Not only wash your mouth out! But read Aussie Rules Footy for dummies!
Two different players with different strengths, here we go!
Tooves can play tall or short very few defenders in the league can play that as well as Tooves. Both are agile but for me Tooves looks the better, both are quick, but Marley is very strong in the core and has better acceleration in the first 5 metres. Marley would be a better match up for a Rioli but would be a liability against Darling. Tooves just eats Darling for breakfast but has his problems against Rioli. Had this feeling Williams would take the next step this year, but most of all I am wrapped they both play for the Pies!
Different roles and abilities yes but Marley has gone past him.
Doesn't mean there's no room for both.

Jeez how quickly some forget.

Marley has not gone past Toovey. Please.

Toovey was our best small defender, probably our most important player behind Cloke. Week in week out got the best small forward and would pretty much win his matchup each week.

I think Marley, long term, will be more similar to Shaw than he will be to Toovey. He strikes me as a natural footballer, where Toovey was a project player who came (very) good. He isn't better than Toovey one on one though, not yet anyway.

You might be romantacizing Tooves abilities just a little bit there.

Toovey is a better player than Marley. Quicker, more versatile, better 1v1.

But Williams still scope for more development. Since his kicking and especially decision making has improved, his natural poise, composure and ability to win the contested ball are becoming more apparent. So much so that I think Bucks can mould him into a well rounded shutdown/running defender ala Shaw, or even utilise him in the midfield as a rotation or as a run with player.

I don't think Williams will stay a pure lockdown defender forever.

As dissapointed as i was after todays game against GC, Marley is simply our answer to small forwards.

He is easily best 22 now. Love the way he goes hard at the contest all the time. He is definitly not one ever showing lack of discipline or will to play. Others should take a leaf out of his book

Butchers the Ball to Much by Foot

Agree to an extent, but he does have a habit of trying to bite off more than he can handle which forces himself under unnecessary pressure and affects his disposal.

He's not a great kick by any means, but with experience he'll learn when to attempt to break the lines and when to play within his limitations better.

So a Bit Like Toovey. Who started as a Shocking Kick and Now he is a Descent Kick

Marley is not a bad kick, that myth arose during the couple of NAB cup game he played in the pre season while his off season discretions were clear playing on his mind.

He is by no means a great kick but he is no worse then average, his kicking hasn't really 'improved' as he was kicking to roughly this standard in the games he played last season. With Marley we have to accept that he is what he is, an average kick, there are plenty worse kicks around the league and within our team. And Marley more then makes up for this with his other attributes.

Toovey isn't a decent kick. Marley is a better kick than Toovey.
Quite often supporters seem to associate a player's kicking ability with one or two errant but memorable kicks early in their career. Reid is the best example. For years, supporters on BF have believed him to be a poor kick for goal, based on his stuttering run up in one AFL game. Then when he did play up forward this year, suddenly he actually looks a bit of sharp shooter. Mind you, the assessment of Toovey's kicking is probably based on a lot more than one kick or one game. Williams is a least a better kick than I remembered him being before his injury.

Butchers the Ball to Much by Foot

One bad game disposal wise, and a few bad kicks, doesn't equate to him being a player that "Butchers the Ball to Much by Foot"

I saw him fluff one kick.... One.
Already better disposal that our last brownlow medallist.
His disposal is actually very good.
Where he has a target he usually is a good pass, and a nice long kick.
But coming off the back line with speed as he often does, he finds no good options because we don't have a proper spread or forward line structure so he is often forced to kick to a contest, and therefore a 50/50.
He has a bit of Harry O in him, if he maybe learnt a bit more vision and composure, he could take that bit more time to spot up the smartest play, but other than that the kids a gun and one of the biggest positives to come of this year.

Every time he goes near the pill you know he's going to win the contest..... Very similar to Jimmy C in that regard.

He's a battering ram and he's got sticky fingers, very good at taking possession from the ground, shrugging tackles, and clearing the ball out of the back line.
We've missed someone like this since Leon Davis left.

Right now i would have Toovey ahead of Marley by a significant margin. Toovey is a versatile, consistent and dependable player, very strong on the ground and in the air.
Marley is our most improved by a significant margin, Seedsman included, he has been fantastic. Wins one on ones, never beaten and as brave as we have. Huge improver over 2013 and he showed a fair bit last year.
I love to see improvment in young players; each year you need 4 to 6 players to take the proverbial 'step'.
His is the first name on this list ( have we got 5 this year)?

Tough as nails, adds a new string to our bow really. We haven't had a hard one on one small defender in quite some time. Shows glimpses that he will become a real general in our back half.

Needs some Rising Star love IMO!

He's come on in leaps and bounds this year and its almost entirely because of his vastly improved disposal efficiency. Since he broke into the line up he's demonstrated a strong ability one on one defensively, but was horrid with ball in hand until the past 8 weeks.

I was on the verge of writing him off it was so poor, but full credit to him he has turned it around magnificently :thumbsu:

Wearing the wrong colour jumper for that.

Thought he was establishing himself last season before he did the shoulder, taken his opportunity this year with both hands and hard to see anyone forcing him out of the side.
