Mark Thompson's replacement? Sam Newman?

Although we still have a long way to go this season, and I'm still hoping for that elusive flag, at this stage, it's not looking too good. Assuming the worst, Thompson is gooone. A lot of people are calling for his blood, but not many have suggested alternatives.

Gary Lyon was thrown up a bit last year, but has pretty much stated that he is not interested in going anywhere. Would he be all that good anyway? Our players are soft enough, and I don't think being led by a guy who cries on the stretcher would help.

Darren Creswell was also mentioned as a replacement. Following his altercation with a female though, he was not the flavour of the month, but would obviously still be in a list of 'possibles' for the Cats. Seeing his work at Tasmania, however, I don't know how good he would be for the Cats. The Devils are looking extremely ordinary and have only won one game all year.

Grant Thomas has also been thrown up in a few threads as a maybe. Thomas did nothing for the Saints though, and from all reports was as dodgy and crooked as he looked. Not the kind of guy we need at the Cats.

He played 300+ games for our club, so obviously he knows the game. Thompson was criticised for being too friendly and not giving it to players when they deserved it. If anyone would do this it would be Newman. Thompson has been criticised for having no skills in dealing with the media. Sam Newman is the football media. Newman would be the ultimate coach of the Geelong Football Club. Thoughts?

not a bad suggestion considering he did play 300+ games for the club as you said... but being able to handle the media and give some blokes a spray doesnt mean he's going to be the ultimate coach for GFC. He may be better at these factors in comparison to thompson, but I don't believe Sam Newman is capable of coaching an AFL football team, purely based on his carefree, somewhat immature personality.

Because he has spent the past 5 or 6 years rubbishing the Geelong Football Club, and claims to know every little thing that is wrong with the club. If he had any backbone he would get up and do something about it. Newman as coach could be the xfactor that we need. That said though, he probably has no backbone.

He hasn't coached before and I don't know if he has much self-discipline. Plus, I seriously doubt he would want the pressure and accountability of coaching. His TV stuff is pretty cruisy, would would he go from cruisy highly paid media guy to always busy football coach?

That doesn't mean he actually _knows_ what he is talking about. Rubbishing another coaches decision does not make one a good coach. We all look at some of Bomber's decisions and think WTF? That doesn't mean any of us would be any good at coaching. He hasn't had any coaching experience and wouldn't do anything positive for the club IMO.

Actually, our forwards do alright when it's a 1v1 contest, and going on the fact that we have scored more points than any other club this year, I don't really see the forward line as our problem. We do, however, struggle when they bomb it long into a flood. And, if you'd read my post properly, you'd see that I was just throwing ideas up in the air - no need to rubbish me... although I do sometimes question my sanity.

I remember that article. I reckon we should throw down the gauntlet to Sammy though. Perhaps not as the senior coach, but he should be given the opportunity (again, and perhaps for the final time) to move into an assistant coaching role. If Eddie can be President of Collingwood and the headliner on the Footy Show, then Sam would have no excuses. If he turns down the opportunity, then he should be forced to stfu about the GFC.
