I think at age 36-37, blokes should be given less time to regain their form.

His figures over the last 12 months are impressive, but the last 3 months are the most relevant. Even his score of 55no chasing that small total looked really ordinary, a lucky man out of form.

It took Mark Taylor almost 2 years to regain his form... a risk NOT **worth taking with a guy approaching 37 years of age, with a World Cup around the corner.

I'd rather be searching for replacements now, than realising three months before the World Cup that the bloke is finished!

should be given every chance because his a matchwinner at his best and could be the X factor at the world cup.

He's the sought of player where i think he's just as strong in tests and one dayers (unlike his brother who was alwayz stronger in tests) and could possibly give up both at the same time.

Bring Hayden in for Mark Waugh and bring Lehmann in for Steve Waugh (who should still be there but we can't change that now).

Open with Martyn and Hayden, then have Ponting at three, Bevan at four, Lehmann at five, Watson at six, Gilchrist at seven, with the four bowlers afterwards. Or maybe swap Watson and Gilchrist

I think Mark Waugh should be given the opportunity to play in the one-dayers against South Africa and if he fails, then fair enough but his record is pretty good and one bad series shouldn't be the end of him.

I've got doubts about Hayden as a OD player, his scoring strengths were too easily stopped in the games he played and the frustration showed.
If the selectors are worried about Gilchrist's workload, (and there's a question mark over his knees' holding up to the strain of keeping), why not bring Ryan Campbell back in to keep. I reckon he did OK in the game he had, and should get another chance. Takes pressure off Gilly, he can still open but doesn't have the strain put on his body, plus Campbell's a decent bat.

Im pretty much still of the same opinion, hes 36 turning 37 and i really dont hes the kind of player the Australian team is going to build a future team around

Not forgetting that theres heaps of good quality young players waiting for their chance

if mark was too be dropped, surely jimmy maher is next in line. He's done everything right for the last couple of years and im sure his one of the keenest out there seeing he'll want to make amends for his poor debut 3 or 4 years back.

It's just shows how fickle some Aussie supporters are to want M. Waugh dropped. He has a fantastic record, especially over the last 2-3 years - has a few bad innings in the recent series against two of the best teams in ODI cricket and people want him dropped. Shameful, there's no loyalty anymore.

I agree with you Hippie, I have serious doubts about Hayden as a ODI player. He gets tied down very easily and seems to need the more open field placings of test cricket to score freely. He will have to change his game to be a sucess in ODIs.

For all of those who want to see Martyn take M.Waughs spot as Australian ODI opener, have a look at the scores for both players. Excluding the 100 Martyn scored he had a fairly ordinary series - in fact the 100 is really the only thing separating him from Waugh. If you are going to judge on the century, then why do you not take into consideration that over the past 12 months Waugh has scored 4 100s?

Martyns last 8 innings -
24, 31, 24, 104*, 6*, 2, 6 , 29

M. Waugh's last 8 innings -
36, 1, 0, 15, 55*, 0, 21, 34

Their career averages are almost identical.

Surely Waugh, after his long history of fine performances in the Aussie team, should be given a chance to get back into form.

But why get rid of a proven performer, just because he has had three or four bad innings after a stellar year - and replace him with a young kid who is going to be under immense pressure to replace a player of that calibre? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

How many young kids do we have that are ready to perform at international level? Not many. Maher is one of the youngest who looks ready, he is 27. Hussey is 27 this year. The rest are 30+.
