Obviously the biggest is Anzac Day Collingwood v Essendon

We also have

Dreamtime Richmond v Essendon

MCG season opener Carlton v Richmond

Queens Birthday Melbourne v Collingwood - bit of a flat game these days owing to Melbourne's position but historically a big clash that needs to be preserved

Suggestions for others;

North Melbourne v Carlton on Good Friday. Makes sense given the location of the RCH and would form part of the appeal. Also played @ the Docklands which would give the ground a public holiday game.

Essendon v Carlton are playing Friday night of Queens Birthday w/e on the day to celebrate 140 years since we first played. Do not mind the idea of the game being played on the same w/e on the Friday night annually. This game is the biggest non-Collingwood game in the league.

Return of the Rivalry Round incl Carlton v Coll'wood, Essendon v Hawthorn and all the local derbies. Not sure what you do with the rest of the VIC clubs.

Currently North always host Carlton on a Friday night, Sydney host Collingwood on a Saturday night, Hawthorn play Geelong on Easter Monday and St Kilda play Carlton on a Monday night in May.

This has been one of the biggest marquee games consistently over the past few years (I believe).

I wonder whether its popularity will become a timeless clash no matter where the two teams are on the ladder, or if it's a fad that'll pass as soon as Hawks beat the Cats/ either team drops down the ladder

Richmond can play Gold Coast, feels more legitimate than QClash.
Exactly. Same with Melbourne vs. GWS

How about this for a 'recent rivalry' round?
Sydney vs. West Coast (I know so many Sydney fans seething about 2006)
Port Adelaide vs. Adelaide
Richmond vs. Gold Coast
Melbourne vs. GWS (Scully Cup)
Collingwood vs. Brisbane (Both a historical rivalry with Fitzroy and a modern one with the 2002-03 Grand Finals)
Geelong vs. Hawthorn (the big one right here)
Essendon vs. Carlton
St. Kilda vs. Footscray (great recent rivalry starting 2009-10)
Fremantle vs. North Melbourne (alright not really a rivalry yet but going by last year's results may happen soon)

The state based rivalries all seem artificial (with the exception of Adelaide vs. Port Adelaide which is tribal)

Really though what I'd like to see come back is heritage round.

Christ, I hate having to endure the artificiality of Richmond v Carlton or Richmond v Essendon. God damn, why can't we just have a legitimate rivalry like the showdown. Really grinds my gears, after all we've been playing both of those clubs for 120 years. You'd think a history would have built up between the clubs. But nope. Nada. Zip.

I should've been clearer, I meant non-Victorian ones, like Sydney vs. GWS and Brisbane vs. Gold Coast.

Absolutely I think Richmond vs. Carlton and Richmond vs. Essendon are legitimate rivalries. I just didn't put them in the list because I was going for more recently developed rivalries.

The ANZAC Day love should be shared around the nation. I'd like to see Adelaide v West Coast on ANZAC Day as well, alternating yearly between Adelaide and Perth. Crows v Eagles at Adelaide Oval on ANZAC Day - that would be epic. Set up a Sydney v Brisbane game as well and the whole country is feeling the ANZAC love. People would get on board, could be a huge day and still leaves 6 games for the weekend.

I think it might endure you know. Much like the Hawks V Essendon rivalry which was largely born in the 80s, I think that this one has the ability to continue on for some time. Guys like Selwood, Hawkins, Stokes, Varcoe Mackie, Lewis, Roughie, Franklin (if he stays), Birchall etc, guys who played through these games will keep the tradition alive for years to come and as more young guys come through this then it will continue.

At least I hope so. Such good games, though the results suck a fair bit of late (see last 10 games)

thought st kilda playing in wellington added to the day. as an opponent the sydney swans have a big enough profile but its not fair on the old sth melbourne supporters to have to sacrifice a melbourne game.

maybe carlton or richmond could go there next year to promote the game (obviously collingwood & essendon are unavailable).

agree geelong & the hawks are a great modern rival. the proof will be when one or both are down the bottom.

essendon already have big games against the blues, magpies & tigers.

Personally couldn't give a stuff. The only marquee games are in September/October. The rest are just plain old home and away games.

tbh I agree with you to an extent. all the historical big games are because they have september history.

however with so many teams in the comp now just chasing one prize, marquee games at least give something else to win during the season.

Essendon and Hawthorn should be in a game against each other to promote, Stop school bullying
