to develop at the highest level. And thats what Mark Johnson would do too.

I dont think you watched any freo games this year. If you had you would have noticed perhaps the most consistent player that fremantle had. That player was Solomon, every game busted his gut, the last derby epitomized his season.

Players like Drum will not be at that level for another 3 years if at all, and we are NOT a rebuilding club, we are trying to win a premiership.

Solomon is a much better player than Pickett.

How about we adopt something our enemy up the road has in their recruiting. They have a policy of not recruiting anyone over 25-26, they rarely are involved in trades and if they do they trade for picks not unwanted players from opposition clubs.

We shouldnt trade anyone in our current best 22... trade guys who are outside the 22 for picks in the draft to get some younger guys into the mix. Guys like Webster, Murphy, Campbell, Duffield, Browne, walker are guys who might (not will) find a club to give them a go and us a draft pick in the 40's or 50's.

Picks in that range from previous drafts have landed players such as:
Andrew Swallow
Matthew Stokes
Our very own Brock O'Brien
Will Schofield
Mitch Morton
Chris Knights
Matthew Egan
Justin Sherman
Amon Buchanan
Sam Fisher
Mark LeCras
Ben Hudson
Michael Rischitelli

Not saying we will find one of these players with a pick in this range but what do we have to lose when those players outside our best 22 arent going to get a gig anyway.

Surely we are not serious about getting Mark Johnson... he is 28, which in football terms, is an old man.

What will getting another old player do to the like of Drum, O'Brien, Dunn and co... have we learnt nothing from what has happened to Murph?!?!?!?

We need to use the talent we've all ready got and stop wasting out time with old player... youth, pace, youth and pace!!!!

No No No No No No No to Mark Johnson, no disrespect to him personally but no it would damage the development of our list.

I'd say they are looking at contingency plans. We traded to win a flag 12 months ago. If Hasleby and Bell aren't at the club in 2008 Schwab is going to look like a knob for trying to buy a flag, so they will consider bringing in Johnson in the hope of filling Bell's role.

Please don't be true. We'll probably pay way over the odds for him as well

:(

The gap in talent and what they offer the team is enormous.... :thumbsd:

I'm trying to think of a word thats no-er than no.
this sums it up as well as could be said,i had a bit of a giggle here myself ,
reminded me of a particularly bad fishing season when we constantly had to think of new ways to say "f?*& all" every time the net came up

Harvey said that they'll speak to Johnson and his manager then make a decision if he's not offered a contract.

If Bell retires I wouldn't have a problem with us picking him up in the PSD on a one year deal.

As long as:

(i) we don't get into a bidding war with some other club who also decide he's worth a punt and pay over the odds during trade week or in $$$,

(ii) We don't pay anymore than our pick 56 if for whatever reason a deal is done during trade week rather than wait for the PSD,

(iii) We don't give him more than one year, and

(iv) there is no guarantee - or expectation - that he is automatically best 22 (on his part or the club's).

i) I'm sure he won't be offered too much money, if we don't have any cash for Hase we better not pay Johnson anywhere near what he'd currently be on. If he comes across it would be to play footy, not earn money.

ii) Can't see a club actually wanting pick 56, but I'd be happy to part with it.

iii) Yep.

iv) Surely Harvey won't put us through another Slowfield scenario, it was bullshit that Schofield was selected at times when his form was crapola to try to justify picking him up.

I'd consider not renewing my membership if they signed him. After seeing what Port and Collingwood have done with young players and seeing our ageing list go backwards this year relative to them it would be the complete 180 degree reverse of how I would like the club to go next year under Harvey.

hmmm, it doesnt matter what we do, i would never consider not renewing the membership. that would be a weak act on your part if you did.

we dont need johnson, keep pick 56 because we may find a rough diamond. only take him if he is available in the PSD, and dont offer him too much money. only play him if he deserves a game, id hate to see him take fosters position because he has a bigger name

Maybe you see it that way. Tell me what other avenue does one have to protest against what I see as being insane behaviour by the club?

What would you if they traded Pavlich to Essendon for Johnson? Would that be crazy enough for you to protest? I see even the idea that we will continue to pick up cast offs and hacks from other clubs as unacceptable.

you vote against the board, join the mob, write letters, but dont ever give up on them because that is a dog act.

Before I get too excited I should remember this is only a rumour and I need to have my coffee before I write anything else :)

I would never give up supporting Freo, but as someone else has already said, what is noer than no? I want to see Brock O, Foster, Ibbo, Dunn and the like given a crack, not some other clubs rejects.

i agree, we shouldnt be doing it, just cant see the club doing something like that, justifying giving up your membership.

anyway there is no way harvey will let that happen, so im sure we're talking about issues that wont eventuate :o
